A Year of Tortured Patience: Holding Out for the Second-Gen iPhone
Posted by Adam Frucci at 5:00 AM on June 7, 2008
When the first iPhone was announced, I thought it looked cool. Very cool. But I just couldn't bring myself to plunk down a whopping US$600 on a phone that lacked some pretty important features: video recording, picture-messaging, tons of storage, and, most importantly, a 3G connection that would make the awesome mobile Safari browser worthwhile. I assumed that if I just held out for the next generation, I'd -- at the very least -- get the higher bandwidth, and probably pay less up front for it. Let me tell you, it's been a hell of a long wait.
As the year has progressed, I've kept having situations where I just wished I had a little device that would allow me to surf the web with ease: trying to settle a debate at a bar with friends, checking reader comments of a post while in a cab, that sort of thing. I used the Helio Ocean for a time, then, when its fatness in my pocket just got on my nerves, I switched to the Helio Fin. It's thin, but its browser leaves a lot to be desired. Most websites came up garbled and difficult to navigate, and the arrow keys are a lousy way to move around. Yes, I know it's not fair to compare a flip phone to a pseudo-smartphone, but having a flip phone and seeing everyone else daintily rubbing their iPhones just made it that much more painful.
Adding to my lack of patience is the fact that I travelled more this year than maybe in any other year in my life combined. I flew to Tokyo, to LA, to Portland, to South Carolina, to Vegas, to Florida, to New Hampshire. And guess what? Living in NYC means that you've got maybe an 85% chance of having your flight delayed when leaving or coming back. All those hours I spent in airports waiting for delayed planes -- if I had an iPhone I would've been able to check Giz easily! I could read Tumblr! I could just surf around on the web and kill time!
Although the impulse to cave grew and grew, it made increasingly less sense to buy one. After all, I was being mature and waiting. I'm not some impulsive person who can't control their own spending! Hell, I'm one of only two Giz editors who uses a PC -- I'm no Apple fanboy! Also, I talked a lot of shit to my co-workers who did buy one, so if I gave in before the next version came out, I'd end up looking like a real asshole.
With every new rumour about the iPhone 3G that came out, it made me want one more, but it also strengthened my resolve to wait. To the folks who already had theirs it was just a countdown to an upgrade, but for me it was when I could get my first taste of iPhone ownership.
Now, finally, God willing, my nightmare is ending and I'll finally get a 3G iPhone. And it will all have been worth it. Because I won't have an old iPhone to try to get rid of and I'll probably spend less than those early adopters had to. Plus, my first experience with the iPhone will be better. While everyone else had to suffer through pokey EDGE connections and annoying missing features, I'll be hopping on board right when the iPhone hits its stride. I'll have not only the internet at the airport, but games and all kinds of other stuff!
See? It was worth waiting. I'm smart! It was worth going through an entire year without the phone I really wanted. I'm the most sensible editor at Gizmodo! Right guys? Right? Please, tell me I'm right.

I wonder what will happen if there's no 3G iPhone announced come next week....
Hmmm.....angry mobs? therapy sessions? suicide? All over the excitement surrounding a phone that hasn't even been announced, only alluded to. Everyone is getting swallowed in the hype.
I won't lie, I've been waiting too, but it's not a huge deal to me since I'm jobless at the moment and can't afford it either way.

Amen, brother! I wanted to wait for a 3G, too. But I thought it would come out much sooner. As a matter of fact, a friend was prepared to chip in to buy me an iPhone at Christmas, but I told him to hold off -- that the new model was coming soon. I was also waiting for my Verizon contract to end in January. When it didn't come in January I knew I'd probably have to wait till June. With each successive month I became more hungry after each rumor. It's been like waiting for a Star Wars movie to come out. I'm about to burst. I don't know what I'm going to do with my time after next week. I guess I'll start pouring over all the apps available for the iPhone. At any rate, I'm anxiously waiting to collect on my last year's Christmas gift!

Wow Free koolaid (apple flavor of course)
While it may not have the "COOL" (hey look at me I dropped a load of $$$ on a "OOH Pretty look at all the shiny buttons" crippled phone) factor ...
$150 or so will get you a Nokia N800 Internet Tablet
I know it's NOT a Phone!
(although it does do VOIP really well)
But it CAN connect to one via BT, it has WiFi 2SD slots.... up to 32GB of removable storage so far. Open Source out of the box so no need to "J-Break" a new device.
IMO a better ROI overall.
Well, I've openned a mess'o worms

I waited too, until my 5th Gen iPod died an earth shattering death in March. I was going to get an iPod Touch to replace it, but AT&T had their first $250 iPhone refurb sale. So, I jumped on that instead. Basically, for the price of an iPod touch I got free cell phone tossed in.
I'll probably upgrade to the 3G iPhone, but not for 3G. Everywhere I go I get free WiFi so 3G isn't all that important.

The biggest question for me is: now that I've waited a year (really 18 months, I've been waiting since the iPhone was announced), do I wait another week to read some reviews or just buy the damn thing and hope it's everything I dreamed it would be?

