NXP Cell Modem Will Pull Down 150Mbits, Connect to Just About Anything
Posted by Adrian Covert at 7:40 AM on June 13, 2008
NXP's new softmodem will be the fastest in the world and work with a range of data protocols, including LTE, WiMax, HSPA, UMTS, EDGE, GPRS and GSM. While the modem's over-the-top theoretical speeds will be sharply limited by available cellular networks, its network-promiscuity will allow for actual global phones that would be able to connect to fast data services almost anywhere in the world. Expect the hardware to start turning up in phone starting Q2 2009. [SlashPhones]

No CDMA?

Oh, sure - global phones. If it were that easy, why haven't we had these from the beginning? And don't give me the excuse that carriers like to tie us into their networks and charge us ridiculous sums of money. That is malarkey. Carriers love their customers and would never do that.
Besides, I know for a fact that image is photo-shopped. The sky never looks that blue when there are big white wavelengths bouncing off of antennas.

I'm pulling down 5Mbit in my HOUSE with comcast broadband. And that's if I'm lucky. I call BS on 150 claim.

@Wireless Joe: CDMA is a dying technology, has been for quite a while now. Australia no longer supports it at all. It's all WCDMA (UMTS/HSDPA) now!

I know, I just like hearing it.

Only 150Mb/s? That's nothing! The ethernet cable I plug into my cable model is capable of 1 Gb/s!

Well, LTE is very from showing up. It's pretty much just an idea. We'll have to wait and see, here's an article in [www.internetevolution.com] saying why LTE will dominate over WiMax
Regarding CDMA not included, they use completely different technology as GSM. WiMax and LTE share the same concept (OFDM), so having compatibility shouldn't be too much of a problem (but there's no standard for LTE, yet).
Another article in [www.internetevolution.com] talks about current 3G mobile traffic.
