Seven Deadly Glasses Will Tease, Tempt You With Sinful Wine

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 11:45 PM on June 6, 2008

In vino peccatus... perhaps the saying should go like this, given the kind of hangover a bottle of wine can result in. And designer Kacper Hamilton might well agree. His Seven Deadly Glasses wine glasses are meant to physically represent each sin. So there's the phallic Pride glass, contrasting with the curly Greed glass—that hangs on to a few sips in its tentacles—and Sloth, which needs someone else to drip-feed you the good stuff. Check out the gallery to see the full range of designs: they're pretty intriguing.

Toyota Gosei Creates 360º Airbags, Plus One on the Front for Unlucky Pedestrians

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 11:15 PM on June 6, 2008

We've already seen a version of this: Autoliv's hood airbag system, but Toyota Gosei (an offshoot of, no prizes for etc etc, Toyota) has gone one better. As well as protecting the pedestrian from being squished like a bug on a windscreen, it has airbags down the side of the car, both front and back, protecting passengers from injury in the event of a nasty shunt from every which way in the car.

First Peek at Hasbro's Relaunched Millennium Falcon

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:15 PM on June 6, 2008

This, is Hasbro's new Millennium Falcon, unveiled to ExtremeTech's Brian Heater in a Manhattan hotel yesterday. The only reason the toy giant reworked it was because the original mold broke, which made us chuckle. Thirty percent larger than the original, it's got room for up to 18 action figures—and Han and Chewy (the only two characters I like) are thrown in for free. You can hear the late Sir Alec Guinness' disembodied voice Obi-wanning it, and dazzle yourself with the flashing lights, but cross your legs, Star Wars fans, because it's not out until July. There's also a whole bunch of Clone Wars merch on its way, including an AT-TE walker and some helmets, check out ExtremeTech for a video of that in action. [ExtremeTech]

Scorpion Supercar Uses Hydrogen Hybrid Engine to get 17km/litre

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:10 PM on June 6, 2008

According to Ronn Motors, the Scorpion supercar will not only achieve 0-100 kph in just 3.5 seconds, but also earns green credentials by getting 17 kilometres per litre. This trick is achieved by having a hydrogen-hybrid engine under the hood (also known as hydrogen injection, Water4Gas or HHO.) Small doses of hydrogen are generated and fed into the fuel mixture, making for a more efficient burn. Apparently this technology is a little controversial, but that hasn't stopped Ronn from putting together a bloody good looking car around that special engine, as the second photo underlines.

Western Digital Researching 20,000RPM Hard Disk to Fight Solid State Drives

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:59 PM on June 6, 2008

According to blog Bit-Tech.net, sources in the hard drive industry say that Western Digital (maker of the old world's fastest hard drive) "is working on a 20,000RPM Raptor hard drive to combat" Solid State Drives, since these are going to "be affordable in the next 12 or 18 months." The new Raptor will be a 2.5-inch drive inside a 3.5-inch custom box designed to make it "silent," since a 20,000RPM HD could probably make your ears bleed after a few minutes at fulll speed. But can a mechanical drive compete against solid state?

Zaha Hadid's Dubai Opera House Design Makes Me See Cylon Raiders

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 8:20 PM on June 6, 2008

I'm just wondering if British architect Zaha Hadid is a Battlestar Galactica fan. It seems so, as her design for the Dubai Opera House is reminiscent of those croissant-shaped fighters that zing through space, facing down Starbuck et al. The development will go up on an island in Dubai Creek, and as well as hosting an auditorium with room for 2,500 people to hear fat ladies singing, it will house an 800-seat playhouse, arts gallery, performing arts school and six-star themed hotel. HDD Plug-in Dock Gets Some Two-Slot, eSATA Action

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 7:55 PM on June 6, 2008

First there was the strangely Nintendo cartridge-like USB HDD dock, then there was the USB hub version. Now the strange external drive dock has got two slots for either 3.5- or 2.5-inch SATA drives, and also connects to your PC via eSata. There's one connection for each, mind you, so you'd better have a few slots free—though you can fall back on the USB option. Available soon for US$107.56. [GeekStuff4U via Akihabaranews]

Australian TVs To Get 10-Star Energy Ratings

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 2:53 PM on June 6, 2008

Earlier this year, Environment Minister Peter Garrett Announced that by next year we'd see energy rating labels on our gadgets. Well, the process has now begun, at least in a voluntary capacity. The government has announced the requirements and guidelines for energy ratings for televisions on their energy rating website.

The rating will be out of 10, rather than the usual six that you see on fridges and other whitegoods, with the higher the star rating the better the energy efficiency.

At the moment, the labelling is completely voluntary, so don't expect to see them on the cheap plasmas you can pick up down at JB Hifi. However, Sony, Panasonic, Philips and LG have all announced that they are planning on using the stickers to rate their TVs, and you'd expect other big names like Samsung will jump on board as well.

There's no word on whether (or when) the ratings will make their way over to other gadgets, or whether or not the labels will become compulsory in the near future. Here's hoping...

