Terminator Ad Looks Like a Rip-Off, Makes Sarah Connor Chronicles Even Worse (NSFW)
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 3:00 AM on May 4, 2008
We like Terminator as much as we hate companies who rip-off the work of artists without even crediting them. This is apparently what happened with the poster used to promote the bland Sarah Connor Cronicles TV series: some blogs are reporting that the Fox channel's poster was allegedly copied straight from a striking montage created by someone else before the series were even announced. Compare the full images after the jump (NSFW).

As you can see, unlike the Sony Bravia ad, this is not just "inspiration", this is a direct copy in which some elements are copy-pasted. We have to say we had high hopes for the series, but apparently it was headed to the Department of Mleh right from the start. If they wanted to copy something, they could have followed the Terminators' sex positions. [My Confined Space via Hollywood Newsroom]
Update: We know that there's the possibility that this may be by the same artist or licensed. But we are reporting on what other blogs are reporting, which is exactly why I wrote "apparently what happened" and "was allegedly copied" in the article. I've changed the headline to make this position even clearer.

As an artist, I wouldn't mind if someone decided take influence from, or even recreate my personal work. I don't have illusions that I create something new or unique, I just absorb what is around me, just like everyone else. But for heavens sake! That arm is a direct copy/paste! I really hope some asses get whipped because of such tasteless plagiarism.

The artist shouldn't have to sue. As soon as one of the execs was made aware of the rip off the artists that stole the work should be fired and sued by the network. Then they can pay rightful artist.
Why is it so hard for corps to do the right thing and how do they expect the average joe to not share files when they are actively involved in stealing from the artists also?

As for plagiarism yes it is. Was it purposeful I don't know. It's very possible someone saw the original years ago when it came out but later forgot about it but it became a subconscious inspiration for this one. This happens quite frequently actually and is the cause for the spread of a lot of ideas around the world.

Question, since blogs are always so quick to condemn.
Where is the actual story that says the student that did this is not ok with it? Or an article that says the student was not paid for the work? Or an article that says the student did not create this for the ad campaign because of his previous work?
The linked story doesn't say, and neither does the article here.
So are you just assuming that the original artist had nothing to do with the artwork for Terminator?

1) I didn't think the series was that bad.
2) I think the new female Terminator is hot.
3) I think cut-and-paste design theft is extremely poor form.
4) I am very happy that Giz found an excuse to post the original pic, as she is even hotter than the female Terminator.
5) I may feel differently re: the relative hotness of these two girls if I could see both pairs of breasts and the same amount of torso.

Human beings have existed a pretty long time and they have written, drawn, painted, sculpted, and imagines a *lot* of things. I think we are awfully quick to call images and ideas a "rip off" when we have no idea where they come from originally. We need to relax on that stuff. Some people have mentioned the borg queen. The artist H.R. Giger has produced tons on work along these lines and themes for years and I'm certain there are others. A female robot torso is *not* a brand new concept. Almost nothing is a brand new concept.

Sarah Connor Chronicles was probably the best thing I've seen on network TV in five or ten years. I thought it was as good as Deadwood or The Wire. And that scene in the pool of the last episode is still my favorite moment in anything cinematic. I expect that we'll see that copied. That said, I'll be surprised if it doesn't turn out that the ad and the other image aren't from the same person. The ad agencies, and especially Fox and Warner Bros., are very good about making sure there is no copyright infringement on their part.

Lets put the credit where it belongs. Both images have elements identical to The Puppet Master in Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell, published 1991. Seems that the poster maker ripped the left arm wires directly from the complete torso image and both illustrators ripped different additional details from Ghost in the Shell.
If the there wasn't that shape detail on the arm, I could believe that the artist just came up with female-torso-hanging-from-straps all by himself. The doll like leg sockets at least are obviously unrealistic enough not to be plagiarized.