You could have done what I did. Buy another smart phone with all of the iPhone features and more. Even this next generation of iPhone wont be able to do everything my phone can. I have a AT&T Tilt. Sure its not as "pretty" as the iPhone, but I'm a man and I prefer functionality over looks.
To everyone that trash talks Windows Mobile, yes I agree it sucks in its default state. However you can do so much to make it work the way you want and there are thousands of great apps out there for it. Hell you could even make it look and work exactly like the iPhone if you wanted to.

OK, let me get this straight. You edit for a big site, that does Tech/Gadget news, you NEEDED an iphone for business, and Gizmodo couldn't get you one? Or at least helped you pay for one? I mean these have went down to reasonable prices. You did wait the whole year, but damn if you needed one, you should have gotten one, used it and then upgraded. Shit, if I needed one, then I would have gotten one, or get a blackberry or something. Not trying to bash the poster, but damn this post was for you make yourself feel better. Yes the FIRST adopters that paid $600, got screwed (got a buddy at work that paid it and had to have his replaced do to the heat problem) but the rest that got the phones as they went down etc, I think did the right thing. Waiting for a whole year is fine, but in the end you just tortured yourself and you could have gotten a fairly priced iphone, been more productive, and then got a new 3g. Just my opinion.

I'm really hoping that that rumored $200 price is true -- because if it is, the prices on the 1st gen iPhones will plummet on eBay, and I might just get one just to jailbreak it and unlock it.
Because, really, it's a swank piece of tech. It's the price tag, and having to use it through AT&T, that made it unappealing to me.

no way dude... even without those "pretty important features" the iPhone has well out-paced any phone I've used previously. Don't get me wrong I'm psyched to see it upgraded with the correct hardware pieces I wished it had, but I didn't really miss them. Everywhere we needed something from the web or whatever, everyone turned to me to look it up for them because it was easier to ask someone else to use their iPhone than it was to look it up on theirs.
Don't forget though the only difference between the two will most likely be a 2-way camera, GPS and 3G... almost every other new piece will be software and thus available on iPhone 1.

I've been waiting since the original announcement for the exact same reasons. Internet was too slow (although light-years better than my POS Treo). Not enough storage (although 32GB won't really be enough either). No MMS (although there's the e-mail workaround).
Now, finally, the day has come. I'm not alone - all of my family and friends have been waiting for 3G (on my advice). Considering this is 100 posts down on a site for gadget lovers, WE'RE not alone. I don't think I've ever seen a product (esp. a follow-up product) with this much pent-up demand.
Huge sales. AAPL stock up. I finally get an iPhone and can stop caressing my friends'. It's win-win.

It has 3G, great data programs such as Yahoo! Mobile and Windows Live, etc. In Google Maps for Mobile, you can even do positioning (sort of like not quite). Someone said $200 pricing. That would mean, and I'm just spit-ballin' here, the newer, faster, better, stronger, more bang for your buck, iPhone 2.0 would be less than...just about everything Apple makes, made, and ever will make. Demand would skyrocket; silicone would cease to exist, along with aluminum, plastic, and glass; coupled with the ever expanding world-wide carrier list, data networks would crumble, cause brown outs, blue outs AND black outs...simultaneously...;and tear a hole in space through which all the iPhones and iPhone 2s would be sucked into some alternative dimension. We'd be standing there, holes in our pockets, in a world with iPhone and we'll sit back and think..."Man, life is so much better when you're not constantly connected. I need to email that to someone, right...now......AWW CRAP!!!"

Honestly, I just want the AT&T exclusivity to go away, and let me keep my T-mo. That said, I probably will switch when AT&T finally gets around to boosting the signal in my office park.

So I guess once you get this new iphone your life will be pretty much complete? As in, nothing ever better will be released, nor will you die, you will have bought "heaven", in which your life revolves around a litt piece of technology...

I think you're smart for waiting, even though you're a gadget guru and that's something akin to having consumer OCD. The will power you must possess astounds me. Have you ever extinguished a candle with will power alone? You should try it, but I digress.
The big holdup for me is still the lack of being able to use the iPhone as a 3g modem for my computer. Paying $500 for internet service that I can only use for my phone is completely frivolous for me. If I could pair it with my laptop and use it on the road, I'd be hard pressed not to get in line for it right this second.
MicroSDHC would also be nice, but not essential.

It drives me nuts when people say the phone lacked important features like picture messaging, video recording and storage. None of that is important. Its a phone you retards. And storage? 4-8gb isn't enough storage for a phone? Could you be any more gluttonous

As a gadget fan, I can appreciate how hard it is to hold off on buying the shiny new toy. Especially when your friends flaunt theirs in front of you.
But in the end, you gotta remember that it is still just a phone. Even after you upgrade... you are still just buying a phone. Your life is not going to change. You won't start getting phone calls from Hollywood starlets asking you out to the latest coke-fueled rave parties at low profile clubs. The news articles on CNN.com are still going to be just as depressing. Your Mom will still call way too early on a Sunday morning to bore you with stories of what precious thing her cat just did.
Sure... you'll have the quiet satisfaction of having a shiny new toy. But once that initial excitement of the nifty UI wears off, it will just be another phone with crappy battery life like so many other past cell phones that litter your desk drawer.

