Official Indiana Jones Fedora Available Now For Nerds Everywhere
Posted by Jason Chen at 8:00 AM on May 15, 2008
The reason that the official Indiana Jones Fedora is available on Think Geek is that only geeks think that they can pull off wearing a fedora in the year 2008. The only fedora you (us) nerds should stick to is Red Hat's version, leaving Indiana Jones' to the still handsome but greying Harrison Ford. If you really do want to pick up your own version for some down-home sexy play, it's US$99. Everything's in stock except for X-Large and XX-Large, further proving our point that only overweight nerds will buy and wear this outdoors. [Think Geek]

Cool product, though someday I will get one of the more expensive, yet accurate ones.
As for the person who wrote this, I must say you argu like a 5 year old.
I know a lot of people, geeky and non-geeky alike, who wear a fedora, and pull off the look very well.
Your "article" is nothing more than holier-than-thou , half/no-truth drivel, and anybody who takes this seriously is a moron.

@Redwraithvienna: I believe it's a vestige from the Pax Romana.
S = 1/2
M = 1000
L = 50
XL = 40
Obviously this measuring system was confusing and likely was the downfall of the empire. It's also why clothing manufacturers can't figure how to be consistent.

The actual Indiana Jones hats were made by the Herbert Johnson Hat Shop in England.
[www.swaineadeney.co.uk]
You can order one for £190, considerably more than the $100 Think Geek is asking. Theirs is an officially "licensed" version, meaning they're paying Lucas for the rights to produce the hat. It doesn't mean it's from the same pattern or of the same quality, just that Lucas is making money from the sale. I don't think the real hats have a little brass "Indiana Jones" pin on the ribbon.

Let me preface by saying I am not overweight, balding, or outwardly identifiable as a nerd.
I wish the practice of wearing a Fedora with a suit would come back into style like it was in the 1930s and 40s. There was a time that your suit was incomplete if you left off your Fedora.

Actually, last fall/winter, Banana Republic sold a women's fedora hat. Sadly for me, the gray sold out quickly. But this proves that fedoras aren't just for fashion-challenged nerds nowadays, they're en vogue.

@92BuickLeSabre: Indeed they are.
A fedora is the only hat I've found that suits me. I "rock" mine every day with my professional "threads".
Also, in addition to looking "stylin" the fedora/long-coat combination is amazingly effective at keeping one dry in even the worst rain.

And hats are back. Dig it.

Actually, I was a haberdasher when the original Indy movie came out and Stetson was the manufacturer of the actual wardrobe hat in 4x fur felt (60% rabbit, 40% beaver). The in-store sales item was originally an all-rabbit felt variant, with a synthetic band. About a year later, they actually renamed their untrimmed-brim low-crown fedora to "Lost Ark" as part of the marketing campaign. There were royal craploads of cheap wool knockoffs coming from everywhere. I actually had one of the original rabbit fedoras and wore it for about 8 years until the brim finally seperated from the crown due to wear and tear and sun and sweat. That's a fabulously rugged hat. I still have the "Lost Ark" from roughly 13 years go, gray, in much better condition as a 4x beaver felt, with the traditional leather headband. I do still wear it whenever I'm wearing a nice dark suit, or when I'm traveling to cooler climbs. That hat has weathered rain and snow in the UK and France. Still holds its shape. Still soft and supple. An excellent lid. Don't be fooled by these cheap wool imitations such as the one presented here, folks. They end up as ragged, pilly lumps of crap after a few seasons. Buy the original Stetson fur felt fedora and you won't be unhappy. It'll last for decades if you treat it right.

@Parapraxis: nice guess, but not even close.
The button hole was intended to help anchor a hat in the case of strong winds. A cord would tether the hat to the suit via the button hole.

Maybe things have changed, but real hats used to have sizes
like 6 7/8, 7, 7 1/8 etc.
7 1/2 would probably be an XL today.

I've been wearing fedoras since the 80s, when I was in high school. Yeah, people thought I was weird but it's a look I've always liked. Now I have a whole collection of fedoras and hats of various styles and people know me for wearing them.
I'll say that I would never wear one of these knock-off hats. Many have mentioned that you can buy them for $40. That's a cheap hat. Besides, I wouldn't want to actually LOOK LIKE I was trying to LOOK LIKE Indiana Jones. Thankfully, none of my brown fedoras are like that style.

@anti-hello-kitty: The button hole is traditional. It used to be used in the cold, you would flip up the collar and button it so it wouldn't fall down again.
What's even more fun is why there are buttons on the sleeves of a suit coat.

Hey you don't have to be overweight to have a large melon. I wear an official Indy Fedora (black though) every day. I'm 6ft tall and weigh a respectable 180lbs.
I wear an XXL hat. I've had dudes that are 300 lbs put my hat on and say "Dude this fits me! You got a big head!"
Now let me go cry myself to sleep on my enormous pillow.

This is the "official," "licensed" hat... but it's not manufactured by the ORIGINAL hatmaker, Herbert Johnson in the UK. An authentic hat will cost you about $300. This hat is about $40 at Disneyland.

You've heard of the crutch wielding Darth Vader?
That's going to be nothing to the Crutch and/or Oxygen Tank swinging Indy. Hell, Harrison Ford will be doing that in the next Indy sequel, if Georgey doesn't decide to have a computer do it for him.
