Updates for Vista, XP Cleared by Microsoft After Delays
Posted by Adam Frucci at 5:06 AM on May 7, 2008
It looks like Microsoft has sorted out the issues that came up with its new Service Pack for Windows XP as well as Vista SP1. XP SP3 has been sent out to Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Centre and Microsoft has also resumed automatic distribution of Vista SP1. Try to remain calm; I know it's exciting. [Microsoft]

SP1 still hasn't showed up in Windows Update yet for me. I'm sure it's a conflicting driver, but it would be nice if they created an application that you could run to let you know exactly why SP1 isn't showing up so you can deal with the offending driver/issue.

I don't know that I've ever said, "Vista, gotta get me some".
That said, I'm currently unable to direct download either installer files or .iso files from Microsoft for SP3.

@Darrone: I've been running vista for about a year now. Ever since a bump to 2GB of ram it's run smooth as hell.
Anyhoo, SP1 installed on my laptop just fine when it was first rolled out.

@jaximflash: failed driver or your missing an update...
i'd suggest going into windows update ... check for updates, install everything, hardware updates and optional recommended updates... then reboot, run a check again and SP1 normally shows up

Very accurate choice of words.

Ever since I got my free copy of Vista Ultimate from that WFP program, I'm not so sure anymore if I want to install it on my PC.

I have been running Vista 64 since Oct. and upgraded to SP1 as soon as it came out and have not had any problems. Happy with it.
I also installed XP sp3 on my old rig last week when it was supposed to release. So far no problems, but I don't really use that computer very often.

@phantam: As of SP1, Vista and Server 2008 share a common code base. Aside from default configuration and various client/server components like Media Center/AD/RRAS/etc that won't be found in both, there is little to no difference between them.

I installed Vista last week when I got it in from the WFP and I've yet to run into any sort of issue with it. Installation went smooth, all my devices are working properly, SP1 installation was smooth as well. I'm using a laptop and it's by no means a powerhouse setup, but everything runs very smoothly and without issue. It's been that way with any version of Windows I've used.

@phantam
My computer is up to date. There's a laundry list of things that will stop your computer from seeing SP1. For example, having a Logitech webcam installed was once one of the possible reasons why SP1 didn't show up. I had removed this driver but SP1 still didn't show up. That's why I suggest that a program be created that you can run and find out the exact reason why SP1 isn't showing up. That way you don't spend much time troubleshooting.

You know, evewn though MS doesn't claim a performance increase for SP3 like the blogs say, I am in fact experiencing a faster bootup.

I just installed XP-SP3 on all three of my machines and kinda worried when I got back from the store and they ALL said "Please Wait..." STILL.
After another hour I manually restarted my secondary machine without incident then went ahead and did the others.
Yes, faster boot times on all three machines now, aside from that I don't see much else.
Am I crazy for jumping in with both feet? Perhaps, but I know how to swim these waters. ;)

@Joseph: I went with a full system backup. I've always found XP's System Restore to be useless.

Update -- good thing I made that backup.
I installed the Windows XP Service pack 3 on a Windows XP Professional edition PC. After a day or two, both my wired and wireless connections suddenly disappeared. It wasn't only that I couldn't connect, but also that they were gone from the Network Connections in the Control Panel. Then I tried to open up the Device Manager, and the entire list of devices wasn't there. I rebooted a couple of times and there was no change.
I decided to restore my system to its pre-SP3 state using a full system backup I had created prior to the install.
Hopefully MS can get a better version of Service Pack 3 out at some point. For now I won't be installing it on any of my systems.
