Mobile Phone Pics Get You Custom Colour Sneakers in Nike PhotoID Promo
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:10 PM on June 16, 2008
The idea behind Nike's new PhotoID scheme is that you take a picture with your mobile phone and MMS it to Nike's computers. These grab the two dominant colours and send you back an image of a 1985 Dunk high-top basketball sneaker with the colours mapped on. Cool, but here's the neat bit: you can buy the sneakers. Clever bit of PR from Nike, but it does mean you could get a pair of sneakers in hues to match your fave photos... be that sandy yellow and ocean blue, or clean bedsheet white and nubile-skin pink if you're into that sort of mobile phone photography. Launches today, but you'll have to be in one of nine European countries if you fancy trying it out. [The Guardian]

So, when I send in a pic of my buddy puking up his dinner after a drinking binge...I wonder what the sneakers would look like....

@92BuickLeSabre: Ah, the wonderful world of color gamut conversion... where all intense RGB colors go to die in CMYK hell (aka cmyKO'd), and vice versa.
On the plus side, weak, limey greens and salmon-ish light reds are all the rage this season. er, something. I'm guessing it takes some liberties with the actual color values...

Having used Nike ID twice, I had mixed results. The shoes looked pretty good but the colors don't come out the same as on the screen, so I can imagine this turning out being a nightmare. They did make them quickly and send them in some great packaging though. It's hard to get a good representation of color going across an RGB screen and using various shoe making materials.

I wish I could send them a picture of some shoes, and they could make the shoes. The best pair of shoes I ever owned was a pair of Nike "after-game" slip-ons. Super-comfortable, and they lasted more than 5 years. Alas! They don't seem to make anything like that now, nor have I been able to find anyone who does. I'm wearing some kind of Propét slip-on walking shoe now, but while it fairly comfortable, it's already starting to come apart at the seams after less than a year.

Either they're really small shoes or really big golf tees.
