TiVo Remote Control Over IP via Telnet

When TiVo worked with Crestron (the home automation company) to provide integration between your DVR and your wall control panels, they actually opened up a door for people to control your TV with just about any computer. All you have to do is telnet into your TiVo via port 31339 and type in some commands. It's pretty basic now, but the telnet interface means you can easily rig up an iPhone remote app or do some kind of port forwarding to remotely control your TV from outside your home. Why you would want to do that is your business, since we don't want to tell you how to best spend your time. The complete command list after the jump. Type IRCODE in caps, followed by any of these commands.

@hnkelley: You could piss off someone at home by changing the channels. Besides that, maybe you could write your own program to parse the tv guide and automate your viewing or recording in advance.

Am I missing something here? I already control my TiVo from the TiVo web site and from TVGuide.com. It's for setting recording, but what else could I need? If I'm not there, I don't need things like fast forward, etc. Of course, if I am missing something, I'm sure someone here will tell me.

I was able to do this with SendKey.tcl like 6 years ago on my TiVo.

i cant wait for cellphones to evolve into some of kind of electronic key for just about every electronic function you can imagine

Uh, yeah - that was my Internal IP address. Good luck finding my public IP, traversing my router, and talking to my TiVo. Then again, by posting this comment Giz now knows my IP. Blam, Chen - leave my stuff alone! ;)

@sandmanfvr: I'm willing to bet that was all done on a lan, and if you tried to telnet from outside to that address you would not get the results you expected... go ahead and try though and let me know how that goes for you

@hnkelley: if you are unsatisfied with the remote that comes with tivo, program your own, complete with all the macros and state dependent buttons you want

@takemetoyourtoaster: your laptop will one have telnet abilities if you successfully quest for it.
the quest goes like this:
Program -> Run -> "telnet"

i agree i don't see what the big deal is other than some other geeky thing that's just cool because it's possible.
the tivo came with the ability to control it through the web, and an iphone can easily navigate to the web site. i could even do it on my outdated treo.

@sandmanfvr: yeh...cept he told us his local ip address................not his WAN. even if we have his WAn im sure he wouldn't forward this port to this IP address given anyone could technically remote into his TiVO. yep.
