US$840 32-inch Digital Photo Frame is Complete Idiot Bait
Posted by Adam Frucci at 12:15 AM on June 25, 2008
News flash, guys: a 32-inch Digital Photo Frame is actually a really crappy HDTV with all the tuners and inputs pulled out of it. It is not a photo frame. Selling it as such is a way to use the products weaknesses as its selling point and to remove money from the wallets of the rich and stupid. Seriously, this thing costs more than many fully-functional HDTVs of the same size. Urge to kill... rising...
Yes, this OptiPix SP3200 32-inch HD "Digital Photo Frame" will set you back US$840, which is more than many 32-inch HDTVs from brands such as Sony, Samsung, Sharp and Toshiba. And you can even watch video on it, albeit only when its loaded on from an SD card, making it the most tedious and annoying TV ever. But guys, it has a frame around it! A frame!
But hey, your grandparents like these things, right? Isn't that how you justify their existence? This is just the logical extreme of the complete ludicrousness of this entire genre of products. If you buy one of these things, you deserve to have your credit cards taken away from you for your own good. [Product Page via TFTS]

OK...I agree completely...BUT.....If you were to get a good frameshop to frameup your artwork the costs could conceivably come in somewhere close to the cost of the photo frame. Not that I'd pay that much....but I've framed museum quality items that were smaller for around $400 bucks. So the stretch to 800+ doesn't seem quite so far fetched when you consider you can change the item being featured. Artwork with weather....Artwork with twitter....Artwork and daily calendar. Now it's interesting.

@genius74: How do you know it's not a three-wick, 24" bar of butter, huh, huh?
That would be awesome and convenient. Mood lighting and a nice spread for crackers. All you need is a bottle of Ripple and some Barry White on the stereo, and it's Katie-Bar-The-Door!

I kind of like the look of it though, how much do you think it'd cost to mat & frame a 32" aquos or something equivalent? Since I know I'd end up cutting off one of my fingers if I tried.

In an interesting product placement deal made with Pixar, Wall E will spend 90% of his time compacting unopened OptiPix sp3200s.
My favorite fun facts about digital photo frames is the bizarre aspect ratios that leave black bars bordering your photos and the screen resolution which makes every photo look like a study of dog feces.

Could they not have at least taken a photo of the real thing on a wall in a real room? That image is so obviously a horrid fake that whoever made it should have their copy of Photoshop taken away from them. If you're going to try to do a composite like that at least learn how to use the perspective distort tool, folks! (compare the right edge of the frame to both the left edge and the door frame to the right - an eight year old could have done better than that)

I have a couple of these. They are really great because they are so SIMPLE. Put in memory card, watch blurry photos because I don't have enough resolution... I'm hoping they come out with 40 inchers soon.

The idea of having to plug in a (relatively) expensive picture frame to display pictures that most people hardly change has got to be up their for the "most stupid" or "least green" award.

For less than $300 more, you can get a 32" Samsung 1080P HDTV that lets you display slide shows off of a USB stick.
For about $60 more, you can get a 720P that does the same.

Give me a digital photo frame that only uses power when you change images and doesn't require a backlight and you have my money. Until then, I just don't see the point in them.

Why hate on the TV? Its not a horrible idea, and the frame (and presumably better picture modes) make it a somewhat unique object. So what if most of us could hack this cheaper?
the thing I don't get is the 16:9 aspect ratio on many digital frames. Who the hell has lots of 16:9 photos. DSLR's shoot 3:2 and most people have 4:3 cameras. So a 3:2 digital frame would be ideal, and a 4:3 would be acceptable. A 16:9 nearly always leaves horrible black bars, especially on portrait orientation photos. They need to add panning modes, etc so at least you can use the real estate.

I'm sure this only has about a 45 degree viewing angle and 500:1 contrast ratio. It would be much better to go to Wal-Mart and get a 32" TV because even the cheapest of TVs is going to be better than this piece.

edit buttons destroy the integrity of the chronology and content of posts. typos be damned, on giz you better be sure you mean what you say, because theres no going back. imagine if people could change the wordings of their arguments AFTER someone has responded - now the responder looks like he's taken liberties with verbatim and context. slippery slope.