The Terminator image is up on Jill Greenberg's website [www.manipulator.com] She's a very successful photographer, so this would be a major embarrassment for her if it turns out she plagiarized a student's work. @Jesus Diaz: "how is this stirring up controversy?"
It's not, too bad for you, but it is clearly a failed attempt to manufacture it. As someone in the media, if you have any integrity at all, you need to be aware of things like Manufacturing Consent. Just because Fox is another media outlet with a history of treating Sci-Fi badly (I still want to nutkick the person who cancelled Firefly) doesn't mean you get a pass when you do things poorly yourself.
"We find something and report on it."
No, you didn't. You're just hyping up rumors without even tagging them as rumors. Rumors are shoddy reporting, and using the negative "rip-off" spin is plain wrong when you don't have evidence of it. It is unquestionably an interesting similarity, but that's as far as it goes without getting the facts like a real reporter should.
"Aren't you surprised the images are more or less the same?"
Why should I be surprised? It's obviously skilled artwork, boobs or not, so it makes perfect sense that someone at Fox might have seen it and liked it enough to pay the person to tweak it for Summer. If you wanted a real story you would have tracked down that artist and done a feature on them instead of regurgitating what other blogs are crapping out.
"In a way, this copy-paste (regardless of its origin, it being with our without permission) is a metaphor of the show itself: repetitive work."
Oh, please! Don't try to rewrite tiresome gossip as an artistic critique. Not when your whole "Update" excuse is that you're just doing it because other blogs are doing it! There is irony and a half in that. Stop defending your mistake when it just digs a deeper hole.

Come on... those 2 blogs don't even have any hard facts. And are really just saying the same exact thing. At least have a link back to the original ad students blog? That does exist somewhere, right?
But at least their "reporting" doesn't include that it makes the show worse. Sure, opinions are what blogs are sometimes about.
But since those blogs only had a one line entry on something that may or may not be true with a lack of any facts, you had to throw in some fluff to try to make it witty?
"And this is a copy, a rip-off, a pixel-by-pixel facsimile, a variation of a previous work no matter how you look at it."
Yes, it is one of those things, but you can't group all those things together as if they are the same. But your title only says RIP-OFF, it doesn't say any of those other possibilities.
I mean the guy who supposedly created the original was an ADVERTISING student, and the Terminator poster was an ADVERTISEMENT. What conclusion would a rational minded person draw given no links or facts from the original creator?

@Jesus Diaz: "So nah, I don't agree with you and your holes."
Whether you agree or not simply doesn't matter. In reality, Fox either ripped-off the work or they didn't. You provide no evidence that they did, so that even if it turns out they did it just means you got lucky. It is shoddy reporting, and your excuses only further serve to make Gizmodo look bad.
"I think you are just trying to ignore the language of the article (which is quite clear)"
Yes, the language is clear, but clearly not in the way you think it is. You see, your use of "rip-off" implies knowledge about the legal dealings of the parties involved. If you just wanted to comment on the works, you could have used unloaded words such as same, similar, copy, duplicated, homage, etc.
It is your job to understand these things. Putting an emphasis on looks does changes a thing. It's equivalent to me finding a wallet/purse/whatever on the street and going to turn it in to the police: I neither ripped it off nor should it look like I ripped it off, because they have no knowledge of how I came into possession of the item. Similarly, you apparently have no knowledge about how Fox came to use the imagery, so it's not your place to accuse them of ripping it off.
"because you feel offended by my judgment of the appalling quality of a series that failed to deliver its great potential."
When have I made a statement about what I thought of the series or shown any interest in your opinion of it? It may just be we agree about the quality of the show, and you're just fabricating my supposed offense because you think it conveniently draws attention away from what you've done wrong.
Stop it. Just stop trying to justify a behavior that has no justification. The right thing to do is to find out the facts of the matter, and be thankful you dodged a bullet if you turn out to be right. Until then you need to be quiet, because you've turned me into a defender of Fox, and that just doubles how ticked off I am.

