Zune Hits 2 Million Sales, Drinks Creative's Milkshake
Posted by Jason Chen at 7:10 AM on May 13, 2008
Industry numbers group NPD has just confirmed that Microsoft's Zune's sold 2 million units, just slightly under one year after it sold its first million. Where is Microsoft getting the marketshare for the extra million? Mostly from Creative, who dropped from 4% marketshare to 2% from Q1 '07 to Q1 '08. Apple's also gone down from 72% to 71%, so there might be some defectors in the fruit squad as well. Total marketshare for Microsoft now stands at a decent 4%. [PMP Today via Tech Digest]

Zune is the new Mac. How exciting.
Microsoft could dramatically change their market-share if they could sign a license agreement to use iTunes. Sure, Apple would never agree to it (since that is the reason people buy the iPod), but it would finally make this comparison software-neutral. Until then, Microsoft can enjoy their single-digit market share.

Wow so the sold more when they just had one model available??? i remember a few month's back someone telling me that zune sales where up 300%, lol. I don't have nothing against the zune but i think with so many iPod alternatives out there microsoft should just stick with software

Marketshares dont really tell you anything, how many people have more than one mp3 player I certainly do and i bet there are lots of others aswell
Whos to say there arent some people that have both a zune and an ipod or a zune and a creative mp3 player and both are operating or both can operate
Also how many ipod classics or ipod nanos did Apple sell during the same time

There is a German saying:
Slowly and arduously, the squirrel feeds.
With about 2% growth per year, Microsoft will overtake Apple in mp3 player sales sometime around 2030 or so, assuming a linear progression.
Sorry, but I suppose by that time, kids won't even know what an mp3 is...

@Mayor McRib: I think that is not POS sales but sales to the retailer. Microsoft pays to have Best Buy hold them in the back. One day Zunes will be the only source of energy, people will burn them for warmth and throw them at threatening forces.

Apple sold about 52 million iPods worldwide in the last four quarters. However, we don't know:
1) How many were sold in the US only - the Zune is only sold in the US.
2) What the model split was (i.e. Touch, Classic, Nano, Shuffle). The Zune compares to the Classic.
So... uh... yeah. Apple still tanking MS but we don't know by how much.
Although it'll be a lot. Oh yes.

I haven't ever seen anyone on the wireless, but after taking a glance at the most-played tracks on the Zune social, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Seriously, Timbaland, Linkin Park, and Flo Rida? Let's hear it for Liz Phair, Lisa Gerrard, and Nellie McKay instead.
My Z80 does what I want, and doesn't come with that annoying iPod interface, so I don't regret buying the thing.

Zune is nothing but a product born of arrogance. MS states they will stick with this product no matter how long it takes to win. What sane company would continue to produce a money losing product for the sole purpose of winning a market and destroying your duped partners? How can a company justify losing profits on a product that doesn't sell and has made pathetic progress today and in the future and vows to continue the pattern? Just like the name of the company the same letter starts with "M".

Cripes it's an MP3 player people, not a personal attack. Some prefer the Zune, some prefer ipods, some Creative, etc, etc, etc. If Giz puts up a positive post about the Zune, the M$ haters have to tear it apart, if the post about the iphone they're fanboys (they kinda are, but no big deal). Buy what you like and use it, just because someone prefers something else doesn't make them stupid or a fanboy (at least not all the time).
P.S. - Zune rules, ipod drools! LOL!

I've got a Zune, as does my dad, and for pretty much one reason. The all-you-can-download model of sales works great, and the fact that you can have more than one zune on the program. I think the number is 4 zunes per account, but i could be wrong. He gets to download all the music he wants, as do I.
Sure, I'm only renting it, but if something else comes along that's better, I've no brand "loyality" I don't HAVE to buy a Zune or lose all of my music. It's rented.

I would actually buy a Zune over an iPod, since from my brief testing I definitely preferred its interface, look and feel. But it's not recognized as a USB drive by default, meaning I can't use the extra space as external backup, which is a dealbreaker for me. Hint to MS: Allow this functionality! I know plenty of people who do this sort of thing besides myself, and it's perceived as an added value.
