Top Tips on Socialising Pets and Bots, Courtesy of WSJ

The Wall Street Journal has a great feature this morning about pets and household robots, such as Roombas and Pleos. Writer Andrew Lavallee has compiled all sorts of anecdotes—including useful tips on how to bed your pet in with the 'bot in your life, including protecting your Sony Aibo from cat bites (cayenne pepper and Cholula hot sauce applied to the 'bot butt, apparently). One dog owner told off the Roomba in front of his mutt, and the dog never lunged at the robot vacuum again. [WSJ]

Older cat ignores our new Roomba, or watches it from the couch, which is his usual perch. Younger cat stalks it, advancing and retreating, curious more than fearful, or watches it from half way up the stairs, where Roomba can't go. Well see how this progresses.

My dog notices it running and gives it a look every now and then but doesn't particularly care. I used to stick her toys on top of it, and she'd nervously creep up and timidly steal them back until she realized that it wasn't going to react in any way. I think she's figured out that it's not alive.

Hmm. I don't think I've ever actually let my family's roomba run while near the dog. Time for an experiment...

From the WSJ: Another Pleo owner, Maggie Spencer, has gone as far as to broach the idea of robot-to-robot interaction with her Roomba.
She showed the Pleo, named Linus, the vacuum in its turned-off state and warned Linus that the cleaner would make noise when it started up. "When the Roomba hit him, he was fine," says Ms. Spencer, a Harrisburg, Pa., psychotherapist. "I raise him like I did any other pet, not to be afraid of things."
Um, ya... And these are the people we pay to care for people with mental problems?

LOL! Poor dog! I wonder when robots will take over "traditional" pets! - like Sony's Aibo. Here's a nice article discussing the advances in robots, AI and personalities. [www.internetevolution.com] It makes me wonder how would I feel about having a robot dog around the house and what would happen to real dogs.
