3G iPhone First Hands On
Posted by Brian Lam at 6:38 AM on June 10, 2008
In my hand, the 3G iPhone is lighter, fits better, and noticeably thinner. I made a call with it, side by side with my 1st generation iPhone, and the reception is noticeably better as well. I can't even believe this is frigging AT&T anymore. I'd called Lisa and asked her if she noticed if it was clearer or not. She replied, "It's a lot better, but it's also better that you're actually calling me." A tough crowd.
The reception increase is partly to do with the new plastic back. There are 10 radios in here, counting 3 GSM bands, 4 3G bands, and Bluetooth and WiFi. (And one more I don't know?) I don't know how scratch resistant I believe it will be, but Apple says it will be more durable. It looks EXACTLY like the leaked images from awhile ago that were chalked up as iPhone 1 cases. I guess they were leaked.
With the slimming, Apple wouldn't specify whether or not the actual volume of the battery was the method of reduction. They also wouldn't say why 3g life was so good, but I picked up a hint that it was both software and newer 3G chips up to the task.
3G data on the maps and browser were only slightly slower than WiFi.
The locator tech wasn't working for me, on Maps. It spun and spun, probably because I'd turned the WiFi off.
I noticed that the iPhone asked me for permission to give both the maps program and the camera app permission to use my location. It reminded me a bit of a Vista security prompt. It's my phone, of course it can use my location. The camera app was actually using it to do geotagging!
The black is very very nice. The white? It's ok, but very feminine, so maybe it's good for Jason or Jesús.
I felt the screen wasn't as smooth as the previous, but that could be the fact that there was zero grease on it, unlike my personal phone. The screen's glass and LCD are identical to the previous iPhone's.
There still isn't any cut and paste, and Bluetooth software hasn't been updated to do A2DP, but the very smooth and impossible to derail from Apple Messaging Greg Joswiak didn't say the hardware wasn't improved. I asked if audio streaming was coming, and he looked hesitant to answer. (I'll take that as a yes.) Before he could answer, I spoke for him. "We don't comment on future product announcements." They also denied me a chance to take a photo.
There was a dock, very thin and rounded, with the phone sticking out of the face (there was no border from the dock obscuring the view. I also saw a 2 prong USB power plug much smaller than the old adapter.
Lastly, the metal buttons were chromed, and I frankly liked the black ones better. But these feel more precise, and indeed, the lock button is slightly more recessed than on the first generation phone. The buttons were not made metal for durability reasons, either; this was a pure design decision.
I also played Super Monkey Ball during my 15 minutes with the iPhone. I didn't like how to control the game, I had to set the screen to viewing angles that would compromise my view of the screen. But I did catch on how to play within a few seconds.
Audio? It was definitely clearer than the single mono speaker in the first iPhone.
Nothing has been left unimproved. If you're going to stick with ATT for awhile, US$200 seems like a good deal for such improved hardware. What's cool is that since the App store and a lot of the functionality in software will be coming to the first gen iPhone, current users don't really have to feel the pressure to upgrade. Me? I'm certainly going to.

yeah its good but its pretty half arsed effort really.
here's what i mean.
wifi run on B/G signals wheres the N so i can wirelessly sync between my MBP and iphone.
wheres the wireless sync with out the "cloud in the sky" interfering. i really hate cable and i want to rid the world of them.
wheres the front mount camera because isn't 3G with out it because i define 2g as digital voice calls 3g as digital video calls. saying that i have a front mount camera on my current phone and i haven't used it i tried but nobody else i know has got it activated.
wheres the increase in storage. that was the thing that would have sold me on it but now i'm going to get a n96 when it hits the street by then my old phone will be quiet rooted
why do they want to know where i am all the time??

Well I pad my $50 to Optus to "possibly reserve" my new phone. I was going to just use my existing sc but after reading about the Optus plans I think I might get my $50 back

Does the plastic case have any grip to it? Or is it just as hard to hold as the old one?
Hey, Steve. Design and function should go hand in hand. Just like being drunk and holding onto my iPhone.
That poor thing. I think I'm just going to frame it or something.

What's up with the Blackberry Bold fans? Doesn't that have a significantly smaller screen? I love watching movies and TV shows on the iPhone's screen, and stuff like Slingbox is going to make that all even better. What is it that you need to cut-and-paste that can't wait until you get back to the computer?