@Rabid Penguin: That's just the point I'm making. The article isn't about "looks like another picture", it's (now) about "looks like a rip-off". There is a huge difference there, and that's why Diaz's "language of the article" cover just falls flat.
@wonkydonky: I'm not looking for impossible journalism. I'm just looking for reasonable reporting that is hard to find in old media. Most of us have come to expect this kind of garbage story from the big guys, which is why we seek out more independent blogs. But, hell, if we can't even get that online anymore then you're absolutely right in that we should leave. I even made that point when I first responded.
The problem with us leaving, though, is that it doesn't solve Gizmodo's problem. The site should be looking to get better instead of looking to slide into the same pit that other media has. There are only so many people they can alienate before they become the next remember-that-one-tech-site site. Forget the complete lack of gadget content in doing it: there are better ways to post boob pics than insulting the artist, the show, the company, and us readers.

@Computer_Chef: I appreciate your comments. With a name like wonkydonky though the comment is quite in line I must admit.
I am waiting for Gizmodo's full endorsement of his comment as their position as well. Well, actually maybe their non-response so far to yours or his is just that. Well we should give them a chance to respond.
I check this article now and then to see if anything has been updated. I find your comments refreshing and yet other than attacking you and/or possibly me I can't seem to figure out what your attackers are advocating for? Protecting ignorance of the facts perhaps? Or maybe it is just being real cool by making irreverent personal attacks on other Gizmodo commenters.
Like I said time will tell if Gizmodo say decides to be mum about your points and endorse total lack free for all attacks on their ... well I just may be assuming they even consider themselves responsible for what gets said here. They may just consider it everyman for himself but like I said let's see what they say.

Whatever guys. Quit whining. At least the Giz brought this out to light.
And I used to like the X-Files. Hope the upcoming movie does justice to the name.

@ninjatales: I apologize for whining ninjatales I should have known you would be reading this. Thank you for taking time to read the whole thing to discover that is was whining and taking the time to let me know.
True true Giz brought it to light and FBI Agents carry flashlights too. Sometimes the story is the story. By the way, Giz can handle it they're big boys and they probably get off on us hitting the page views and each other.
I feel the same as you about the XF. Sometimes I look forward more to Fan Created Vids than anything Fox would put out.
I posted on Gizmodo and got advice and I didn't even have to "Ask a Ninja" He just popped out of nowhere.
I love Gizmodo. It brings out the alpha in all of us. How's it going Jesus. How's the view from where you're at. 63,813 views and 91 comments on this one you earned your keep on this one revisions and all. :-)

@Fox Mulder: Heya Agent Mulder. My comment wasn't really directed towards you.
Just swinging it wildly at the halfadozen responses denouncing the post and trying to point out that if it wasn't for the Giz, people like me wouldve never gotten the idea of a legless fembot.

@ninjatales: Understood ninjatales.
It would be cool to have this hanging as a chandelier piece in my futuristic home but I would definitely need drapes or I'd hear a knock at my door and someone saying "We have a warrant to search the premises."
Nice ninja pic. Did you know Bobo Fett comes from a long line of ninjas. Your pic reminds of him.
Peace out.

@soldstatic: and she is a Prima Ballerina. For her the pole is horizontal.(please note this is the kind of comment I think I could get away with on Gizmodo and is not representative of my more mature comments on other Gawker sites like Lifehacker)

I'll weigh in with my support for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I enjoy the show and the season finale was very good. And yes, TV Guide already reported that FOX renewed the show for a second season, so any speculation otherwise is absolutely incorrect. Even before the official word, stories were out about how the show was quietly getting back to work producing season 2.
As for this potential plagiarism/rip-off brouhaha, I will withhold comment until we get more information.

Oh no, I just hear what sounded like a Meatloaf song in a cell phone commercial! It sounded similar and some of the lyrics were a blatant copy and paste!
Meatloaf should sue!
As always, bloggers jump the gun on somethign they know little about. Networks, ad agencies, and designers have been doing this work for decades; far longer than Bloggers have been replacing the letter "S" with "$" in every corporate giant's name.
The pay for stock art, they work with original artists. They pay royalties. They have to get ideas and designs from somewhere. Fact of the matter is that chances are that the artwork is paid for and everyone bitching about it is wasting time they could be using to listen to a good Meatloaf album or buying a pre-paid cellphone.

@mconheady: I know you're being sarcastic somewhat, but that really is Meatloaf starring and singing in that commercial...
