Bangai-O Spirits For DS Uses Old Timey Audio Recordings To Share Levels
Posted by Jason Chen at 4:20 AM on June 13, 2008
The Nintendo DS remake of the old Dreamcast favourite Bangai-O Spirits has one very notable feature that we haven't seen in years. Kotaku found out that instead of using Nintendo's local Wi-Fi or over-the-net DS codes, you share levels via audio recording. Once you've designed something you want your friends to see, it'll play back that level as an audio recording that you can record it as an audio file on your computer, then send however you send files normally.
To get the levels back on another DS, just play it back over your computer's speakers and hold up the DS mic to it--the mic will grab the sound and the game will change it back into level code. If only Nintendo didn't make their online system so horrible to use, the developers wouldn't have to resort to archaic methods that are pretty much on par with tin cans and strings. [Kotaku]

This game is made by Treasure?
Quite an interesting method of sharing levels.

@impliedsurprise: It was Captain Power. You had a toy jet and shot at the screen. Only saw the show once though.

The cool thing is that the 70-80s tech works in conjunction with the current tech - see the level on youtube, and I can place the DS right next to the speaker to get the game. Too bad I don't like the game that much.

@Rabid Penguin: I used to have the rock fortress, or whatever the hell it was called. It was fun when I was a kid :c) but it was actually pretty stupid and I generally used the rock fortress as a base for my Thundercats and Transformers rather than for it's intended use with the show.

that's awesome. I love it when you need to interact with your environment. Like that light sensor vampire game, or supermonkeyball.
i remember way back when, there was a saturday morning cartoon show that interacted with some toys or something. Was it lazer tag or something?
That's also why I love pinball. the physical act of being able to tilt the table and affect the ball has something that no video game can ever duplicate. at least not yet.