@keene: the iPhone is not ment to be a TRUE business phone from what i take.. which is why the Bold has its advantages and which is also why a significant amount of Fortune 500 companies and other business companies such as Deloitte. do not support the iPhone as one of their phones. It is much easier to type on a full keyboard that is raised and answer emails etc... So yes if you want a TRUE SmartPhone / Business phone then get your Bold, but don't make such ignorant comments when you are comparing apples with oranges. The iPhone is in a class of its own with a hell of a lot features that the Bold does not. Enjoy your "business" cubicle :)

@hillaryh8tr: VideoShare (at&t's video conferencing service) is only one way video at the moment so a front camera is not supported at the moment and is usually removed to keep costs down (the TILT also had the front camera remove for this reason).

Brian, we greatly appreciate the updates from you and Jason during WWDC, the live updates and the impartial initial reviews of the iPhone 3G.
However, this speaks to how jaded we've become - the hype now rarely living up to reality.
In the coming weeks, I'd like to see a review of all the rumors, speculation and pundit quotes posted on Gizmodo regarding the new iPhone - a preparation for the next big Apple (or other much hyped tech) release so you can save us from those sources proven to be wrong. I assume you have a strike system to screen these out, but given all the wrong guesses and the letdown of the latest iPhone, I think it will help refocus our expectations to something a little more reasonable...
Thanks again!

Uh oh. I was liking the white one. Oh well. I guess I should just come out of the closet now. Sorry, kids, I guess your father was the mailman after all.
Does anyone wonder if Apple has the ability to release this device first, but declined to put 3G in it knowing that they could get twice the revenue by waiting for version two? This really looks like what the iPhone should have been when it first came out. Admittedly, the applications take time to develop, but I still wonder why 3G was not in the device from the beginning.
Then again, no one has been able to catch up with the first iPhone's usability yet, so maybe I am answering my own question. I'll be quiet now.

Well I'm a bit disappointed about about a few missing features, but I'll probably buy it considering the addition of 3G and GPS. I can finally throw out one of my pocket gadgets (nuvi). MMS and Copy&Paste will probably come as a firmware upgrade. Totally possible, so no biggie. Memory bumps are probably coming up to 32GB (or more) later as they did with the 1st gen iPhone.. Biggest let-downs? No friggin flash/LED! C'mon! We use these things at night too, and a light (for video) and flash (for pics) would have been awesome. The 2MP isn't great, but its current performance beats my 3MP AT&T Tilt. And please, oh PLEASE tell me that it's at least possible to unlock the bluetooth chip's A2DP functionality. @Ken_Darrow - I can think of a great scenario where cut and paste would be really handy - the one where you get an SMS message from someone who sent it to you using MMS, and you get a non-link to a stupid AT&T website (viewmymessage.com) with a ridiculous giant ID and PW.
Anytime a smartphone makes you run for a pencil and paper, to me, it smells like fail.
And also, this MMS argument - 'why dont you just email a picture instead?' makes sense from the sending side of using an iPhone, but the unfortunate reality is that lots of people are NOT using iPhones, and its way easier for them to share a picture using MMS with their phone that they probably paid NOTHING for.
The irony is that I really like the iPhone, and I had one, and it got smashed, so I've been waiting for this announcement to see if I would replace it or not. Leaning towards not, now. The question is, whats going to be comparably good at the $199 price point?

Since the first iPhone was released, we've seen countless new tiny camera phone sensors on Giz. 2MP Cameras are so low-end in phones now, 5MP is the standard for high-end mobiles. And i bet we're only a few months away from seeing 7MP camera phones on the market. Apple doesn't even make the camera sensors, they're readily available, how they have failed to improve on a camera that was already below-par a year ago i will never understand. I think this further confirms Apple's strategy of milking as much money out of their customers as possible (as i'm sure they will be releasing a next gen iPhone in a year with features that should have been available in this (or arguably the last) generation.

@Kaiser-Machead is in your Macbook Pro!: I never implied Apple is tricking customers. Im merely saying that it would require very little effort to bring the camera up to scratch with the current standards. For a convergence device (which the iPhone IS) this should be an issue. I'm just saying where i think the iPhone is lacking, and my opinion is that Apple made a conscious decision to do this, and not for particularly good reasons.