I've had an iPhone for 4 months and while EDGE is a little slow, it was totally usable. As a matter of fact, I don't even see myself upgrading to 3G. Since the iPhone 2 software is going to be available for everyone, I just don't see any reason to get a new iPhone.

I'm there with you.
I'll be going from an original release RAZR (2004) to the iphone2 if the rumors of the AT&T contract subsidy are true.
Which is good because the battery on my phone only lasts for about 5 mins of talk time now...
It's made a nice long run for a phone though, so I'm excited.

You waiters were just a bunch of pussies
Couldn't step up and piss like a horse - and now you're trying to justify it with the 20/20 BS
It's been completely worth the $$$ since iDay to have the best phone on the market, and watch everybody else try to feebly justify why they just couldn't stump up the dosh.
I'll be happily plonking down more readies for a 3G version - and I'm more than happy to do so.
May the pathetic whining and iPhone bashing commence.....

I am by no means an Apple fanboy - in fact, in many ways I'm anti-Apple - but the iPhone is the best phone ever (IMO, of course). Even with its limitations, the smoothness of everything that it does is amazing. I just got my 16GB iPhone a couple of months ago and now I'm selling it on eBay, for more than I bought it for I might add, so I can get the new one ASAP. :) It sounds like holding out for the 3G iPhone wasn't a bad choice for you because you have a lot of patience and your previous concerns about its limitations will (hopefully) be reconciled.

I held out for a long time, but finally caved in March. Sure, there were rumors of a 3G iPhone back then, too, but my previous phone wasn't cutting it. I plunked down $400 for one in March, and sold it on Wednesday night for $350 cash. Apparently, according to a recent Giz feature, I could've gotten more for it. Well, now the 2nd Gen iPhone is coming out (3G), and I'm ready to upgrade, having taken a measly $50 depreciation hit on the phone. Those 3 months of not having to wait were worth the $50 to me.
And now I have a nice wad of cash to snag a 3G version once it's released. I just hope it's soon, because I'm starting to get the shakes without my iPhone...

I waited too. No more.
Except for tethering, which I currently pay an extra $15 a month for whether I use it or not, I won't miss anything about my Treo except what it will still be able to do--play late-'90s vintage Palm OS games.

Your problem seems to be self-inflicted negativity. You've spent a year looking at all of the things the iPhone doesn't have rather than enjoying all of the really cool things it does have. You need to think more positively. But hey. It's you're loss. While you've been acting all "mature", I've been surfing the web while waiting on my wife to try on 30 different dresses at the store and while it's slow, it's still wonderful...

When I got out of my Sprint Contract in November I was tempted to get the Iphone, but I made the switch to the Verizon Voyager for service and the Live TV/Real GPS and such, now I'm willing to make the switch if the Next Iphone has at least GPS added and 3G(I tested the browser without Wifi and it's just useless) But after playing with my Ipod Touch and browsing the net, The Voyager's browser works but doesn't even compare to the Iphone. I'll be glad to finally make the switch to the Iphone, I actually have gotten bored of typing with keyboard. I'm surprised though nobody has made a fold out keyboard for the Iphone, Like they used to for Palm Pilots back in the day.

Cant wait. Ive held out for the last year too. This device is far more than a phone- its is a handheld computer running MacOSX with much as yet unrealized potential.
Any smart phone users that dismiss this device are too entrenched with the familiar, too comfortable with the limits of their hardware amd too biased against Apple to accept that this is a computer running a desktop class OS that fits in your pocket.
No tirades, no petty name calling, no PCvMac BS. Plain truth spoken plainly.

With all those ATT refurb deals for the past months @ $249, Cmon!( which you could fetch more when sold). The Jailbroken iPhone is the perfect buddy. In the plane, in the car, where ever you need to wait. I took a trip to asia with it and was so glad I have it. I even ran a video presentation on it connected to a large tv during our high school reunion.
and you're right, the wait to upgrade is excitingly painful.

You made a big mistake NOT buying one. I bought one when the price point dropped, then sold it a week ago for $100 more than I paid for it. Now I have extra spending money AND cash to buy the new 3G iPhone. Waiting a year actually COST you $100 and the pain of not owning the slickest device out there.

There is a big different from Blazing a Trail & following one, irrespective to whom may have put the technology (iphone) on the map, and it doesn't make you a fanboy becuz you know how to recognize talent, when playing it safe you've missed out on what real fun is all about, which is probably why they never really get the girl/guy, the promotion, the money etc, etc, etc,

If my account gets approved for this comment, and one of you actually reads it, i was wondering if giz would give us a 'noob's guide to haggling for a 3G iPhone' and see if you actually manage to get any money off one. Then not only you win, what with your cheaper 3G iphone, but all of us see that it can be done, and us students can save a bit of cash for other things lol.
I hope u see the sense in this, and the increased numbers of people it will bring to your blog, see, every1 wins, and if u don't succeed u still win for getting more popular.

@Snoshrk: You really didn't open any can of worms. You thought you did with your Nokia comment, but really, the only person who has the 'internet tablet' is you. It's a piece-o-poo according to many reviews, and the one I saw looked like cheap plastic junk.
