Any new player in the on-line auction game would have to mount a massive advertising campaign (extending to the US where Ebay sellers are very disgruntled) to attract the numbers of buyers and sellers needed to be competitive with Ebay. I have tried other Australian auction sites with only a 10% success rate (on Oztion). Having said this, Trading Post already has the advantage of widespread reputation to launch them.

As much as I agree competition is a great thing and certainly eBay is pushing away sellers and anyone who is not fond of Paypal. I just doubt that sensis can really deliver. None of their sites actually provide decent services. It's just such a shame that after all these years and all the people they have behind them that they can't release a decent online service.

I think the comment made in the article that "competition can only be a good thing" is the real standout point. The problem is that eBay haven't really had any competition in Australia; having more sellers = having more buyers = attracting more sellers and so on. At least Trading Post have a small but loyal group of repeat users; and if the auction side of the business can at least be cashflow neutral if not posiive, then it'll help to consolidate existing users and hopefully attract new ones.

As an eBay powerseller (soon to be ex-eBay) the attraction of Trading Post is that I can list a hundred or two niche items for free, and only pay a fee when a sale is gained. This way, my customers have more potential choice of my items, and I pay fees only when a sale is made - everyone wins.

While I've not had problems with Paypal in the past, the main issue is that not all buyers are willing to sign up to Paypal regardless of eBay's bleatings that it increases protection. Net result; less buyers, unhappy sellers. Ironically I still use paypal on my website www.88speed.com because their OSCommerce integration isn't too shabby.

Final word? Good move Trading Post; surprised it took you this long! And thumbs up to Oztion. I'm winding down my reliance on eBay - nice knowing you!

My partner and I used to sell a heap of stuff through eBay (at one point, it was a major contributor to my business sales). But their fees and policies have totally sucked of late.

It could get some people to move over, but I've never experienced anything good coming out of Sensis. Oztion is probably the next best thing.

see this is all good and well but the thing that is great about ebay is the ability to buy things that you normally could not buy in australia, and since sensis/telstra will no doubt be locked to australian customers and sellers (as a ex sensis employee i can say thrive from locking down sites) it defeats the purpose of just going to ebay which has more choice.

sure bank deposits arent allowed, but paypal is an easy choice that 90% of the time i've used anywya regardless of available options and i dont see what the big fuss is about really :/ once again its the media making a mountain out of a mole hill.
