Xentex Laptop Folds Up to Spite UMPCs and Contortionists
Posted by Mark Wilson at 1:20 AM on May 24, 2008
If you'd rather pack a rare conversation piece than a mobile powerhouse to impress the fellow Starbuckians, you'll do no better than with this Xentex laptop prototype. While most laptops simply open and close, this Xentex can fold twice for portability.
The system features two 13.3" screens that can independently swivel for the benefit of friends/colleagues across the table. Together, they combine to measure 19.5" across and offer a massive display.
Internally, the system only boasts an 850MHz Athlon processor and 128MB of memory. That's not exactly Vista-ready, but you'll be too busy folding and unfolding the system to care, attempting to make a crane, dinosaur or some other origami masterpiece. This Xentex laptop is currently offered for sale on eBay for under US$300. [eBay via Register Hardware]

@DisposableInterloper: yeah I remember seeing this intriguing beast in a magazine some years back too.
I can't help but wonder with a number of other readers here: how backwards are we into the future here?

I had this computer in '98 and it served me really well.

I distinctly remember some magazine raving about this weird laptop some years ago. I think it was Computer Shopper.
As much as I hate the design looking at it now, I can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of nostalgia for the late 90's and early 2000's.

@Collins1:
I have a crappy old Acernote 120MHz system from about then. It makes this thing look like a tank.
Portables before "laptops" were behemoths. This looks about as chunky as my old 386.

I think you're all forgetting 2 things:
- It's 2008
- Laptops in the 90's where behemoths
If any of you think this looks like it's from 1998, go look at a picture of a 10 year old laptop and feel stupid.

Ouch... I wouldn't pay over $100 for that thing, and I have an OLPC XO-1 with an even slower processor. Actually, I wouldn't take one if it were given to me. That split screen is just bad.
@SonOfMagicFact:
The article calls it a prototype. Popsci is so bad for waiting for things like that though... I think I must have read about DLP TVs in... about 1990-91? They promised wall-sized images with the sharpness of a magazine print. Well, I guess it's doable in theory.

Oh my goodness. I remember seeing this in Popular Science around 1999, and realizing how much I wanted it. I never knew that they actually went through with producing it. Very cool!

yeah, a 19.5 inch screen isn't all that useful with a big effin' line running down the middle, but it could be used to run windows XP on one screen and virtualize Ubuntu on the other, then you could be ultra geeky. "Pffft dual booting is so last clock cycle, now it's about booting both os's at the same time!"

Why fold it down the center that way? Look at all that wasted space below the keyboard.
They should have made it a trifold that folds horizontally.
1) Small wide screen
2) Small wide screen
3) Keyboard

@justinpe: Wow, sanity.
According to the pics from the eBay auctino, the bios was compiled in 2001, so I'd guess that this is from '01-'02.

Floppy drive, no optical, and an Athlon core procy? Not even a Barton? Not even a THOROUGHBRED?! By this to play your old 386 I.F. games and old Lucas adventure classics.

I had something like this once. Oh, wait. It was a piece of paper. I would write notes on it and then fold it up and put it in my pocket.
You want to turn heads at starbucks? Try writing with A PEN AND PIECE OF PAPER! Its like a steampunked version of the airbook. Chicks will fall all over you...
"Wow. I haven't seen anyone do that in... well I dont remember."
"Yeah, its a little something I learned while traveling in Europe."
"Wow. Europe. I've seen that on Google Earth. Cool. Whats it called?"
"Oh, this? Its called "writing". But in Europe they call it "scrivere"."
"Do you want to go to the bathroom with me"
The rest is history...
