Electricity Generator Gets Its Power From Waste Heat

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:00 AM on June 1, 2008

Dallas' Southern Methodist University is now recycling energy with one of the first commercial electricity generators that use thermoelectricity—the act of drawing power from waste heat. The machine operates by using heat given off by other processes (such as manufacturing) to boil liquids, which then turn into steam, which then turns an electricity-generating turbine.

Steampunk Tea Pots Are Very Rust-Tea

Posted by Jason Chen at 8:00 AM on June 1, 2008

Apologies to reader Miguel for taking his fantastic creations and shoving a lousy pun on it, but it was either that or "sTEAmpunk". These Steampunk Tea Pots are really, really amazing, and they're all hand-made and unglazed coloured clay pots perfect for putting your morning tea into. Mr. T would approve.

Dealzmodo: 5% Off Anything at Amazon.com

Posted by Jason Chen at 7:00 AM on June 1, 2008

Lockergnome has somewhat convoluted way to game the Amazon system to get an extra 5% off of anything in the store, as long as it's actually sold by Amazon.com and not a third-party retailer. It's too long to list here, but the gist of it is that you tell Amazon you already own something, wait a day, and they'll recommend that item back to you at a 5% discount. Not sure how this makes sense, but Lockergnome says it works. Go check it out, cheapos. [Lockergnome]

College Student Makes Multi-touch Table Out Of Cardboard Box

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 6:00 AM on June 1, 2008

Microsoft's Surface multi-touch table sure is cool, but who has US$10,000 to spend on a gadget like that? I personally have maybe fifty bucks to my name right now, so I guess I'll have to fulfil my multi-touch itch with a cardboard box and a webcam like this guy.

Motorola + Kodak's 5-Megapixel Cameraphone Leaked Shots

Posted by Jason Chen at 3:00 AM on June 1, 2008

We've been hearing about a 5-megapixel cameraphone from Motorola and Kodak for more than a year now, but we've only recently seen leaked photos of the actual device. Boy Genius says it's running on Motorola's MOTOMAGX Linux platform and has Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 100MB internal storage and a ROKR touch wheel. The problems? The camera isn't autofocus (ruh roh), and there's only EDGE. Someone's going to have some good times uploading blurry pictures over a slow connection when this is released. [Boy Genius]

LEGO Battlestar Galactica Cylon Minifig Beats Star Wars Minifig Any Day

Posted by Jason Chen at 2:29 AM on June 1, 2008

Sorry Jesus. The Star Wars Minifig may be nice, but it's got nothing on this Battlestar Galactica Cylon LEGO minifig. Its eyes light up (just like yours) but has that glowing red dot flash back and forth like in the show. Yes, the light moves. We have it on video. THIS is the best use of light-emitting diodes sir. Good day!

Pantech Duo 2 Dual-Sliding Windows Mobile Phone Leaked on FCC

Posted by Jason Chen at 2:00 AM on June 1, 2008

Seeing as the original AT&T Pantech Duo 1 is the C810, this C820 has a really high possibility of being the Pantech Duo 2. There aren't many details, but it's got WCDMA 850/1900, which is AT&T's 3G, and probably will run Windows Mobile like the previous ones. It's interesting to check out the differences between this and the Ocean 2, which also popped up on the FCC a few weeks back if you're into looking at FCC drawings. [FCC]

Son Gets Steampunk Clock As Wedding Present From Dad

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 12:00 AM on June 1, 2008

In a story sure to melt the gears in our brass-and-copper hearts, one steampunk fan toiled for weeks in his workshop in order to present his son with an intricate walnut clock as a wedding present. The best thing is, the son had been the one to introduce him to steampunk in the first place. The dad-humour in the note that came with the present puts an "aw shucks" smile on my face.
