What Do You Want to Ask LEGO?
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 7:37 AM on June 17, 2008
As you know, I'm in Billund, Denmark, right now. Tomorrow I'll be talking with the guys who make LEGO, the ultimate geek toy, and I would be able to ask them anything I want. So what would you like to know? What would you like to see? Tell me in the comments or write to my mail directly. [LEGO]

This might sound weird but could you please develop a Top Gear set? Given that the program is the best car show that I have ever seen, can the Stig be there as well?

@Kaiser-Machead's got LindsayJoy's cookies on the SuperDrive: They do have a Lego Tumbler coming out, but it's probably no where near as detailed and multi-featured as you want it. Weirdest thing's it's supposed to be sold with all the other Batman sets, no special movie sets, and I think the Joker minifig with it's not the movie version either!
As for what I'd like made, I know they're finally moving forward on actual car models (Think they said a VW Beetle's coming soon), and I'm glad for that, but how about a DeLorean!? Pretty sure people'd get a kick out of that! Of course the easiest way to sum up what I'm leading to from that is simply stating "Back to the Future" (the ride version of the time machine'd be cute too). I could think of some wild wishes though- the California versions of the Haunted Mansion and Tower of Terror, maybe some other Disney park related stuff (the transports from the Indiana Jones ride'd be cool), Morris Mini perhaps, etc.

I hate to ask a question about an IP, since I understand how many issues are involved, but I feel that I must.
Why aren't there Lego Transformers, like Optimus Prime along with a Truck, etc? My 7 year old son would force me to buy them all (regardless of price), and I get the feeling they'd be wildly popular, especially with the Transformers 2 movie in development. I don't even think they'd need to actually transform .. as long as they were good representations of the characters (but if they did transform it would be very cool).

I agree on the legacy sets. I had the King's Castle and had the pirate ships from the 80's / 90's that had the sails and all.
Maybe this is something they already offer, but can you get the instructions reprinted or online for free for older sets?

The usual "Why did you change the color palette? No, seriously..." question comes to mind. I know it still bugs a lot of AFOLs.
And the previous question about "When can we buy ANY LEGO element on shop.lego.com (and maybe get recommended replacement suggestions if they are not available). If I will pay $300+ for a GREAT LEGO Technic model used on eBay, I certainly would have no problems dropping the same into one of my own creations. And yeah, I would LOVE to build some of the discontinued sets once again, like that great red "Super Car" model.
Just some thoughts.
Oh, yeah, and I STILL love the black and white mosaic kits, even though I know they were not revenue-generators. Perhaps if they would have had that "missing" extra grey, I would have bought more. Now, I wish I had just bought several and stored them.

There's a lot of talent out there in the adult fan of lego community found on sites like brickshelf, mocpages and brother's brick, etc. A couple of examples would be the Arvo brothers and Izzo, etc. A lot of these works are VERY large and would not be economical to replicate and sell but many are within reason (number of pieces are comparable to existing sets that Lego offers). Has Lego considered contacting these people and offering to purchase the design for re-sale or must the designer submit the product through Lego Factory to be considered?
How much is Lego considering the Adult fans vs the children when designing sets? Recent sets like the M Falcon and the new Town sets are certainly geared towards adults. Will Lego continue to reach out to this very strong, financially capable audience with more intricate and larger sets?

Ok Jesus, I got another question for you. I know they usually do big money deals. Indy. Star Wars. Sponge Bob, Batman, Spider-Man....pretty much a guaranteed win. They already did work with Marvel with Spider Man, so they could have done Iron Man, although I think that might have been a lack unique fairy-tale-esque set/vehicle issue (Tony Stars Mansion? Plane with a Stripper Pole? An Audi?) but why oh why did they do Speed Racer? Why? Why? Why??????? Did they get paid to do those sets?

Why do Lego create plastic pieces that clearly aren't lego and can only be used for one purpose? They may as well create one plastic toy to save having to put it together.
Why do Lego create pieces that could have been made out of many Lego pieces. Do they think kids are too lazy nowadays to put it altogether so they give them shortcuts?

