Sony Ericsson's Alicia Walkman Phone Tour Video is Slicktastic
Posted by Jason Chen at 8:06 AM on June 13, 2008
Sony Ericsson's upcoming "Alicia" Walkman phone has a very interesting circle on the outside of its flip-casing. This video lets us in on its secret—it's a display? If we're interpreting it correctly, the front surface might have two displays, one small square one on top of the larger circular one, which also acts as a control pad for music, weather, and other apps. Hmmm, a portable music device that has a square on the top and a circle on the bottom. Where have I seen that before? Oh right, the Zune. [Se-nse]

@ Evangelion OMG like totally... you know what? I see these cars that have 4 wheels and four doors all the time they must totally be copying my Jetta. Oh and what about all those rectangular tv's with buttons on the front for volume and channels... this is crazy WHERE'S THE JUSTICE.

Zune? seriously? Zune? Did you forget all about the Chocolate, man?
Seriously... Zune?

Too much time in the video is spent on the "Creating playlist" progress bar. I sure hope it doesn't take that long. Why emphasize an administrative task?

@92BuickLeSabre: I think sony's marketing has always been a problem. Their mp3 players are outstanding but we never hear about them. In terms of sound quality theyre second to none. The walkman's should be giving the ipod nanos and the zune a run for their money but sony simply doesnt hype them up enough if at all.

Man, I love their designs too.
This seems so outstanding, but their marketing makes the viewer do too much work.
The iPhone? It tells me how awesome it is.
This? It makes me figure it out.
The average commercial viewer doesn't want to figure sh't out.
He/She wants to be told.
So tell us SE. Cause we should be buying your stuff.

A circle and a square? Like an iPod's screen and click wheel?

'Hmmm, a portable music device that has a square on the top and a circle on the bottom. Where have I seen that before?'
You know, it wasn't funny the first time and now it just comes across as a little sad.
It's a phone, a flip phone at that and the wheel would seem to have a display inside it.
Show me a flip iPod with a display inside the scrollwheel and then start making sarky comments.

@Step666: Hate to troll, but I have to agree with you on this one.
Looking good. I'm always lost between Walkman phones and Cybershot ones. But that new Cybershot one is looking TOO hot... have to wait for it.

well personally i think this is way better executed than the zune's
I like how it looks and the clock fits perfect in the circle giving the phone more of a mysterious mixed with elegant type look.
I wouldn't buy it because im already used to having a smartphone and a phone with a qwerty keyboard but jeah its a nice phone for those who want multi-media cellphones.

I don't know why you guys are complaining about the Apple references. If it wasn't for Apple, phones that play music and portable music players and cell phones wouldn't exist. I'm pretty sure if it wasn't for Apple, none of these other companies would be able to make any of these devices because all they ever do is just copy whatever Jobs puts out.

Yeah, because that's not how transistor radios used to look in the fifties. Seriously, first comment was right; it wasn't funny the first time, and now it's just twatty.
Other music players wish they had Sony's sound quality.

@bandit: that'll probably be the 'SensMe' feature - it creates playlists on-the-fly based on your current mood.

@92BuickLeSabre: I think this is the demo video that comes pre-loaded onto the phone.
It's designed to be played by handsets in shops, so it doesn't need to tell you everything about the phone because there'll be a spec list right there.

Okay, so is the circle also a lcd screen?
The ad has several pics inside the circle.
I guess that would be cool, especially considering how small the outside screen (square) appears to be.
With such a small outside screen I feel like I can't really take it serious as a media player.

Zune?
Don't you know that's a squircle on the front of the Zune and not a regular circle?

@snakepliskin: Agreed. And every so often I see some really cool SE product pop up on Giz, and then I never, ever hear about or see it again. In the press, in advertisements, on the streets - nowhere. Unreal.

That's a beautiful design. Always owned Ericsson, then Sony Ericsson phones. In my opinion, they have some of the best design around.

@snakepliskin: My post from some time between 6:54 and 7:49 may re-appear, but if it doesn't...I totally agree.
It blows me away how often some cool SE product (or idea...who even knows) pops up on Giz and then is never heard from again. No articles. No ads. No buzz. No sightings in the wild.
It's bizarre.

Man, that is one cool ass phone. Slicker than snot on a doorknob. I totally agree with you guys about their marketing, though. Show me the damn product and what it does and no fast cut-aways, or pseudo music video b.s. I want to know what it does and what it looks like and where I can get it (how much it costs would be nice but that is asking way too much).

@willentrekin: I know! Sony has the best sound quality, my walkman hands free sounds way better than anything else on the market!
now, the interface to move around options sucks sweaty testicles and doesn't seem to be moving in the right direction any time soon... when you compare a sony phone to a motorola, the SE is king, but once you compare it to samsung or even mention "apple" the comparison stops.

Yeah... but the screen looks itsy bitsy tiny... That unfortunately is SE's style too.... I'm almost afraid to ask, but does it also have SE's proprietary fast port connection too?.... When is that new standard for cellphone connectors supposed to come out again that all the big phone manufacturers were talking about a while ago?...

Meh. Doesn't do anything for me. And I don't understand the marketing decision to focus on the phone's ability to make you wait for playlists to be created.

Sony Ericsson always gets points for kickass design on their phones. Unfortunately, it loses all of them by hanging onto two absolutely horrible concepts:
- External headphone dongle (i.e. no builtin headphone jack on the phone, and it's a friggin walkman phone)
- Hissing added to all the music it plays - which gets annoying fast, and as a result, the playback quality is easily beaten by lesser phones such as the Motorolas.