My first impressions about the iPhone 3G:
- It's coming to Brazil officially, FINALLY!! But wait, I'm stuck in a contract with the other carrier... DOUGH!!
- The iPhone 3G will have some problems down here, 'cause our cell phone services are very expenses... I pay more than $80 for some shitty plan with only 180 minutes, few SMS and other stuff... Unlimited data plans cost more than $ 40 (EDGE)... Very difficult to become a best seller that way
- 3G technology has just arrived here so iPhone 3G will kind loose it most important improvement... Brazillians are not big Internet users in cell phones (at least not yet)
- I bet the iPhone 3G will cost around $ 500... Need to say more??
- In the other hand, I liked the new gen improvements, but the feeling that Apple could have done more is innevitable... I guess it was a bit of let down and with the software improvements coming to the first gen iPhone, buying a next gen can be postponed, for sure...
- I'd buy the iPhone 3G 'cause I like pretty much of my fist gen iPhone, but I'll wait until the release madness gets passed... Considering that the iPhone 3G will arrive in Brazil until end 2008, that would be 2009...

@GizmoTheGremlin: Are you serious? When the hell has Apple ever hyped the camera in their phone? When have they ever made a big boast about it? They show that it exists on the device, but other than that, no one is actually being conned out of anything. The specs are on the website, the quality of the pictures can be tested well before you plunk down any change on the device. Where the hell is the mystery? Who was tricked?
If you're hard up for a phone with a higher MP rate (which is actually not the end-all-be-all indicator of quality), then get a Cybershot Ericsson or anything with a 5MP camera.
I happen to have 12 megapixel camera that only costs $50 sitting around here somewhere. Strangely enough, the pictures are complete and utter shit. Yeah, that 12 megapixels really helps.

If I was just using it for my personal life I think it the 3g would be fine as billed. I love the way google maps works on my curve with GPS. It uses the triangulation to get me moving while it's making the GPS locks, works well! That would be good enough. @bitfactory: I understand a business needing to make money. I bought my MacBook as i thought it was good value (when considering the build quality, OS, after sales support). But when it comes to the iPhone, Apple seems to be overly taking advantage of its position by releasing a next-gen product with a few last-gen features. All things considering, there doesn't seem to be much effort (technologically) put into this version, and the reason why i think they are milking their customers is because i believe it is their strategy to NOT produce the best product (whereas Apple Computers have always been pushing the high-end) but to release what they can get away with, so they can keep their product cycle short. This seems like more of a refresh (ala MacBook Pros) and i think they should call it just that. The reason i gripe is that i love the iPhone OS and sync possibilities with my Mac/MobileMe however, my faith in Apple as a consumer friendly company is waining.

@ripfire: Considering in the UK, the iPhone is sold for much more than $199 (usually more around the $480 mark in Apple and O2 stores). There isn't a single phone here that requires such a cash sum to go along with an 18-month premium contract. So for a convergence device that is head and shoulders more costly than everything else, you would expect the convergence to have a semi-up-to-date camera. Apple got the bulk of the iPhone right the first time (particularly the OS, form factor) so I just expected the 2nd Gen to move forward in all areas (incl. camera + storage). Particularly when camera-phone sensors have moved on quite some way.

Sure, it is funny that after MONTHS of speculation about all the terrific and revolutionary things the iPhone 3G was supposed to have, all we got was just that: 3G. Oh, and GPS. Both things the original should have had anyways.
However, the price drop makes the whole package much more appealing. I never would have paid $499 for an 8gig iPhone, but I might pay $299 for one. I do like my Blackberry, though, so I'm sticking with it. Apple could have at least offered a memory boost.

I just followed live blogging yesterday. Nice and cool, intersting new stuff about the iPhone 3G (evolution, no revolution).
Besides deception of no "one more thing" related to Macs (which I predict will have a separate event in September, as soon as Intel is ready, to unveil the new designs and features)....
One thing I really miss is Apple's own applications in the iPhone. It's all good and right to have developers for the platform... But why on earth should I use TypePad for my small blog if I use iWeb on my Mac? Where is iWeb for iPhone, iPhoto for iPhone (albums, small corrections, presentations), Aperture for iPhone, iChat for iPhone (ok, maybe that one's there)...
I really wonder why Apple didn't concentrate more on delievering their own software to the iPhone.
And... The iPhone is interesting but not as revolutionary as I thought (camera still sucks (front camera I couldn't care less), A2DP (Stereo Bluetooth)...
Other things I miss?
- Nike+ for iPhone. I am not interested in a complete medical check up (app that was announced), but much more in an App that keeps track of my sport performances, weight etc.
- no announcement about new movie or music deals...
Maybe some of these will come soon (after all the WWDC is for developers, i.e. the people who will bring us this stuff). But I feel disappointed from a content perspective.