Wow. What a bunch of young whippersnappers...How about bringing back the original 70's sets... the ones with the figures that had the pancake hands, or the three piece figures that looked like they walked around with their hands in their pants pockets? How about brinign back the Villa, the rescue helicopter, or the police station?
My grandmother used to work at the Samsonite factory. When we would visit in the summer, she would have a couple of bags full of bricks that they used to sweep off of the floor.
The reason that there were always left over pieces in each set was to enable to build the items that were on the sides of the box.
Seriously, one thing I would like to know: How did they acquire the LEGO rights? I heard that Samsonite did not renew their rights, and I have heard that the rights were purchased. Can they shed any light on the matter?

I wish the sets were more like the older sets, with 2x4 pieces instead of 1x4 pieces for construction of buildings. It seems like current sets require imagination since you're just building a facade of a building, not the actual building anymore. Ask them if they'll go back to not using so many specialized pieces.

Will Lego ever officially release LED illuminated pieces? With SM LED's?

Not a question, but I would love to suggest that they make an original steampunk themed series. I would buy every single set. Steampunk LEGO is my nirvana.

Also note figures have changed from a lego flesh tone to a more realistic flesh tone. This was at the request of Lucas.

@papaguru: Seconded, but since he's in Denmark right now, and I've been nagging for quite some time, I don't foresee much action on this front anytime soon. I think that he just moved to London (thought I read that, anyway) so a move of household might have taken priority. Might be a lost block or two, if Jones is the brick-eating type of dog.

I'd appreciate if you'd ask them why in hell they would fuck up the Summer 2008 Toa like this...

@markgm: +1. The reason I don't buy many LEGOs anymore is cuz they're not what they used to be.
The other main reason being I have discoverd that you can buy other things than LEGO with the few money a geek has^^

Can we get Legos to teach basic circuitry? Certain legos are conductors, some are resistors, some are switches etc. That'd be super awesome, k?

@dangster:
Legal twitch with the license. They're allowed to sell Star Wars construction toys, not Star Wars action figures. Apparently if there's not _some_ construction model included with them, minifigs fall under the action figure category. Hence why the 2006-2007 SW army-builder sets have mostly-lame vehicles stuck in there with a decent spread of minifigs.
@Mr.Wilson:
It's already out (all four 2008 sets have been for a few weeks). The Joker is the stock LEGO Joker, and I'd be shocked if the ice-cream truck is based on anything from The Dark Knight. The motorcycle from this year's lineup is supposed to be based on the Batpod, but it's a bit difficult to see. The only minifig that's been updated is Robin, who lost the goofy pompadour (which will still be see in the LEGO Batman video game) for a black version of the Mutt Williams hair (who would have looked much more appropriate with the pompadour). The three sets that include Batman feature the dark-bley Nolan batsuit, and the only completely new minifig is Harley Quinn. Who fell victim to an odd printing error that makes her look like she's had a mastectomy.
@LindsayJoy's MBP is into S+M:
Awesome? It's ridiculous! I mean, yeah, the Tumbler is supposed to be big, but not 18 studs wide. It won't even fit in a two-lane roadplate. 10-wide would be much more minifig-scaled, though it might require dropping the passenger seat. Ironically, the Penguin set, which I was least interested in from early set photos, turned out to be the best set of this wave, not accounting for minifigs.
@LindsayJoy's MBP is into S+M:
Spiderman was licensed through Sony and was limited to just the movies. Marvel dropped their mass-license deal on Megabloks, and scuttled the Sony deal as a result...somehow. Ironman is right out, and I have no idea why they touched Speed Racer (or Galidor), but the upside is that we got a few new car parts, like the fender and windshield.
@taylors_dad:
Only the old TECHNIC sets and the new Creator sets include spare parts for alternate models, and those same sets provide instructions for the secondary models. Mostly the extra parts are small and easily lost. Extras are included to reduce the likelihood that a consumer will be unable to build the set straight out of the box. I once spent 1/2 hour looking for a 1x1 round plate for my UCS X-Wing, only to later discover that I had been shorted instead of getting the customary extra.
@pobox90210:
So people on LUGNET can run contests requiring the use of at least one single-purpose part.
@LindsayJoy's MBP is into S+M:
The old shoulder-length hair comes in red, dark-red, and earth-orange; the Dumbledore hair comes in dark-red (you should even have one if you own the Arkham Asylum set); or there's my personal favorite, the tousled shoulder-length hair in orange.
@NYRngrs24:
They've got a ferris wheel. Does that count?
@Mr.Wilson:
The VW should be out either this year or next, but it will likely be a S@H exclusive.
@FinalValgas:
They already did. SW Ep3 featured light-up lightsabers...but you couldn't change the battery. Same thing for the 2x4 brick found in some Exo-Force and Designer sets.

