Sony Ericsson C905 Leaked Shots Show the 8.1 Megapixel Body
Posted by Jason Chen at 3:20 AM on June 17, 2008
The leaked Sony Ericsson C905 Cyber-shot phone already has spy shots of it in the wild, detailing its rounded body and sliding face. The guy who played with it says it's 20mm thick and weighs 136 grams, which isn't all that bad if you're taking into account the fact that it's also an 8.1-megapixel camera. Two more shots after the jump. No shots that show the lens, unfortunately.

This is hot. But I'd rather see a 5 mpx with optical zoom. What do people actually use camera phone pics for anyway? Blogging, Facebook and perhaps the occasional slideshow and print. Everyone still uses a dedicated camera for "serious" pictures, so 8 mpx is just overkill.

I like it. I've always hated "camera-phones" since their inception and the only reason my cellphone has a camera on it is because it's pretty much impossible to get one with out one anymore. But this isn't a "camera-phone," it's a "camera/phone." Every once in a while, I'd like to have a camera on me, but not often enough to actually warrant buying one and keeping it on me at all times, just in case. My phone is already on me all the time, but the camera on it sucks. There's no way I'll ever take real pictures with that thing. Not to mention, there's no good way to get pictures off of it. Yeah, I know I probably don't need the 8.1 megapixels, but whatever. My main fear is the cost...

Looks interesting, though i think i'd go for the X1 first. Wish the X1 had a 5 MP camera though, even though i know that megapixels don't affect the quality of the picture. I don't know why, i have this obsession with having my tech have the highest of everything.

I'm never far from a computer if I need to ask a general question, and I don't care enough about gps and the rest of that shit because I know my city, or I check google maps beforehand! Plus I don't want to take my phone to the gym, hence I have a small mp3 player, I don't want my brick of a phone attached to my arm.
Given though, when I finally get a new phone, it will probably end up with all this shit on it anyways! I do like the nice pretty screen and graphics though...

@sonar_un: They don't need them, people just like the numbers. 12 megapixel Crapola Brand Chinatown street corner cameras take shitty pictures, but look, THEY HAVE 12 FRAKKIN MEGAPIXELS! That said, many of the better phones made now, like the iPhone and its 2MP camera take very passable shots for every day phone-shooting. They're not going to be frameworthy by any stretch of the imagination, but they get the job done. It matters more to me that it can handle more light conditions than take super clear shots. If it looks good on the phone's display, that's all that really matters.

@sonar_un: Most people don't need 8MP, at most average camera users need is 3 maybe even 5. The industry knows how naive most consumers are and they think the higher the megapixel the higher the quality and the better it is, that is NOT the case.

@Kramen loves her MBP: I disagree, I think all cell phones need an 8MP camera. Regardless of weather or not 8MP really makes a difference in image quality.
The fact is, eventually your cell phone won't be a cell phone so much as a personal communication / entertainment device. In that regard, 8MB is great! 8GB of memory would be better, 3D video would be better...
Eventually it will all come, any innovation is just one step further in creating a do all / everything in your pocket device.

@Platypus Man: You don't have to buy a camera phone there are phones without cameras, Then you have the nerve to complain about the camera on the phone just because you bought a crap cameraphone. You don't have to use it , its not compulsory and as you pointed out if you only want to take the odd picture it is great especially if you buy a decent camera maybe a cyber shot 5mp model
"Not to mention, there's no good way to get pictures off of it. "<<< Thats because you got a crap phone ffs. It is as easy to transfer photos off a phone as a camera it called a f'ing usb cable
"Yeah, I know I probably don't need the 8.1 megapixels, but whatever. My main fear is the cost..."<<< if you had not wasted your money on a crap phone in the first place you would not need to buy a new one.

Looks like a k800, but with rims and suicide doors. At least SE didn't forget to make almost decent looking phones.
@Kramen loves her MBP: 2mp would be fine too, but what makes the difference is auto-focus, some kind of flash and better sensors. SE was at least the first to understand this. My old k750 still makes better pictures than most of today's point and shoots.