@EnochLight:
Actually I do know a thing or two about AGPS. Assisted GPS is where the iPhone has the receivers for GPS data, but it then sends the data over the 3G connection for processing on the assistance servers of your service provider. The assistance server then uses a combination is cellular network data, GPS data from the phone and reference GPS data from its calibrated and higher powered receivers to calculate position, and this is then sent back top the phone. None of the processing of GPS data (to determine position) is done on the phone.
There are several major drawbacks:
1)Because you are actively transmitting data on top of receiveing GPS signals, the battery drain is pretty significant.
2)The AGPS position shown will never be realtime. That means it cannot give you directions during your journey. There is no software fix for that, because the iphone simply lacks the hardware to do realtime GPS.
3)If you are in an area where the iPhone has to step down from a 3G to a 2G network, AGPS will be very slow. If you are in a rural area with poor reception, or no network, you will not be able to use AGPS at all.
4)Because AGPS relies on an assistance server to do the processing, the service provider has to have the assistance servers in the first place for it to work. I have had phones with AGPS before, but there is no assistance server on the cellular network here (NZ). I can't use AGPS at all. It is a non-feature for me, but it could be a serious drawback if there is no way to diable it.
So... How exactly is AGPS better than GPS?

Question is whether Atat is goin' straight 1500 for everyone or if they're gonna try and jack us for $40 plan to grant more txt w/o overages. Regardless, I ain't upgrading til the 32gb comes out... I'd say bout 6 months from now. :p

@GizmoTheGremlin:
Anyone that wants to take real photos will get a real camera and not use a cameraphone. Shoving more megapixels into the same space means you're increasing noise.
And have you seen phones that have 5-7 megapixel sensors? They would not fit in an iPhone!

@keene:
I'll tell you one thing the iPhone 3G does that your beloved Black Berry doesn't......... it doesn't have a distribution community with the ease, quality and support that the iPhone, the AppStore and iTunes can offer! Where can you go to get music, movies, games, software updates, etc... all in one stop for the Black Berry? That's what I thought! Not to mention a UI that Black Berry can't touch! I've had a Black Berry and a few Treos. They are great for business use only because of the Microsoft Exchange support. Now that the iPhone has Exchange, it's an all-in-one smart phone and true entertainment gadget. The majority of people want a phone that's easy to use, navigate, update, and use. Black Berry and Palms may pack a few extra options, but the majority of them go unused b/c most people don't know how to use them or they're not easily integrated into the phones functionality. Stop being a hater and be thankful that Apple and the iPhone entered the smart phone market. They are forcing the old, lame-ass smart phone makers to get off their butts and actually try to be innovative to keep up. If the Black Berry is your preference, then keep it. I promise you Steve Jobs feelings won't be hurt!

Well My Thinking about 3G is SPRINT OR VERIZON are the only TWO companies in the states with TRUE 3G Service....
EDVO ROCKS Compared to AT&T High Speed Access (what they call it now EDGE or GPRS something like that)All I know it's SLOWER THAN EVDO!!!! BUT who am I to say I'm just a Tech for A Wireless Company... Also I hope they release these units to Sprint or Verizon this way anyone who states that EDGE or GPRS is faster than EDVO can compair them side by side....THIS IS JUST MY TAKE ON THIS MATTER!!!!

Before you consider one of these, consider this:
1) NO upgradeable storage (besides the *Apple-authorized* mobileMe lock-in trap). No flash card slot. No USB port.
2) NO replaceable battery (still). Apple does not listen to user requests.
3) NO haptic feedback to make the keyboard more usable. Apple does not listen to user requests.
4) Itunes lock-in continues...
5) CONTROL: You can pay for one of these, but you do not really control it. Apple does. And you cannot see the source code, so you do not know what is going on. You also cannot control which carrier you have to deal with. All these decisions have been made for you so you can just do what you do best...be a good little consumer.
6) PRIVACY: This device has a number of capabilities that allow users to be tracked/monitored. Again, since you do not ultimately control the device, is this a good idea?
7) OTHER OPTIONS: Comparing this with other options such as the open-source Android platform which will allow you to control the device, to choose WHICH device you want, to add WHAT you want to the device, and which is based on open source code...I for one will wait and select an open-source-based device (Android, LiMo or the like) which does what I tell it to, and which I can customize and monitor myself. Thanks, Steve, but no thanks.

