Yamaha's YST001 Home Theatre Speakers Are Home Lighting Units Too
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 5:44 PM on June 12, 2008
Yamaha has teamed up with lighting experts Koizumi to create these home theatre speakers with built-in lighting. Each unit has three 25W halogen lamps that are remote control-dimmable down to 20% brightness, designed to reduce the contrast between your TV picture and the wall behind to "ease the burden on your eyes." So, a kind of one-colour, non-reactive ambilight then, but the effect they produce is pretty subtle and saves you from installing moodlighting.
The 47-inch high units have a 70Hz - 35kHz response, and will cost around US$1,250, but there's no info on availability. [Yamaha and Akihabaranews]

For $1250 they should have fitted in LED lighting, not wall burning Halogen.

@daftrok: well the wall burning makes up for the fact that it is not color adapting to whats on the screen. So they took care of it by changing the color of your wall. To black, much like someones heart....

@king-ILL: $1250 for a pair of towers is actually low-midrange in terms of price. I didn't see any tech specs on their performance so we'll have to play wait and see to find out if they have quality parts and construction. In the meantime, buy these halogen spots from IKEA [www.ikea.com] and mount them behind your speakers with a $10 dimmer. Total cost is $30. I already did this behind my entertainment system and it gets the 'Oohs and Aahs' on the cheap. If there's enough space, these could be mounted behind a flat screen on the TV housing. I bet that would look pretty sweet too.

That's the same sort of fine designer lighting that graces airplane lavatories everywhere.

I did this LONG time ago via lowes... get yourself a coil of sheet metal, some 1x's, create a frame to make it all cool and curvy and tall. wrap the frame with said sheet metal, hot-glue gun the sucker, get rope lights, hot glue gun along the inside edges, and you have 2 8foot tall shiny stainless dimmable wall sconces. Add it to X10 or Smart home modules for better control. It doesn't look ghetto - quite clean and pro.

@N@tedog: I like your Ikea idea so much that I'm headed out to do exactly what you suggested.... TODAY! :)