I think what they're trying to do with this one is instead of having a phone with a camera addon, they are working to make a truly hybrid device. One that has a camera capable of taking pictures that compete with other compact digital cameras and that has a phone that completes with the best cell phones on the market.
Of all the cell phone cameras I have seen, I have not met one capable or capturing an image as well as any of my compact digitals.

@Kramen loves her MBP: Your comment about higher megapixels not necessarily being better is absolutely right, especially on a camera phone. They just aren't up to digicam standards, yet. My son has an HTC 6800 and I think it's just a 2 megapixel and it takes really nice pics, for a phone, that is.

Once you have good camera phone, you don't even realize you need it. After all the shit phones SE been craping, this one might be a better alternative instead of the iphone's touchy goodness, at least for what I need.

S.E K-series and W-series has a cult following in the UK,
because people in the U.K love sending pictures and videos to each other vis bluetooth, in school, after a good night out etc...
Looking forwards to getting my hands on the following phones in the next few months
N96
X1
iPhone 3G
HTC Diamond...
just had the S.E C902 in 2 days ego.. sick sick phone, the built quality is solid and the camera quality is better than the N82 and the 95 8GB (which after testing all the 5mp cam/phones is the best so far.
sold 15 in two days (my store in based in a little town in Wales in the U.K)
last note: If 100% of the UK iphone buying population was to be made aware of the bluetooth been crippled in the iPhone the sale will drop 50% guaranteed. bluetooth is HUGE here

@ichi1: OK, I suppose it's possible to buy a phone without a camera, but at least where I am, that also means the lack of a color screen, so yeah, my phone has a camera. Thing is, though, when I bought it, I knew the camera would suck and I didn't care. Still don't. I don't use it to take pictures because it has a terrible camera. I do think that there might be some situations where I would take pictures, but not enough to carry around a decent camera with me just in case.
And my phone is a phone with a tacked on camera. The reason there's no USB port or anything like that is because it's... a phone. And it's not a crap phone. It works well for making calls. The crappy camera does not make it a crappy phone. I did not waste my money.
I didn't buy crap technology and I'm not moaning about how it doesn't work as well. This, I think, looks like it has a camera decent enough to be a "real" camera, and there's a phone there too, so I only need one device. I never expected my phone to take brilliant pictures. @ichi1: I don't care if you want to call it a "style phone" or anything like that. I like the way it looks and I don't give two craps what other people think about it. When it comes down to it, it's a friggin phone. It makes and receives telephone calls. That's the important part and that's why I bought it. Its specs? Let's see... it makes telephone calls! Check! It also receives them. Check! Color screen (I don't care that it's OLED). Check!
You put way too much care into what a phone looks like. Yeah, it's nice if it looks good (and I think this one does, but not excessively so), and even if it didn't, it wouldn't matter. Function far over form. It. is. a. phone. The rest is completely inconsequential.
And this isn't "bad gadget choice." It's not even a gadget. It's a phone. I sought out to buy a phone that did what a phone does, not a sleek super-expensive do-everything gadget. Guess what? I got one. Maybe if I were trying to pass this thing off as an awesome gadget, but I'm clearly not.

Regardless of most aspects, an 8 mega-pixel camera inside a cell phone is better than a 3 mega-pixel camera inside a cell phone. Perhaps not by much, but if mega-pixels made as little difference as everyone here is saying, then it's logical that they wouldn't be advertised at all by any camera manufacturer. Yes, there are other factors which increase image clarity and photo quality, but it's a fucking cell phone.
An 8.1 mega-pixel camera in a cell phone this size is fairly impressive. I'm not one who flips out about this kind of thing, but I'm also not sitting on the fence waiting for a digital single-lens reflex camera to be slapped onto my iPhone.
I don't know why I'm defending Sony Ericsson; I've had nothing but bad experiences with their products.
