Samsung's High End 650 Series LCDs Reviewed (Verdict: Great)
Posted by Brian Lam at 7:50 AM on May 1, 2008
CNet's reviewed Samsung's 52-inch 650 series LCD, the LN52A650. While there is a 750 series, it's worth noting that those sets get MPEG and MP3 playback from USB drives but have the same picture. So, for this generation of Samsung LCDs, this is as good as the picture gets. In summary, David Katzmaier loved the set.
The black level performance was probably not as good as the 81 series that uses LEDs (which I love.) But combined with the highly accurate colours, streaming of weather and stock data across the screen, 120Hz video processing, and excellent standard def processing earned this TV an Editor's Choice. The neggies? That same high gloss panel finish we've come to detest in daylight. Read the full review at [CNet. Samsung 6 and 7 series LCDs on Giz]

I have the 46 incher and love it -if the price is the same bigger is better. I'm guessing the 52 incher doesn't do 1080 or something. There must be a drawback. I highly recommend getting the robotic arm which you control with the tv remote also made by samsung. It tilts, rotates, and telescopes which is nice for glare issues.

I'm waiting for them to upgrade the 81-series with more LED's...I think they use like 70 individually dim-able regions...but the original prototype by Brightside (bought by Dolby) used around 1400 regions, and used some super-bright capable LED's to achieve HDR imaging.
Even if they use cheaper/less-bright LED's, using more of them will improve the picture quality methinks.

there is a ln46a850 (LED backlight) coming out to replace the 81 series but it wont be out for a month or 2. if you are looking for LED backlighting on your samsung you will have to wait or settle for an inferior 81 series.

Aside from the MP4 on USB thing (something we'll never use...), what makes the 81 "inferior" to the 850?

@duntuk: should know that a major difference between the 81F and the 650 is the refresh rate. The 81F refresh is 8ms and the 650 is 4ms. It is noticeable with the 120mhz auto motion plus.[www.samsung.com]

@shawn_dude: improved contrast ratio, built in sub woofer and 1GB internal storage, internet connectivity, and improved 120Hz engine to remove "triple ball effect" (TBE), just to name a few
