Wall-E Movie is Jonathan Ive's Latest Design Job
Posted by Adrian Covert at 10:27 AM on May 13, 2008
CNNMoney/Fortune has a story out saying that Eve, the female character to stand opposite Wall-E in the movie of the same name, was designed in part by Apple lead designer Jonathan Ive. The robot design is kinda cool, in that it reminds me of the most recent incarnation of Marvin the Paranoid Android, but the real story to be told is of Ive's day spent with the Pixar guys working on Eve.
Wall-E director Andrew Stanton said he wanted the design to be high-end, but also "seamless and for the technology to be sort of hidden and subcutaneous." Stanton called this philosophy straight out of the Apple playbook and called up El Jobso in 2005. Steve sent over Johnny Ive for the day.
But oddly enough, Ive was as tight lipped as ever, despite being commissioned by Jobs for the task. So while the Pixar designers were running design ideas by Ive for Eve, all he would do is nod his head yes or no, as to whether or not he agreed. "Apple is so proprietary and so secretive that he couldn't even really allude to where the future of technology was going," said Stanton. And Pixar is a company which Jobs owns a stake in. Kinda creepy if you ask me. [Fortune]

@jozen: AHHH thank you I couldn't put my finger on it, but it looks exactly like Automator (who I think actually has a "name" from Apple).
I'm so pumped for wall-e by the way.....

Ive could have told them, but then he would have to kill them. And dead directors and designers really slow movie production down.

It has no USB ports, non-user replaceable battery, and has proprietary peripherals (head and fin-arms).
Let the fun begin.

Dear Pixar,
Please do not make Cars 2. You're just doing it for the money.
2010 can't come any slower... been waiting all life to watch Toy Story 3.

I think design wise, it's not working at all. This eve should be a girl but I don't see any resemblance (from what I've seen so far from trailers).
Weird it could pass Disney's creative judgement.

@Playstation: Sure, the same way they blocked Pocahontas 3: Indian Summer...
And about the movie, you can't be putting down the movie if any of you have yet to see it. And the design of both robots plays a part with the story...

I find it ironic that Wall-E is the character that most people can relate to in the movie, just like the PC character in the PC vs. Mac advertisements. Maybe Apple should take a hint from this in their advertising that sometimes the likable looser is the better character to hock your products.

@howismydriving: Do you really think PC isn't hocking Mac products? That they don't know our sympathies are with him, that he's funny, and charming?
The stupidity of people who say Apple is stupid because they like PC more is astounding. Apple doesn't want you to have pity or sympathy for their products, but do use the lovable loser to sell product.

@macbob1: very good points.
If Mr. Jobs or Mr. Ive does indeed read this blog - he should think on about the mental welfare of his staff long term.
It all comes at some cost.

This shit is getting old! Ive is the best in the world, no doubt, so is Jobs, but this freaking story shows just how F up they have become. I bet these people never talk to anyone making working at Apple worse than working at the NSA.
I bet most of the staff at Apple suffer from anxiety due to not knowing where they stand, can get cast off at a whim or never knowing WTF is going on.
The goods are great, the way to get there is F up!

@olafson:
as someone who actually worked on this film, let me assure you, Eve is not, in fact, a bland pile of plastic. Her surface and materials are incredibly rich and detailed, as you'll see when the film is released.
But she is, absolutely, very Apple iPod-esque.