The whole keynote was wierd. They drag out the whole"new sdk" apps..wow..whoop de doo..then he just rushes into the iphone. They thoroughly went thru everything else. I was very disappointed by the iphone's presentation. I felt like it should have gotten more attention. After all this is what everybody came to see right? Then it hit me...$199....Jobs didn't want to do that. And he's not going to a)give us all those wonderful features we wished for and b)spend time on a device he had to price cut to meet his quota. if it was $600, he'd of talked about it all day. And to answer the million dollar question:why doesn't iphone have MMS?" Because Jobs wants to promote his own product. He wants you and your friend to have iphones. MMS would take away from from things like say...Mobile Me....or god forbid let the iphone communicate with a windows mobile device. Its all business, Apple has to proclaim its independence, and if that means leaving out cellphone features that have been since the turn of the century.....so be it.

Seriously, best phone out there. Can you use a Blackberry iTouch-style and sit on it's keyboard on the bus and not screw it?
About MMS and videocalls. I have them now...I DON'T use it now and MMS is free, honestly, it's only cute on the first week.
My best feature that no one mentions -> WPA2 support. Free Wi-Fi everyday on campus is sweet.

Exactly how is the Blackberry Bold going to blow the iPhone 3G out of the water? As is the case with most Apple stuff, the hardware is only 20% of the equation. The software, particularly the Apps Store stuff, is going to be out of this world. No turn by turn nav? There'll be a Garmin download. I'm quite confident that this is going to be good.

The increased data plan fees really blows. Hardware prices goes down, so should the service fee. Especially since they'll be selling millions more. And now they'll earn billions more. Gotta love the corporate racket.

Apple keeps it weak, Why didn't they enhance the camera?
If Sony, Samsung, Nokia et al, rock 3.2mega-pixels on their standard phones, surely Apple could've come in with a 5mega-pixel unit(possibly with flash)
It's near to being a deal breaker for me but having said that, if they release a 16gig Product [red] version i'll be all over it.

Too cheap.
Who wants a phone that every kid from 11 years will have (or potentially could have)..?
Apple, please give us a "pro" model and set the price to around 1000 USD.

Anyone know if they'll be reducing the cost of repairing an 8GB V1 iPhone? At $249 repair vs $199 for new one, seems like they'll need to do something.

Blackberry in Denmark has never sold. Analytics doubt the Bold with 3G is gonna change that. As for the Iphone I personally, and seriously believe, that the multi-touch system is the future. Its the only "new" way to expand the smartphone concept. Why? Because you can customize the interface and thus make the "one" device we all crave. One that has everything. Your true personal digital assistant. Not hampered by a giant keyboard with impossible small buttons. Video calls is mostly if not exclusively used by the deaf community in Denmark. Its not even featured in the commercials for the phones that can do it, or the carriers that support it. Instead they show facebook and fast music-download capability. Photosharing, browsing... This Iphone will rock, no doubt. Despite the features it might miss in some peoples eyes. - Morten

Why are so many people into the Blackberry Bold? I have the Blackberry 8830 and if the Bold is anything like the 8830 I wouldn't get it. The browsing experience on the Blackberry is horrible. I'll be getting an iPhone just for the better web browsing experience alone.

I was looking up the dimensions of this iPhone, and the previous model and I saw that they pretty much had the same dimensions. And you said it was noticeably slimmer?

The lacking of front camera is no big deal for me. Here in New Zealand we have had video calling for 3 years (3G obviously) and i jumped at the chance, The thing is nobody I know has used the vid calling more than the day they got there new phone- Its a gimmick! I love my Hacked iphone and will be waiting to see what Vodaphone offers here Before jumping.

@Ken_Darrow:
Cut and Paste. Someone sends me a link in an email or a txt and i can not click through on the link. Then i want to copy and paste that txt into Safari. I've just composed an email and want to make it a txt message instead, or vice versa. Those are two examples I personally experienced. Frustrating not to have a simple feature, even if I only use it once a month, it's simple to implement so why not?
