XYZ Computer Desk Is the Computer Itself (Verdict: I Want One)
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:23 PM on May 23, 2008
Taking the top out of desktop, the XYZ Computer Desk is actually the computer itself, a PC table made of chromed legs and some kind of polycarbonate top, with ports and optical drive on the side, and plenty of room for expansion and clutter. And while the screen is too small for me, it is oh-so-pretty that I want to build it, even if it goes against my religion. [BornRich]

So it's like a chin-less iMac? With free table attached? This baby had better be amazingly expandable to warrant me thinking of opening my wallet.
And what about the safety precautions? How does heat dissipate from the processor under load? Will this table get hot to the touch (Where should I avoid leaving my CD/DVD blanks)? Is this a table where I can't leave my magnetic toys lying on for fear of wiping it? I only presume that you have to clear half the desk to upgrade a component, but admittedly that is not so bad.
What about static electricity (or going live) if the power supply severely breaks? The ports seem to all be out of sight (and reach). I am very sceptical about the practicality of this design.
I'm sure this will find a market. Maybe I'm just too peripheral-focussed. Most things I find can be done with a USB or Firewire peripheral. I suppose we'll just have to see what happens.

6 Months later your desk will be out of date... I'll pass on this one, cool but sorry computers become slow fast.

The thing looks like a thumb drive with legs.

@Kaiser-Machead: Makes sense that it would have a theft-prevention feature. Because if I broke into your place, you better believe that would be the first thing I would grab...

I like the idea of a project like this; a DIY computer tied to a pegboard under the desk or something. Cuts down on cooling issues, redefines Plug&Play. Might need some plastic guard rails to prevent knee singes... don't know about you, but the smell of burning leg hair in the morning does not smell, to me, like victory.

Pretty cool, but I agree that the monitor is too small. I'd go the monitor arm route with a larger screen, and make a portion of the desktop itself a giant touch screen. (Ya know, since we're dreaming about actually making one and all that.)

Why the center seam? I want seamless! I also don't understand why it's so thick. A forward-looking product like this should be thinner. It should have USB ports down one side, too. Overall, awesome concept, I love it.

Back in the 80s, a company I worked for had a Wang PC (heh, I said "wang") that, while it wasn't actually built in to a desk, had it's monitor and keyboard mounted to a desk. The Wang came with a swing-arm mount for the monitor. They were popular word processing machines at the time. They ran MS-DOS, but were not completely IBM PC compatible.

I wouldn't market this as a computer, but rather as a computer case. A very expensive case, of course, but it would do wonders for cable management.

I had this idea years ago, the trick would be to mount the system so the components could be removed and replaced with ease. I think a glass top over everything would be pretty sweet too.

@liveinvt: It is better because some people think they would like to bring the whole table to the maintenance department to be fixed. These designers are genius! (NOT)

@kmpu-tah: It'd be sort of cool if it had a slide-out chassis that you can just send in, keeping your polycarbonate desk where it is. It would have to be like that anyway, since desks inevitably accumulate lots of junk you don't want to have to find a new space for.

I worded that wrong- you would have to work without a computer AND A DESK?

Is that a Kensington security slot I see there? If so, that's funny, cuz it means you need another piece of furniture to tether it to. Why did I get rid of my stripper pole??

@Thud: Ah, yes, the traditional, ages-old battle of "integrated" vs. "component". This is pervasive in every industry where it is possible.
The answer of course is "component." Why? Because I said so. And I'm the dad, so I get to make that decision.

My current set up is better--its modular. I've put all the CPU bits/memory/drives into a standalone unit and the furniture bits into another. That way I can upgrade things without replacing everything. Move stuff around. Each is optimized for its particular function. I call the box for the CPU stuff a "computer" and the furniture unit a "desk."
Seriously, am I the only one who likes standalone tech? Seems like the goal of integrating everything into a single phone/PDA/MP3/camera/desk means each element is compromised in some way...

It's no different from any other form of animal husbandry. Left to their own devices, computers will mate with just any old desk they can mount.

I designed a desk-comp once for myself; the problem is, with design you need to think about expandability and future proofing your materials. The innards need be pulled and replaced with... you know Newer, Faster, Better. It is a great Idea, I like the portable look of this design, yet what do you do when it's too old (in 6 months) get a new one? I hardly think that would be very green how would you connect the monitor so nicely setting on the surface? a myriad of issues come to light once you actually take it out of concept towards reality.

wouldn't putting an iMac on a silver desk give you about the same look?
except in 5 years when your imac is out of date you dont have to replace the whole desk.

Well this is good. Other PC/desk chimeras seem to have suffered from a lack of desktop real estate and/or sturdiness that this particular product does not exhibit.

With that kind of surface area you could make the entire underside a big, passive heat sink to keep the thing cool silently!
