Windows 7 Multi-Touch SDK Slated For an October Release
Posted by Sean Fallon at 4:30 AM on May 30, 2008
Details on the multi-touch functionality in Windows 7 are only a couple of days old, but it appears that Microsoft is already looking ahead with a multi-touch SDK slated for release at this year's Professional Developers Conference in October. At that time, Microsoft is expected to "highlight the new multi-touch gesture APIs and explain how you can leverage them in your applications." [PDC via tabletpctalk]

So how many more Gigabytes of memory do we need for this? Vista doesn't set a very good track record, and the gap between what was promised for Longhorn and what ended up in Vista is very large.

Multi-touch? I say BOOOOO! With two hands on the screen, the other things that I touch when I'm online could get lonely.

Get ready for 4-5 years of multitouch as a weird "bonus" feature in software that doesn't really add any value.
The day Windows 7 comes out will not be the day that everyone gets multitouch capabilities. It'll probably be the day that some apps let you perform some commands with multitouch, most likely rotating and resizing objects that can be rotated or resized via other means.
This is only the first step in the process. We'll still need software developers to figure out how to use it well, and hardware manufacturers to create nice multitouch devices, and of course, users who buy the devices. And most people aren't going to buy one before 7 comes out.
So... we'll see what the rest of the landscape (namely Apple) has done with the tech in 2010.

@twilight-arc: I think a lot of consumers are going to be a bit gun shy about Windows 7 considering Vista's slow adaptation. I am thinking Windows 7 will be a little bit closer to what Longhorn was originally slated to be, a cleaner, richer, more compact OS. Then again I am a die-hard Cubs fan so hope for 'next year' is a common theme. (don't look now but they are 1st in ESPN's Power Ranking!)
@itscarmennnn: Off topic, but if you dig MIA check out Santogold if you haven't already. I just got the album last week and it's wonderful.
