Just like sovereign Indian nations, the countries would effectively be controlled by the government of citizenship for those that still need the freedom to enter their homeland or the services provided by them, Internet included. The federal government controls states, Indian nations, and foreign allies through the bartering of various advantages of civilization. These colonies would be no different.

If the colonies engaged in anything sinister, like counterfeiting, piracy, slavery, pedophilia, etc., they would be embargoed by everyone except n Korea and Burma.

Question - Who do you think is going to come out there and save you guys from drowning when something goes wrong? An emergency responder from that high barrier government. Maybe the State of California should get some prepaid coast guard insurance beforehand.

Actually this could be a perfect use for all those oil rigs bobbing about in the oceans after the last of the black gold has been sucked up by the greedy Exxons and their ilk.

I reckon they'd be happy to off load them real cheap so I'll be saving all my pennies and pence to snap one up in the not too distant future.
