Ultrasonic Batgoggles Turns You Into Steampunk Batman
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 8:53 PM on May 27, 2008
Giz reader and Batman-wannabe Suneth Attygalle has built these cool, albeit a bit goofy looking, ultrasonic batgoggles. As you can see in the video, they allow the wearer to detect the proximity of objects using just US$60 in components, including welding goggles, a microcontroller, and ultrasonic sensors.

Yeah, I can imagine some applications to that... but I have no idea where he saw "batman" on that. Like someone already said, looks more like Nite Owl from Watchmen or something...

Hey, these would be really useful, if you put them on the back of an SUV, so you know when your about to hit something, oh wait.. they already have those.

@froggy:
I think the goggles are basically acting as a blindfold, so you can only use the echolocation feature for detecting objects.

Oops -- forgot to say that it was designed to give blind people information about their environment.

A much smaller and more sophisticated device called the Sonic Torch was developed 45 years ago in New Zealand by Dr. Leslie Kay.

Given that his instructables page starts with a tantalizing "Wish you were bat?" and halloween is almost half a year away, I think I'll wait for version 2, which will likely include wings and a guano dispenser.

It takes imagination and class and good manners and self-control to prevent oneself from bursting out loud laughing at someone who puts on these goggles yet takes themselves so seriously.

this world you come from... it must be fascinating.

Why even include goggles? I was hoping for something really cool like an ultra sonic sound wave derived image inside those goggles. Instead, we have beeping (i.e. not ultrasonic) and what appear to be redundant antennae and goggles...
fail.

I would've put the ultrasonic stuff backwards, so I can wear the thing while biking and tell when I'm about to get rear-ended by a vehicle

Come on guys, the goggles serve a huge purpose. Now when he's walking down the street, before he smacks face first into a pole, he gets to hear obnoxious beeping (which will get everyone's attention), and look stupid in those goggles as he smacks into it. Two uses in one!

This makes him look like Briareos from Appleseed! If you were able to get longer distance range finders, numerical output for them, and add radio receivers to the antennae you'd have yourself a pretty sweet piece of kit.

Actually those make him look like Briareos from Appleseed. If you put some more work into those, ie: numerical output range finder, longer distance range finder, and also added radio receivers to the antennae you could have yourself and interesting piece of kit.

@thechansen: Damn iPhone and its lack of flash. So what I gather this works with audio? Congrats you just made a head mountable rear collision avoidance system. My parents Ford Edge does the same thing.

Dang... I was kind of hoping that a device so fugly looking would at LEAST redeem itself by having an stereoscopic viewfinder to show nearby surfaces in some shape...
But hey - maybe he“ll win some art contest somewhere.

if that's a parallax ultrasonic sensor you get about a use-able 2 meters. And I doubt it looks like anything similar to the scene in daredevil where its raining. It probably looks like a string of numbers that are hard to accurately gauge streaming at a rate that would probably give you a seizure.

Ehm... what exactly do these goggles do, except bleep like mad when you hold your hand in front 'em?
Based on the description, I thought they would project a 3D image of your environment on the glasses, for like el-cheapo night vision.
Total bummer.
