Nokia N96 Available for Preorder, Due 7/31 for… $1,200?!
Posted by Adam Frucci at 4:18 AM on May 30, 2008
Nokia's upcoming N96 monsterphone might just be coming out on July 31st with the wha-wha-whaaaa inducing pricetag of US$1,200 if Play.com is to be believed. At least that's what the pre-release price is on that site — Nokia's estimated retail price is US$800. That's still a bonkers price to pay for a phone, but it's significantly less bonkers than US$1,200. In any case, 7/31 seems as good a date as any for the N96 to drop. We'll see if that actually happens. [Play.com via Symbian Guru]

Please send a link to this story to all the people who choked on the iPhone's pricing, and suggested the N95 instead. Maybe has better hardware, but overall experience? worth 3 TIMES an iPhone (if the $1200 tag is true... twice as much if the $800 tag is..). Now THAT'S ridiculous.
This will probably have very comparable specs to the upcoming iPhone, which makes it silly to have it priced like this. iPhone 2 will be more than the current, but there is no way it goes for $800.

@Rabid Penguin: If it did have one, your kid wouldn't call you to tell you how much he hated you... He would just call to ask if you could pick up some Kleenex on the way home from work.

And people complain about Apple pricing!? The iPhone and MacBook Air are starting to look like bargains compared to Nokia's pricing structure. Ouch!

@Rabid Penguin: lmao..poor kid.
Really and honestly this phone isn't THAT great. People are just idiots if they pay that much. Didn't nokia want to charge people like 2 grand for that communicator phone?
C'mon. Get an iPhone or a Blackberry.

This will make a great birthday gift for my kid. He'll no longer be able to go to college, but at least he can call me on his new cell phone from McDonalds to tell me how much he hates me.

Well first off it's supposed to be released in about September, think how long the N95 took to come out after they announced it. I highly doubt a site which sells it in Dollars would know anyways. There's no way America will get it before Europe and Finnish or South Africa.

@RoCKSTaH53: What I suspect is that Nokia's pricing will be deemed rather reasonable, because it's the price of an unlocked phone, does this, does that, makes you fuck longer and harder, can has more emailz, can send MMS or some shit, feed the dog, walk the cat and screw the housekeeper on the side.

@JoeKing:
*ahem* $2400 MacBook Air. Welcome to the UK, where EVERYTHING is overpriced. Same MacBook here from authorized channels is $1799.
Also, Expansys and Play.com are notorious for putting phones on preorder at astronomical prices that won't ship for an age. Just wait until the Xperia X1 has a hard release date. They'll have it up there at £750.

@dry-roasted-peanuts: @Viakenny: Fair enough. I generally just assume if it's tech / strange sex act related, that it's a Japanese creation. I definitely need some better stereotypes, because mine always end up being wrong.

Well, it fits with the 1st of August date I'd heard elsewhere.
@JoeKing: in the UK, this handset will be free on, at most, about a £40-45/month (~$80-90) 18-month contract.
The iPhone, on the other hand, cost ~$550 on a $150/month 18-month contract.
Try knowing what you're talking about next time.

Wow, I'm glad I just went with the N95... and not even the 8GB version that doesn't have a memory card slot.
Sheesh. $1200?! Even the $800 eMSRP is nuts.

No keyboard and no touch screen or pointer device. What the hell do people use these things for? Web use without pointer is downright painful and writing is slow and inconvenient unless you are an sms freak. Sure it's a nice piece of hardware but interacting with it is like Morse coding.
They seem to have again included the instant screwup button. Stop buttons made sense in tape devices, but they have absolutely no value anywhere else. Pressing stop in most digital players results only in losing information of how much of the file you have already played. That is insanely annoying when listening anything longer like podcast or audio book and just plain pointless for short files.

@Bloodboiler:
I have my N82 hooked up to the Apple Bluetooth keyboard. Its a great combo.
And yeah, pressing stop and then pressing play resumes the podcast or audiobook.
