Comcast Increasing Upload Caps By 2x/3x Tomorrow
According to leaked docs, Comcast is officially bumping up their previously tiny upload caps on two of their plans tomorrow. Their 6Mbps/384Kbps plan is becoming 6Mbps/1Mbps, and the 8Mbps/768Kbps plan is becoming 8Mbps/2Mbps. Some people might think they have this rate already because of Comcast's recently rolled out PowerBoost feature, which eliminates bandwidth caps on files of 10MB or less, and gives you a peak speed of about 2Mbps. This explains any extraordinarily high results you've been getting when using a bandwidth test site--which usually test uploads with files less than 10MB. Look out for this to hit tomorrow. See the official release after the jump.

Thanks tipster!

Sweet. Higher upload speeds are always better. :]
I have Comcast. I wish some form of FiOS would be available in my area, but sadly Comcast is the fastest it gets. :[

Too bad they won't let you seed on it? What's the increase in upload speeds for? Sending grandma your pictures in 2 seconds instead of 4? Oy.

I actually noticed a huge increase in upload speeds recently. I am often uploading 200+ mb files to my server (and other places) and it can do that very fast now. I think I went from around 40kbps upload to 150-250kbps upload! From unbearable speeds to hey, not so bad :)

Just ran a test for giggles at Speakeasy. 20085 down and 2624 up. I get 15600 down at work with Fios. I am almost, nearly, sort of impressed.
However in all fairness, Comcast still sucks.

I thought I was crazy when I was getting 100+ while seeding after I came back from a trip on 6/2. I used to get a paltry 42KB/s, now I see up to 140ish, with peaks of 300+ after undoing throttling of my upload. I'm glad they finally did something, I was getting tired of the crappy upload while gaming, or rather, other people were (allegedly). Seeing as how they blame dying on lag...

I noticed this increase in early May. (My usual cardboard home is under a Hwy 99 overpass in California, but I've relocated my blue tarp here in Japan for a while.)
Anyways, my Sling is pushing out that rate and it's great. I've been waiting for increased upload speed for some time. I have the "Gold Tier", which is the faster connection. While I don't get the theoretical 2Mbps upload throughput, it does usually average around 1.5Mbps and I'm happy about that. The picture really is better as one would expect and my old Slingbox Classic does the job beautifully.
As for the amount of bandwidth I use...well how much TV do you watch? Now multiply that by 1.5Mbps.

Even though the website lists 4Mbps I don't think they actually have it anymore. I know here last fall they bumped everyone up to 6Mbps where I live.

Don't worry they'll up the cap to 10MB down and 10MB/s UP speed, and then they're gonna cap your bandwidth to 10GB per month, so in theory you can run out of your allowed bandwidth within ~8,000 seconds or ~133 minutes :))
Not a ultimately realistic scenario but could happen :P

Sweet! Now I can increase my torrent upload rate from the puny 25KB/s to maybe as much as 50KB/s without a chance of killing my connection. Should mean much faster downloads with much less time spent seeding.
Might have to think about bigger hard drives now.

that's not really a "cap" in the a traditional sense, btw. those are just line speeds. a cap is when the ISP says you can only "upload/download Xgb/month" or something. in fact by upping the speeds it's probably the users will hit those caps that much faster.

don't much care about the upload rates - wish they'd increase the download rates to match Time Warner and Cox - seeing as how Comcast is the largest cable provider in the US - you'd think they'd be ahead of the curve or something_
Oh wait - well Microsoft is the largest software company in the world - but they are never ahead of the curve - nevermind_

This is just a PR move on their part, to insulate against the backlash when they move the 250GB/mo cap nationwide in a month or two. Goodbye "Unlimited Service". Screw Comcast, they could have done this a year or more ago.

@Vagari: How large is your image? If it's a 12mb it will take a bit but it shouldn't be that long unless flickr is holding you back. I imagine it shouldn't take longer than 20 seconds if you're getting the high speeds most people have been talking about (150kb/s)

Because EVERYTHING preceded by the word "rumor" is true, amirite? Buddy at Comcast confirms that the monthly cap is a crock. Why would they intentionally gimp their paying customers? I'll let you know when I get a "over quota" letter. In the meantime, I'll keep on seeding torrents to you.

@fusiongt: Usually they're full res jpegs. So about 3MB each. Doing some testing I used to get about 40kb/s. I haven't tested to see if I'm getting the increase in speed. But when uploading 150 photos even 150kb/s would be nice. :-)
