Samsung Challenges Casio with US$850 Slow-Mo HMX20 HD Camcorder

As excited as we are about Casio's Exilim EX-F1 camera with slow-mo and high-def video modes, we're even more thrilled to see actual competition in this category. Samsung announced its HMX20C (or HMX20) at CES, and is now officially shipping it, at least in Korea, for a price around US$850. That's about US$150 less than Casio's Hiro Nakamura supercam. Here's what's similar about the two models:
• Both can do full high-def shooting—Casio at 1080i but Samsung beats it, with 1080p
• The Samsung can do slow-mo at 300 frames per second (presumably in standard def, but maybe in HD; Casio can do 300fps, 600fps and 1200fps
• Both can take still pictures while shooting video—very helpful indeed
• Although the Samsung is positioned as a camcorder and the Casio is called a camera, they both have 6-megapixel CMOS sensors
Given the CES announcement and the Korea launch, we can only assume that the HMX20 will be one of the items in Samsung's summer line show lineup. That's good news for everybody—except maybe Casio. [Samsung Press Release via PC World]

Hmx20c ;1080p FullHD cam, slow motion at 300fps, and low price.
I think hmx20c is moderate model for all users in easy.

The Canon HF100 is down to $750. No slo-mo, but a better picture, and you can plug external mics into it.

I would gladly pay $150 less for better high-def shooting, possible 300 fps in high-def, and the loss of 600 and 1200 in ultra low-def.

@carmen89: One thing I noticed in Japan -- a cosmetic dentist could make a fortune. I'm guessing it's a similar situation in Korea. Apparently only Asian-American girls are hot AND have great teeth.

When will the flash-based camcorders pricing reflect the fact that they don't have half as much moving parts as their HDV/DVD/HDD/Blu-ray counterparts ?
A Canon HV20, which is a very good 1080/24p HDV camcorder, can be found for less than 1000$... A camcorder like this new Samsung should be around 500$. At last, 850$ instead of 1000 is a step in the right direction.

finally some competition. I would much rather pay $150 less to samsung over casio, a computer known for calculators and cheap midi keyboards. Who honestly needs 1200fps? Those mentos coke videos took forever to watch.

I would only pay extra for slo mo if I could take a trampoline to a local Hooters for the wait staff to demonstrate, or maybe for filming women at Miami beach as they walk out of the ocean.

This says you get 90 minutes per 8 GB, meaning 12Mbit/s. This says it records 1080 60i and 1080 30p to H.264 at Superfine, Fine, or Normal. So, hopefully 12Mbit/s is for Normal, and Superfine is more like 25Mbit/s. I put CHDK on my Canon SD1000 the other day, maxed out the video recording quality to 99 and was able to record 50Mbit/s MJPEGs to an old 80x transcend sd card. They didn't look a hell of a lot better than the normal 10-15 Mbit/s videos, because there are other limiting factors, but the capacity is there. 50Mbit/s progressive H.264 would look amazing if the encoder was powerful enough. 50Mbit/s MPEG-2 could also look great, but not need as much power.
