Sony Video Glasses Will Turn Everyone Star Trek Chic
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 5:30 AM on May 25, 2008
Answering Mark's prayers and bringing us all one step closer to looking like Geordi La Forge, Sony has unveiled eyeglasses that can show full-colour video images. The prototype supports a QVGA resolution, weighs 120g, is 3mm thick at the lens, and has a contrast ratio of 50:1.
The glasses use a proprietary holographic waveguide and an optical engine made up of a LED light source and a transparent LCD panel. Video coming from the optical engine is reflected by a film in the holographic waveguide. It then bounces off a glass plate and is diffracted to the eyes by a second holographic film.

Before it brings the glasses to market, Sony is trying to slim the prototype down to 80g and make the lenses transmissive enough to be used in dark places. The company says it's hoping to commercialise the produce by 2010. [Tech ON]

Watch the resolution still be 640x480 like all the other shitty video glasses!

That's pretty cool, if a bit geeky-looking still. I can't wait for useful augmented reality. Imagine: looking at a hotel, and seeing prices and a link to buy a room, looking at a sign in a foreign language and seeing a translation pop up... the possibilities are endless! Just a couple more advances in machine vision and semantic web stuff.. ooh, the future is cool. Now when can I get these as contact lenses?

At some point, 8-10 years ago, IBM had this commercial where an irritating schmuck had a tiny little flat display on a bracket about an inch in front of the right lens of his eyeglasses. He was daytrading, and yelling and kicking up a general ruckus among the pigeons in what looked like Red Square or something. I wanted one of those.
I liked the idea of the Glasstron, too, but decided it probably wasn't that good, or else they'd be selling lots of them.

I also wonder about the eye strain factor. I've never had a chance to check out a pair of VR goggles/glasses, but it seems to me that you'd have a really hard time focusing on something that close to your eyes. (At least, without the help of some lenses, that is.)
@hnkelley: I'm guessing that if you can plug them in like a regular display, you'd be able to do all this and more.

"make the lenses transmissive enough to be used in dark places"
This is so a lucky diplomat wackin' off to porn can check to see if anyone is looking. :P

As soon as Sony perfects their cross cerebral hemisphere hack exploit that allows them to install a brainstem root-kit, they'll start selling the glasses retail at a price less than the cost of manufacture. The first corporation that can control the consumer, will rule the world. Before you buy, be sure to carefully read the section in the EULA about mandatory software updating, and implied user consent.

@Sora57: Ah, yes, sweet memories of our naïve past. Like you, I also ordered a set of X-Ray Specs in the early 70s only to find they were a fraud. Of course, unlike you, I was in college at the time...

@bosskev: When we were kids my brother and I ordered those glasses back in the 60's or early 70's. I will never forget the day I put them on and suddenly realized what "truth in advertising" meant. Lying bastards! How easily a horny kids dreams are crushed...

I've been looking video glasses for years, I-Glasses and Sony Glasstron always intrigued me, but never enough to buy a set. The value just isn't there, nor it is worth the eyestrain.

Nice advance on the video glasses. I think it needs to be paired with a full spectrum camera so you can switch between IR/heat, UV, regular modes, or even set it up as a directional RF sensor for visually mapping out the WiFi coverage for a large installation.
And for porn, of course. (Just be sure to wear something... um... tight... so no one notices your reaction.)

I swear Chris Cornell just sang "I shot my load today, would you cry for me", or is that just my mind.
I always thought if these would be cool if you could attach a camera to video glasses and zoom in on points of interest and take shots.

Make the LCD display two-sided so while you watch one program while those looking at you see something else, another program, or maybe a pair of animated eyes.