CNet AU Reviews Foxtel iQ2, Verdict: Worth the $200

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 2:04 PM on June 6, 2008

FoxtelHD front.jpg

Ty over at CNet AU got his hands on the new Foxtel iQ2 box a little bit before everybody else, and was kind enough to post his thoughts on the CNet site.

Overall, he was impressed by the new Foxtel offering, rating its performance in presenting both SD and HD channels, although the HD was where most of the love was projected, especially with the programs that offered 5.1 surround sound.

There are some advanced options in the setup menu that allow you to cater for lip-sync issues, and the On Demand service worked a treat.

It wasn't all smooth sailing - the system did lock up a few times and require hard resets, but he was playing with a pre-release version, and Ty wasn't a big fan of not knowing the start and end times of programs he was recording.

But for the most part, the HD offerings of the iQ2 were enough to convince him that the $200 installation fee was worth the money. Hit the jump for the full review, and stay tuned for Giz AU's own opinions in the coming weeks.

iPhone Lands In Australia

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 1:17 PM on June 6, 2008

iphone box.jpg

There's something in the air. It smells like iPhone fever. And the latest, most exciting piece of information is this photo of... a box. MacTalk Australia have received this image from a "very reliable source" - a box from Apple with an NDA requiring that the box isn't opened before Tuesday June 10 - which for those of you playing at home correlates to the Australian time of the WWDC.

According to MacTalk, Apple resellers all around the country will have received boxes like this one, and although they haven't yet seen the insides, the smart money is on it containing a new 3G iPhone.

The fact they've only received a single box is put down to it being a promotional unit, with retail units to ship to stores for the reported June 19 release date.

It looks pretty legit to me. And although I haven't read the NDA that applies to that particular box, here's hoping that the tape is ripped off at 12:01 next Tuesday - 3 hours before the WWDC kicks off - so we can get all this suspense rubbish out of the way.

Nikon's MyPictureTown Wants Your Photos

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 11:58 AM on June 6, 2008

picturetown.jpg

I generally use Picasa when I want to share photos with friends and family. Mostly because it offers a full gigabyte worth of space, which means I can upload full sized images for people who want to print out large copies. It's also incredibly simple for some of my less technologically-savvy family to access, which works out well for them too.

But after my recent nuptials, I'm starting to run out of space on my Picasa account. Sure, I could pay money to get more storage, or I could just check out Nikon's new MyPictureTown site, which offers a whopping 2GB worth of storage for nothing.

If This is What Prison in Brazil is Like, Arrest Me Now

Posted by Sean Fallon at 10:40 AM on June 6, 2008

Genilson Lins da Silva was arrested an thrown in prison after being sentenced to 28 years for robbery and murder. However, it appears that some of the prisons in Brazil aren't as bad as they are made out to be considering the fact that a plasma TV, refrigerator, gym equipment, two .38-calibre pistols and $173,000 in cash was recently discovered in da Silva's cell. The items were uncovered during a raid that was part of a statewide crackdown on drug trafficking, and they are now investigating how he managed to live the high life while being incarcerated. Broadcom Exec Accused of Spiking Tech CEO's Drinks, Has More Blow Than Scarface

Posted by Adrian Covert at 10:15 AM on June 6, 2008

Henry Nicholas, co-founder of integrated circuits manufacturer Broadcom, has just been charged with spiking the drinks of other technology execs and maintaining a warehouse full of coke, meth and ecstasy. This is the latest incident for Nicholas, who in July 2007, was accused of constructing a sex cave so he could roll hard on ecstasy and properly love his prostitutes. In addition, Nicholas, along with co-founder Henry Samueli and CFO William Ruehle were charged last month on multiple counts of conspiracy, options backdating, falsifying reported income and securities fraud (BORING!). And call me a dreamer, but I'm still waiting for allegations involving a midget to work their way into this equation. Checkout Valleywag for the full indictment document.[NYT]

Two Bravia TV Modules That Make Sense: Wireless HDMI and Slot-Loading DVD Player

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 9:52 AM on June 6, 2008

Sure the Bravia Internet Video Link is a dubious use of US$300 (even with YouTube), but there are at least two Bravia add-on modules in Sony's oven that are tasty and smart: A wireless HDMI module--neato factor is self-explanatory, especially since the transmitter takes up to four HDMI connections--and a slot loading DVD player. It sounds weird to say, but having a hidden DVD player on the side of a flat panel TV is actually nice, plus it's integrates with the cross media bar (XMB). Only downside is that they both need external power. Check 'em out up close.

IBM Developing Water-cooled, '3D' Semiconductors

Posted by Adrian Covert at 9:46 AM on June 6, 2008

Straight out of IBM's Zurich R&D labs are these concepts for semiconductor chips that are stacked on top of eachother and allow enough space in between for water cooling. Developed jointly with the Fraunhofer Institute in Berlin, the '3D' stacking of these chips not only uses less space and allows for greater speed, but the water cooling technique could potentially take the generated heat and reuse it for other purposes. IBM says the water cooling structure is as thin as 50 microns and equal in complexity to the system of nerves and blood vessels in the human brain. Crazy stuff.[IBM via TG Daily via Engadget]
