Yamaha's Disklavier Mark IV V 3.0 is the Most Gadgety Piano Yet
Posted by Jason Chen at 2:00 AM on May 29, 2008
This Yamaha Disklavier Piano could be the most advanced piano we've ever seen, and we've seen several (forced piano lessons FTW). Not only does it have Wi-Fi to download MIDI files onto itself so it can play back songs, you can record performances—with vocals and other instruments—as well.
Files are stored onto the piano's hard drive and can be transferred via USB to a PC, and then easily burned onto a CD for in-car listening. Plus, if you hook up the piano to a TV, you can display lyrics and graphics for a song on it. The best part? You can stream songs from the internet and have the piano play it by itself, depressing the keys and pedals at the right time, fooling your parents into thinking you've learned the song when you've actually spent the time playing your NES! Win! [Yamaha]

@frigg: "Reproducing piano" = Amish Disklavier, is it not so, my Mennonite friend?

We have a Mark III and let me tell you it is awesome. It doesn't do wifi but I do have it connected to a G5 in my library and send files over cat5 to a midi mod.
I wish Yamaha had an app that would allow me to stream Internet midi through my cpu straight to the piano.
BTW, the Mark III was over $58k so I'm sure the Mark IV is really crazy expensive.

"Reproducing pianos" in the early 20th century were arguably more advanced, with over 20,000 parts in some, including pneumatic devices cannibalized from aircraft simulators built for military purposes... thoroughly steampunk, before steampunk was "steampunk."

I played one of these. Once I stuck Rachmoninov's 3rd Piano Concerto in D minor on it. Played it great. DO want...

@aussie: Isn't a piano a gadget by itself?

@ps61318: Actually, I would totally agree! Especially considering the kind of old-world materials used to keep those instruments running, from animal fats used as lubricant for moving parts, to all the handmade woodwork.

@frigg: It really is amazing what we consider progress sometimes, no? I think it's why I enjoy reading the mechanical watch articles here, too - sheer engineering artistry. Can't be beat with solid state stuff.

This piano craps on our little Clavinova 407 (which rocks BTW), but those Disklaviers are fucking expensive.
