Wireless Pong Between Multiple iPhones, iPod Touch
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 11:45 PM on May 30, 2008
This has to be the coolest implementation of Pong ever: load the iPong application in two or three iPod touch units or iPhones, and start playing between them using your finger, with the ball actually passing from one screen to the other depending on the ball angle.
The software was made by Mr. Kondo—a colleague of Ryo Shimizu, CEO of Ubiquitous Entertainment—in an hour. We don't know if it will make its way to the iTunes store as a commercial product, but I hope it inspires other developers to use this kind of competitive—or collaborative—gameplay. it wou;d be redicoulous if the iphone v2 had a ir blaster on it, then you could use it as a tv remote, then it would be a device that you could use for anything!

@Navin R Johnson: Over site? Apple flew over whaaa?
I'm certain that the iPod touch will not be getting a GPS chip. I could be wrong in the end, but I just don't see it happening.

@Chester_Copperpot: Uhm, how is it going to kill Garmin and Tom Tom without a friggin GPS chip? Biggest over site EVER on Apple's part.
GPS chips are so cheap and small. I hope iphone V2 and itouch V2 remedy this.

Cool, but it looks like the ball always goes to the next screen in the pattern (in this case, counter-clockwise), regardless of the angle of the ball. It'd be cool if they could truly determine which screen to go to based on the angle.

Man, I never even thought of that. The iPhone is going to be such a part of our lives forever it's incredible. From being universal remote controls to killing TomTom and Garmin Apple has created a winner.

Very cool tech. It would've been more interesting if one of these guys actually missed the ball once in a while. Also like the "bong" sound effect they felt they needed to add.

I remember when the first Pong came out, pre video game systems, etc, it was a hand held unit (and none of that cool slider bar tech) and THAT was the coolest Pong ever, since there was nothing out at that time even remotely like it. It was even before Pac-man and Space Invaders and computers where these HUGE room sized deals with gigantic tapes.
You've come a long way baby. Whats old has become new again.

All you motherfuckers are gonna pay. You are the ones who are the ball-lickers. We're gonna fuck your mothers while you watch and cry like little bitches. Once we get to Hollywood and find those Miramax fucks who are making that movie, we're gonna make 'em eat our shit, then shit out our shit, then eat their shit which is made up of our shit that we made 'em eat. Then you're all you motherfucks are next. Love, Jay and Silent Bob. *BONG*

@takemetoyourtoaster: You can make a touch screen application for the TV buttons and then mod a RF transmitter on the bottom where the dock connector is. *BONG* TV remote. Apples API allows you to talk to the dock connector. Theoretically, you could even add GPS modules to the older versions of the iPhone/iPod Touch that would just clip onto the bottom of the device.

@kylenalepa: Yup, you got it. It's turn-based, not position-based. It doesn't depend on the ball angle or the positions of the iPods. I don't even know how you'd do that. You'd need GPS as well as accelerometer data.

Pender
Posted 12:59 AM 31/5/08
@j0hnnyb: How would you do that? You'd assume the players are holding their phones in a triangle and in clockwise order of the players. When you were setting up the game, you'd display the corner of a triangle on each player's screen and instruct them to orient the iphones so that the pictures join together to make a single large triangle.

@Curves:
I had an Atari 1600 (or mabey 2600) when I was a kid. Played pong, tank commander, pitfall, etc. Ah the classics. Seems these days the ultimate geek thing to do to a powerful piece of tech is to play pong or doom on it.

@Sora57: To the best of my recollection (which may have been altered at the time due to the fact that we wore roach clips as jewelry), the first Pong that I ever saw was a small hand held unit about 6"x8" with 3 red buttons down each of the sides. Arcades at the time had the old style pin-ball machines and nothing was really a video game yet. I looked on line and cant find a pic of it, though I did see some Pongs that are WAY older than I imagined, so apparently the one I had was not the first.
Now I am going to get out my mood ring and platform shoes and head for the Disco. Keep on Truckin...

Well, part of the reason I believe this is the fact that the iPod touch doesn't even have frackin' volume buttons like the iPhone.
Seriously. WTF.

@Navin R Johnson: There are no GPS chips because most mac/iPhone users "want to believe" and "trust no one". If Fox Mulder had a GPS in his phone he would instantly EMP it... Am I right?

I've been playing with some of the games (in beta) for my zune80, and there is a version of pong that sends a ball between two zunes. No touch screen, but pretty cool anyway.
Good to see some game dev for iPod users too.
