Inside Voodoo's Gorgeous Omen Gaming Desktop: Totally Tubular
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 9:20 AM on June 12, 2008
Voodoo's Omen gaming desktop is the best-looking one around. But we (and gamers) care about inner beauty too, and the insides shot by Pocket Lint look like the Matrix's people farm with all of the magenta tubes and cables flying around--a far cry from its clean, steely exterior, though about as neat as one can expect of such an intricate cooling system. It's definitely designed around heat dissipation, though I'm not totally sold on the whole rotated motherboard.
Also, it doesn't look like you have a whole lot of maneuverability inside the case, at least from the pics--granted, if you're spending that kind of coin on a build-to-order PC, I don't know how much tooling around inside you'd be doing anyway. [Pocket Link]

...they should just sell the case. I'd still be willing to pay some ridiculously inflated rate. I'd shell out a few hundred easily.

wow what a rip off
everything in that case is an off-the-shelf part
why not just build it yourself for 1/3 the price?

@peacefulpony: ok, so one of two things must be true:
A) either you've never tried building your own system, in which case you shouldn't comment on something you don't know about.
Or;
B) you've tried building your own and it sucked, in which case don't assume that those of us who know what we're doing have the same results.

A lot of people don't build their own PC's because it generally produces an interior product. System builders know how all the parts fit together without any compatibility issues. This alone is worth the markup in the price, IMO. I don't want some crashing, flakey computer to ruin a good experience just so that I could save a few bucks.

The custom copper tubing surrounding the inside whole case is not an off the shelf part.
I've read all the posting of the popular blogs sites regarding this machine and everyone says the same. You can build it for less. Yes you can, but some of us don't have the time or resources to pull off this type customization unless we do it for a living i.e. Ben Heck. But those who don't have the time and have the funds and willing to pay a convenience cost ($7000) to have some uniqueness. Well hats off to them and tell them to buy us all one.

its that difficult to plug in a few pieces of hardware? you don't have to be ben heck yo plug part A into slot A and part B into slot B.
even the liquid cooling looks to be just swiftech parts.
and the "copper cooling pipes" look to be just the onboard heatpipes that come on the asus motherboard.
no wonder there are so many apple fanboys on here - i feel like most people on here couldn't identify a stick of ram if it bit them on the nose.

The advantage to building it yourself is cost, you can save a lot if you know what you're doing. The downside is the surprises, the red hot video card causes lockups with the motherboard you chose, there's no drivers that work with the game you got that don't crash the sound card. There's a lot that goes into a game machine since by their nature is pushed to it's limits.
Systems like Alienware seem like a ripoff, until you build one and run into the maze of problems. It's not just the time you put into putting it together, but whether all the things you chose will work together. It's a risk you take compared to a company that buys all the stuff, and tests it ahead of time.
Cooling is easy, just buy a case (if you do it yourself) that has two 120mm vented case holes over where the memory, CPU, and video card are located. Buy three 120MM fans with lights so you can tell if one fails, two blowing in from the side, and one going out over the hole all cases come with in the back for a fan.
The fans are like $11 each and they will create a vortex of air across key components. Water cooling is overkill unless you're going to do something insane with overclocking, and most people never push for such limits, it's just not worth the cost.

For people who´re used to paying for their lack of skills in one area (perhaps they got the money from skills in another area or was born into riches) this machine is cool, rockingly cool, it does what it promises, and delivers to those who want to spend their dough on something like this.
Personally I love the design - Gimme the box and I´ll build it myself, no can do you say? Darn...
Oh well... Have to make do with a Coolermaster then or maybe sculpt my own. ;)

I wonder if it will be one of the first to spot the new GTX 280 cards or not.
I'm waiting for those and Nehalem to finally make an appearance and prices to go down... then I will strike with my will to build a new PC with older but still awesome parts.

Thats a nice interior...
As to building a computer, nowadays its become a lot more easier. I built my first one a couple months ago and quite honestly, it was really simple. Given the issues I had afterwards were a mild pain, but it was a learning experience. Besides, being able to load up a computer without bloat-ware is AMAZING! My computer boots up from turn on to desktop in 42 seconds. By keeping a careful eye on everything I install I'm able to minimize what gets started and what is running on the computer since I have put everything on there myself.
However, the biggest issue is still drivers as everyone says. I could not get certain software to work until I located the drivers off the internet.
Oh, and if you want a good cooling case, I recommend the Antec900. 4 Fans, 3 120mm, 1 160 (or 180 can't remember). Option to add one to the side panel. Only thing is noise though, if you want a less noisy option, I've been told to swap the fans for another brand.

Posted 10:19 PM 12/6/08
@Hello_Newman: I disagree I'm afraid - drivers issues can hit any system, no just self-built ones.
There's no way Voodoo can test the drivers on the system they provide with all the games on the market, let alone upcoming releases and they'll use the same drivers direct from the manufacturer that you or I would do when building our own rig, so there's just as much chance of problems.
@trogam: yeah mate, Antec's fans are crap. I never even tried mine when I got my P180, swapping them out was the first thing I did.
Go for something like the Scythe Slipstream or S-FLEX fans or the Noctua models, they're really quiet but still acceptably powerful.

@Hello_Newman: You make some good points for the noobies out there, those mistakes you listed I ran into during my first build 5 years ago. However, my recent build, I spent some time on the net researching the components first to make sure others had tried them all together and they worked well. Now I have a real kick ass system which so far hasn't even hiccuped once, plus I'm running XP Pro and can dual boot Vista 64-bit, which I'm 'testing' right now. Thoroughly kick ass, and 1800 bucks, top to bottom and that INCLUDES my 22 inch Samsung LCD from Costco. YEAH BABY!
Gigabyte X38 blah blah
e8400
4gb DDR2 1200
2 Hitachi 750s
1 Raptor 150gb for OS
Cosmiq case - ooooh so pretty, so quiet, so cool
some modular 1000 watt PS
my favorite keyboard/mouse yet - Logitech Wave (you better tell someone!)
Samsung DVD DL burner (f$#@ BR until the blanks come down in price)
Hmmm, I'm probably forgetting something else - oh, I bought a new router and it kicks ASS over my old one.
Oh, and btw, the inside of MY build looks even BETTER than this bad boy - modular PS ROX!

@Manok: Not really, if you can buy everything from one store that makes it incredibly easy.. The hard part in my opinion, is choosing the hardware and doing the research into finding the best value dealer to obtain the parts. The assembly is very straightforward.
One problem with this is, the typical user who will willingly throw out $7000 for this PC because he [possibly] didn't feel technologically capable of doing the job himself will not be able to bleed and refill the watercooling after running it for a good while. The water is not indefinitely immune to change, unless Voodoo somehow re-invented watercooling...

Ok I only have 2 things to say, first there are some people who would rather pay a buttload to get a prebuilt rig from some companies with certain companies it is about 2 things name recognintion and some companies go through quite a lot of trouble to pre configure and tweak the end product. But my main reason for this post is this and no one seems to have picked up on it:
Being that the MB is rotated 90° clockwise the traditional "backpanel" is now facing the case as they are using an off the shelf MB how are they connecting things such as keyboard mouse and monitor etc to the MB? Are there some custom extenders or something located in the case bringing that connectivity to the back panel or what is going on? Would be interesting to know considering it could give you the ability to mount the MB in any orientation with long enough extenders
