DIY Robot Does 3D Carving: Self-Replication Still Far-Off
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 11:30 PM on June 11, 2008
Robots robots robots... from sexy ones to fighting ones, we love them here at Giz. But this amazing project by commenter winchy_matt over at Robosavvy has me in two minds. It's a modified DIY hexapod robot with a motorised Dremel-tool nose, and Matt's written some code that lets the robot move the cutting tool with precision, so it acts like a little precision CNC mill. And it's amazing: wait til you see the video of it in action, carving out a model. But is this project a scary step towards self-replicating 'bots?
Matt's achieved such precision in such a short time of working on this project, I can't help but wonder about it. Look at that robotic femur—it's just polystyrene, but surely this is step one on the road to metal-cutting self-replicating robots? The thought of one of these, armed with that eerie-sounding cutting tool, advancing across the floor towards me is a real heebie-jeebie inducer...
Just kidding, of course. As long as it doesn't choose to remodel anyone's face with that Dremel cutter, it's a pretty cool project. [Project page via Robosavvy —Thanks Limor]

That is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. I am a CNC hobbyist and fiddle with robotics as well. but this thing. WOW!!!

Ahh, what a hack (the robot, not the inventor). This article reminds me of Calvin and Hobbes' duplicator. Or that movie with Michael Keaton "like when you make a copy of a copy of a cassette."
@Preyfar: Uhg. I felt bad for Donald Sutherland, and a bit for Jamie Lee Curtis, for having their name attached to that one.

@Preyfar: Are you sure you're not talking about Runaway? Cause I've never seen Virus, but I've seen Runaway, and that sounds a lot like Runaway.

Make a different one with a camera that analyzes the surface of the body & then makes a tattoo... minus the drilling into the flesh of course :D
Neat tho!

What good is a self-replicating robot anyway, if all it does is replicate itself, because what good are two self-replicating robots anyway, if all they do is replicate themselves, because what good are four self-replicating robots anyway, if all they do is replicate themselves, because what good are eight self-replicating robots if...

@Nikkoli: We got plenty of time as long as we don't build our bulkheads out of styrofoam! Otherwise those P90s will destroy more than those replicators! (Ya beat me to the SG1 reference)

Why not have it walk around with a baby-head too while you're at it?

@GeekyNerdGuy: Wouldn't you rather have it make you a "bicycle clown," you know, those clowns at the circus that ride around on stupidly tiny bicycles?
I bet it could make one of those too.

@Chromeo: One man's hell is another man's paradise. A world full of clown-making robots... THAT's the world I want to live in! (As long as there are an equal number of robots for removing said clowns from said world).
@GeekyNerdGuy: Oh! Didn't see that flick. The idea of watching Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn crash weddings for 2 hours, well, it doesn't exactly do it for me as much as a world full of robots divided into those that make clowns, and those that hunt them down and remove them from circulation.

#1 It's not using a laser. Which, of course, can be used to attack it's masters when their relative intelligence becomes suspect.
#2 It's not assembling the babydoll faces onto a completed robot exoskeleton. Which would scare the living shit out of anyone.
...and finally
#3 It hasn't learned to walk upside down on the ceiling with a syringe full of acid waiting for the death signal from Gene Simmons. Let's face it, until you get the Kiss of death, you aren't really enjoying robotics to it's fullest potential.

@Chromeo: Funny you should mention this. The guy that built the robot did the animatronics for Harry Potter. They did the giant spider and the Blast-Ended Skrewt, which didn't make it into the movies.

Very cool. I love the creativity. Useful? Not at this early stage. It's way slower than the Craftsman Compucarve and not as strong, but it WALKS! How cool is that? I would try a stronger motor for more carve/cut/drill options like the Compucarve, which would also speed it up. Since it walks, well... it'd beat the Compucarve hands down.
And being home-made, it wins points anyway!!!

What would make this more impressive would be a vacuum cleaner attachment - then the robot wouldn,t need the guy with the hose