Just got back from a vaction in San Diego. Went to Lego Land out there, saw some amazing lego sculptures, especially the minitown area. The Lego Washington DC was great, since I grew up in the area. Uploading to flickr as we speak and might throw up a link later.

I'd like to know how they refer to pieces internally. Among my cousins we'd define the length by "humps", then as "thick" for the tall ones, "thin" for the one layer (was it four thins to make an equivalent to one thick?), and "flats" with a Hump x Hump measurement.
Also, what are the most popular pieces? For us, it was undoubtedly the two-hump thicks. God, that sounds horrible.

I'm curious as to why they discontinue series and sets more rapidly now than they did in the past. It used to be that a series could be counted on for multiple years, now it's barely 12 months and they're "no longer produced". Is this marketing? Logistics? Or are trends really changing that fast in their market these days?

I've been a fan of LEGO ever since I can remember. I really wish they weren't discontinuing their 9V electrified rail train sets. My question is why? I know there is a huge adult LEGO following, especially with LEGO trains. Also I've felt they've sold out recently and some of their sets aren't very complex. For me, the more challenging the set was the more fun I had!

Ask them if they would set up some sort of bulk part sale catalogue at their site, so that serious MOC'ers don't have to buy multiple sets to get more of certain parts.
Also, are they planning to release a fully-supported Lego CAD set of applications that support current Quad Core computers and graphics acceleration? Lastly, they need to incorporate Bionicle parts into Lego CAD?
I would be in geek's heaven if they did these things.

Yeah... I was there on the Tour Jun 4th to 6th... Issue 1: not every LEGO element is made there, they have factories in several countries (the sets themselves are designed in Billund yes).
Issue 2: sadly "The Vault" only seems to have sets issued in Europe (at least in the earlier years), I have many from the mid '70s I'd expected/hoped to see & only saw a couple.. :(

@Purple Dave:
First off, why are you always so rude and obnoxious how you reply? I think I would actually enjoy your commentary but you are just so nasty about it.
I looked at all of your hair suggestions. I do in fact have those "red" hair-pieces", but none of them look sexy nor feminine. The shoulder length hair is on many girl mini-figs, but I always found it a very very unattractive hair piece.
Also, Peppers hair in the movie is not the shade of Hermione's or Mary Janes Hair. It is a very bright strawberry color, and she wears it up in a pony tail for most of the movie, so I found it to be the most fitting. Other then the new hair element found on Agent Trace in the new Agents sets, I find the pony tail one of the cutest girl's hair elements.
What would have work best perhaps, although it might be too long, its the hair in the new girl's hair piece in the new Agents set, which is by far the sexiest hair LEGO has ever made.

@GeekyNerdGuy:
It is by design. When I was there working with the systems team, I asked the same question. They automate the process of tabulating the most requested misplaced or lost pieces in each kit, and automatically include those spare parts - this reduces the number of calls and requests they get for spare/missing parts, and handling the replacement part calls is far more expensive than pre-including the parts you are most likely to call about. This, like many things Lego does at their factory, is ingenious...

I know I'm away late on this; opportunity probably lost, but I'll post anyways, as I feel it's a valid point.
I loved my Super Car and would, even at my mature age, get back into the physically operating things like suspensions, transmissions, engines, steering, and other MECHANICAL functions.
Over time, Lego seems to have accentuated the fantasy, movie connection, and parallel markets at the expense of "real world," operating, items.
Why?
