Leica Ad Pixelates Man's Best Friend
Posted by Mark Wilson at 1:40 AM on June 13, 2008
In one of the cleverer advertisements we've seen of late, Leica is proposing that you "see it in more detail" with their D-Lux 3 by placing a pixelated dog in various real world scenes. It's a strangely effective technique, but we can't believe that someone would be so cruel to do that to a dog. Shame on you, Leica. Bad! Bad!
Seriously though, from what other shots reveal, the assembly process took hours of precise supergluing:

That's fucking brilliant! And it goes right with that 8-bit water spout street art over in London that made the rounds on the tubes a while back.

@Geckotek: Hey! I patented that thought_ Kidding it's your's - same thing hiot me as soon as I read this_
Then they could have re-positioned it or moved some of the coloring around to account for lighting conditions...

Wouldn't have been easier to use one of those Wordarts that come with MSOffice?

Ah, yet another amazing Lego creation!
@P3nnst8r: Mine too. My eyes are having a hard time focusing anyways, due to sleep deprivation, and this is just making it worse.

Why the heck didn't they just use Legos? No gluing required!
Geckotek
Keighvin
Posted 1:32 AM 13/6/08
If only they had some sort of block that would simply snap together via pre-determined joints with a high degree of orthogonal precision, saving them hours of precise gluing.

Those marketing folks are always coming up with crazy ideas like this. My favorite was a campaign in New York where a Starbucks marketing employee would get into a taxi but purposefully leave their Starbucks mug on top of the taxi (it has a strong magnet on it, so there is never a danger of it coming off). The first person that came up to remind them that they had a mug up there (the "good samaritan") would be thanked and handed Starbucks gift certificates. Brilliant concept that I believe got national airtime, and it only cost Starbucks a few sheckles to pull it off.

@PushTheButton:
Where's the hook? Hmm, maybe it's the fact that tens of thousands of people on the internets are now talking about their store and mentioning their name?
I think it's a brilliant campaign.

There may be a bit of a verbal pun in the add giving a nod to Laika [en.wikipedia.org] .

@justinpe: When people start thinking like that, they end up with crap. That's why we have countless Photoshop disasters lingering around this planet.
In this case, originality + photography = creative genius.

You know, I said pixel doggie was LEGOs from the start! (read my comment on the original thread!) Yes, I know I have an *unhealthy obsession*.
You know she is way lucky to be made of LEGOs rather then the of blurry pixels....

I doubt it would have worked with LEGO bricks - the art of the idea is in the detailed craft to trick the eye I assume
bit of a generic idea for Leica though - any decent digital camera could have done this
