What Would You Like Giz to Explain?
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 4:00 AM on May 8, 2008
Every week, Giz Explains breaks down sticky, chewy tech into easy-to-swallow bits, like a mama bird eating stuff and puking it back into her babies' mouths, already digested. We've covered stuff like scary plasma TVs and the image sensors in your digital camera. But what would you like us to explain? If there's something you'd like the quick, essential CliffsNotes on, send an email to tips@gizmodo.com with "Giz Explains" line. We won't tell your friends you asked, honest. [Giz Explains]

@Denver_80203:
Not quite
folding@home is an experiment in a sort of "cloud computing"
The PS3 has a very fast computer processor in it.
The people at folding@home ask people to allow their PS3's processor to be used when they are not using the system
The combined power of all these PS3 systems adds up to a massive supercomputer
The folding@home people use this "supercomputer" for potentially life saving disease research that requires tons of processing power.

@geedots: "Can you please explain to me why I have a college degree and yet still can't find a job in the Bay Area that pays enough to live without dumpster-diving?"
Wrong degree maybe?
"Or why entry-level jobs require 1-3 years of experience? "
They expect you to have interned during your summers in college which would cover the 1-3 years experience. Best to get 'something' in your field for a while until you at least have a year experience. I couldn't internet either so when I got out of college i had to accept a job in my field for $13/hr. By the end of the year I was more hireable and tripled my salary my moving companies.

The torch requires intense electrolysis to break the hydrogen and oxygen bonds, so it's a net loss by quite a bit. It's interaction with metals and non-interaction with flesh is interesting though, and probably worth investigating.
All the magnet motors you see suffer from degaussing, so you're simply harvesting the magnets power until it's no longer magnetic.

What's with all this cheap power I hear about that independent inventors are coming up with? Like modifications to cars to run purely off water, or new progresses in electromagnetics. Some of these "inventions" have been shown off (working) on different news stations, but why haven't I heard of any car manufacturers or anyone really pushing this stuff. Does it not work? Is it because there isn't really any money in extremely efficient low cost power alternatives, and they haven't been adopted due to greed?
This was a while ago even, but I saw a guy who had modded a gas torch to run off water instead, and he had also modded his car to run off water - and it was extremely efficient.
Is this stuff fake? Have I been duped? I don't think I have, but feel free to inform me.

@Rabid Penguin: Always ask yourself where the energy is coming from. Many 'alternative fuels' are really just energy storage/delivery methods and do not produce any energy (like fuel cells). This is beneficial because it is an effecient way to convert and store electrical power from any number of source fuels (hydro, wind, nuclear, coal), but the energy still has to come from somewhere. The problem is that none of these fuel sources compare economically to gas yet.

Evaluating your life from the position of someone who knows nothing about you: 1) you don't have serious financial or other obligations hanging over your head (you live with your parents, right?), 2) you're not too old to pursue any career you like from scratch with the exception of professional figure skater which requires an earlier commitment, 3) with the exception of dissing Kurzzie, you've said nothing to lead me to believe you couldn't get a programming degree if that's what you want. @nutbastard: "star commenters are editor-selected, for example, lindsayjoy has hardly any posts at all, and not many followers."
Editors have very little to do with it. As aging commenters die or leave the site, a congress of cardinals (birds, not baseball players, or members of a sacred religious order) cast ballots in a secluded room. If the birds are not able to reach agreement, a powder is mixed with the ballots, which are burned, creating a black smoke indicating the status quo. However, in the event that the birds agree to honor another commenter with a coveted star, the ballots are burned in their natural state creating white smoke signaling the joyous decision for all to witness. Considering the event is handled entirely by birds, many believe the process to be divinely-inspired, and not just because birds are religious symbols and all, but mainly because they're birds.

so you're going to have to find some unused archetype to fill... cranky, nay-saying old man is still available, as is the Confucius persona.

You bastard. You are mean. I know why.
I am not the only star commenter with not many followers.
For example, Geisrud, who has one more follower then I do, also has a star.
I will give you the official answer over e-mail.
And I still love you -- you Bastard.

Because my computer has 4gb of ram, a radeon 3870 video card, and a intel c2d e2180 processor @2.00 gb. What I want to know, is why does my computer choke when I am doing resource intensive things? For instance, the other day, I was running 2 firefox windows with about 8 tabs in each, I was running Adobe Lightroom, I was running an AVG antivirus scan, and I tried to load Team Fortress 2, and it took way longer than it usually does. In addition to this, Lightroom was acting groggy, when it used to be fast. Why do you guys think this is? what is the bottleneck? definitely not the ram, or the video card, could it be the processor or is it the hard drive? hd is a barracuda 7200.10 250 gb drive

I meant that Ray Kurzweil is fucking nuts in the most endearing way possible.
My top 5 idols goes something like:
1) Bowie/Tesla (or even Bowie AS Tesla)
2) Kurzweil
3) Hawking
4) Lt. Columbo
But aside from that, I don't see why I couldn't just mooch knowledge off my friend who's in school for EET and do some small programs and projects on the side. I know C/C++ and I've been working on Obj-C, he can teach me Java and C#.
But I have a good amount of debt (not all of it is technically mine, she robbed me and ruined my powerbook) and even with moving back to my parents, I cant afford to move out again or go to school full time. It has to be part time school and full time work. Even lower ranked law schools (I did OK on my LSATs and my GPA was just over a 3.2, I'm realistic but I also don't buy into the elitism that if the school isn't top 40 that you aren't getting a job I will gladly take a public sector job in the mid $40s to start) are in the $15-20k a semester range. So I need to continue my 6 and 7 day work weeks until I have enough saved up. Gadget purchases have suffered dramatically and I think its best that "I want" rather than "I get". Also the internet is wayyyyyy cheaper than real counseling.

@nutbastard: I dunno if it's quite as regimented as all that. I think that maybe you just have to really be contributing something to the conversation in the majority of your posts. Of course, it's all idle speculation, anyway. Besides, did The Sneetches teach us nothing? Does it really matter whether or not we have "stars on thars"?

Yes... the star is compensation for all those bastards who bought you only one gift for Christmas and your birthday, instead of your rightful two.
"And, if we are talking about "birds" are they Lesbians?"
If they are LUG-birds, I'd have to say yes as well! (Not the Linux LUG, btw).

"I need a part for a sculpture that can spin, but maintains contact with electrical wires (so I can have a string of spinning motors wired together without wires twisting ever tighter)
What is this called and where do I get it."
You need to use a slip ring or a rotary joint. slip ring is very simple, used in AC motors and alternators and can be fabricated easily.
