Wall-E Robot Toy In Action
Posted by Brian Lam at 4:38 AM on May 5, 2008
We just saw the Wall-E toy in action, and its a pretty interesting toy (Although not US$190 worth of interesting.) The best features include fully articulating tank treads, 10 motors, audio and vision sensors, remote control by both joystick and touchpad, individual shutters on each eye, and collision detection. Wall E also has a "follow me" mode that'll allow a Wall-E to stick to a kid or dog and track it around the house. (We would have tried it out, but it was far to noisy and crowded at Maker Faire for Wall-E to track anything or anyone reliably.) [Maker Faire and Wall-E]

Looks ok but would much rather a Johnny 5 model.

I'd pay good money if I could get one with actual binocular lens eyes, and can fold retract into a little box.

That remote will be indecipherable to half of the purchasers.......why not just give him a PS-style joypad?

Why is it that almost always when people at these types of events are interviewed they seem completely lost and don't know what the hell they're talking about? It really annoys the piss out of me.

Oh that is too cute!
When you first posted this I thought a lot of WALL-E's charm was lost because his eyes looked dead.
Now after seeing this video his LED eyes video look full of expression! For under $200, I know i'll have this, especially since the R2 projector is now on back-order....

I want one of these things so bad. Any news on availability? I was content with buying one when news on this was first posted, and after finding out more about the features on this thing it makes it all the more vital that I get one. Although it would awesome if it had a camera on it that would relay video to the remote.

Oh, this will be a fun rebuild! Add cameras , mic & speaker, airsoft gun, extra batteries, re-gear the tranny for speed, green lasers, TOO MUCH. I have to find a way to get my mits on one without spending that much $...

@Garth Knight:
If you add an airsoft his name wouldn't be wall-e anymore.

@strider_mt2k: Maybe you could get it to say Wall-E without sounding like 1970's computer audio.

I think it would be a sweet toy for the 2nd verison and some modest modding. I would just need to head to my local hobby shop and upgrade some of it's motors and we'd have Wall-e running at full speed. Cute and I'll be looking for it in the clearance section near x-mas!

The toy at davelei.net/lego looks lethargic and the video above sucks. Anyone have any better information on this rig?

Wait until you see the 'real live' model that will go on tour of the talk show circuit closer to the movie release date. That one will be cool.

His eyes remind me of the animatronics in the Star Tours rides in Disneyland. Looks a bit better than I expected, still think that's not enough features though. Like the fold-up mechanism, and the arms look like they don't really do anything.

PS: Love the tank tracks
