Yamaha Branded Deus Ex Machina Motorcycle Exoskeleton: A Segway On Steroids
Posted by Sean Fallon at 8:20 AM on May 23, 2008
Art Centre Pasadena student Jake Loniak has taken everything that is cool about exoskeletons and motorcycles and crammed it into this Yamaha-branded Deus Ex Machina concept motorcycle. The vehicle is powered by ultra-capacitors and doped nano-phoshpate batteries (similar to the ones currently used in hybrid cars) and it is controlled using 36 pneumatic muscles with 2 linear actuators set along a spine consisting of seven artificial vertebrae. Even the helmet is pneumatically attached.

If constructed, the designer believes that it could achieve a top speed of 120 kph (0-100kph in 3 seconds) with a recharge time of 15 minutes and cycle time of 1 hour. We may never know if that is true, but I say throw some sort of storage compartment on this thing and let's find out. [Art Centre Pasadena via Hell For Leather]

yes, it's coool, yes, it's neat, yes, it looks exciting, dangerous, unreal. a whole lot of things. Do you remember the nervy feeling you got 1st time you rolled the throttle all the way? how fast was that? do you remember, or does it matter? bug on the face plate the size of a quarter. 135, 147, 160 >>>>. fear, stupidity, adrenaline, freedom, the sound of the engine burning your ears. cars wizzing by like sign posts...geeze i hope there aren't any cops watching. but when was the last time you saw something that actually inspired you to love it or hate it? made you think? feel? that excitement of waiting in line to see that movie everyone is talking about, "Starwars". Did you feel it when you were watching Rob D. Jr. put his hand into the graphic of the arm of the suit. or when they put all the little sequences together and you saw the Ironman suit flying? were you humming the tune to speed racer...10 years old up at 6am, before school to watch speed racer and far star blazers.... my brother put his love of freedom and bikes into a "wait in line for the 'E' ticket ride", "hurry up i'm next", "no, me first", "gotta be the coolest thing", "go out with the girlfriend or go riding, hmmm?" "not like everybody elses (anybody elses)bike design" bike design. he purposefully designed it with reality in mind. off the shelf tech with real world applications. real world limitations, not a fantasy top speed, extra ordinary range. reality. this is the basic, engineered and designed to be make-able. but dont, for one instant, think that jake doens't have a sketch with jets and armor scribbled on top. just way till you see the turbo powered, fuel injected, jet propelled, rocket assisted, carbon fiber ceramat wrapped, road eater, with fold away wings! made ya think. now smile for the camera.

In reading a few comments it looks like not everyone clicked through the small thumbnails. This electric bike/voltron suit would articulate forward, placing the two wheels far ahead of the third, for high speed action. My only question in seeing it in that form is how comfortable the strap-in process would be having the driver's weight against the restraints during high speed travel.

@Step666: Screw the comfort. travelling in excess of 100mph inches from the pavement and navigating with real time motion response is not meant to be like chillin in a lazyboy. You can go with whatever comfy wheelchair model they have out at the time.
PS: nothing built for high perfomance is meant to accomodate your softer side.
@Walter: I had an idea of what it meant, but thatnks for clearning that up...and adding a backstory.
@Lupison: this is an exoskeloton. If you are in an accident, you WANT to be inside this thing. Twisting and bouncing down the highway is much worse then just getting knocked around in this thing which it keeps your neck and spinal colomn relatively straight.

I hope you don't get an itch while you are driving it. I can see that being really claustrophobic if you can't move around your feet or hands any.
Other than that I think it looks like a seriously sweet concept. I want to see more future-like vehicals and hopefully a hover skateboard ready for 2010.

At first, I misunderstood the orientation and scale of the vehicle, thinking the rider was supposed to stand between the two adjacent (as in a Segway Personal Transporter) wheels facing toward the third wheel and that strange little built-in helmet, which made me think Jake Loniak had somehow finally solved the personal transportation industry's greatest problem since the invention of the automobile: how to safely combine driving with oral sex.

The bodysuit "assistance" has so much potential in its applications... can't wait to see where this one goes. In the future, rear-ending, tipovers, etc. will be obsolete! Consider the applications of this concept... not everybody can walk around to not need this sort of transportation, whatever the gravity may be. It also looks so fun. I will take mine in ice white with piano black and carbon accents please.

this is my brothers design, his background before entering artcenter is 5 years aviation electronics and jet engine mechanics, USMC, 8 years as a senior valve assembler for a company making multi-million dollar valves for refineries and nuclear power plants, co-founder of our own high precision CNC machine shop, where he worked 3 years, welder, CAD programmer, machinist, engineer, artist and designer. his motorcycle of choice is ducati, and his monster S4 is currently in garaged while he finishes his degree. his designs are based on practical engineering principles, we plan on building several of his designs. engineering drawings exist for the titanium tube frame and several of the components. most of the other components are available off shelf. the air muscles are an off the shelf item from a swiss company. the motors are in the wheels. the batteries currently exist. the machine dives forward as it accelerates and it has a function where the arm reclines to the rear so you are sitting down like normal for driving around. it stands up to park and store. you should see the other engineering drawings and renderings. i'll ask my brother to post them. he was pleased to see his design getting feedback on the www we plan to pursue production on some really cool things, we will make most of the components ourselves and do assembly in house. if anyone seriously thinks this something they want to see become reality, and they have the ability to back it up with more than words. contact artcenter, passedena. everyone knows jake. i would give out his email but i want to appear serious and legit, going thru artcenter will prove jake is real. when jake gave his presentation to his teachers, fellow students and guests. they were blown away. and he got a "A" way to go jake your older brother, dr

With all the garbage that is coming out these days, we are hardly advancing into the future. Cheers to the designer and his ability to actually tap into what the future may hold for us. SUPERB.

I'm sorry, but unless you are using this to rover around Mars because the gravity is so much stronger and its hard to walk, Segways are such a turnoff. And the fact that this is all tricked out makes it even worse.

this would be awesome on LSD, skimming around all wraith-like. back when i was a teen and into such things, my favorite thing to do was the 'bicycle centaur' wherein you stand up on the pedals of a moving bike, and rest the fronts of your thighs against the handlebars, and just cruise like that. if you do it right, you can't see the bike at all, because you're leaned forward too much.

It looks like it's rear-wheel drive. So it's looks like Migo's concern is valid. So, serious limitations on acceleration. Also, it looks like it breaks with the front wheels. So I'm concerned that breaking too fast could cause it to tip forward. This is especially scary, because guess what's the first thing to hit the ground if it tips forward (hope it's a strong helmet).
