Mouse-Calculator-Numeric Keypad Mashup is From Canon, Confusingly
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 7:40 PM on June 13, 2008
Forget DSLRs: Canon has a new gizmo for us. The "industry's first" mouse with a calculator and numeric keypad is a 1000dpi optical USB mouse that flips open to a full keypad and 10-digit LCD screen. And yes, you read that correctly: the LS-100TKM is from Canon, not Brando. Strange... but if you're an accounting type who needs a calculator and keypad for your notebook, this might be the ticket. Available in Japan at first for around US$32, in early July. [Impress]

@simmo: I don't know how huge those older calculators that you're talking about are, but, tape calculators have the advantage of producing a tape printout. When I calculate settlements, I like that printout and the one I use is smaller than most laptops.
Also, with regard to old-fashioned solar calculators, there's nothing wrong with a gadget that does everything its expected to with 100% reliability, no lag time, and without using any power in a footprint that usually is not larger than a keypad.

Probably a reason why its an industry first ;)
I agree Accountants on the road will like it. Its funny coz in their offices they still have their trusty huge calculator from the 1980's or older.

Perhaps it lacks multitouch, but the haptic feedback definitely makes this a must buy.

I'd like to quip wittily about its lack of multitouch, but I'm afraid my good friend klaybc has beaten me to the touch over here: [gizmodo.com]
Instead I figure why not take the pretentious fanboy jerk-ass route and thank my lucky stars I shoot Nikon.

reminds me of the credit card size calculator Canon introduced in the 80's.
Odd branding tests?

The only problem I can see with these is that when you start pressing keys on the calculator, your cursor will move on the screen, dumping entered numbers all over your doc/sheet. Does it have an emergency brake to set to keep your cursor where you place it?

Any journalist wanting to fact check the notion that this is an industry first could simply have typed "calculator mouse" in google and disproved beyond a shadow of a doubt.
sadly we do not live in a era where vetting in considered a worthwile exercise.
yes I know you're being facetious but even printing it leds the statement veracity it doesn't deserve...
Also you seen to be implying that canon doesn't make computer products and accessories. That's a business they've probably been in for close to 30 years at this point.

"So you came up with this?"
"Yes!"
"You're fired."
"What? Why?"
"Because either you have real work to do and you're not doing it. Or your completely non-essential to anything that matters here at Canon."
"Awwww. :("
"Did you just say ':('?"
"Yes."
"God, we should have fired you a long time ago."
":p"
"Okay, I'm calling security."

Hmmm I wonder if Canon has a royalty agreement with Dell who holds a patent for a numerical keypad in a mouse. Patent #5,457,480 granted October 10, 1995.

A Canon product? For $32?! Surely a trailing zero was dropped along the way.

I have a bunch of Canon Calculators, and they are actually the predicessor to this. They have a USB cable and you can use them as a numeric keypad. They are great when you want to do data entry into a laptop (which this mouse whould also probably work well for).
