Myhab Recyclable Concert Dwellings Now Available For You to Do Horrible, Horrible Things In
Posted by Sean Fallon at 9:00 AM on May 10, 2008
We first came across the Myhab festival dwelling last year when designer James Dunlop was in the process of developing the concept. Now it appears that the Myhab is open for business in the UK. The customisable units are made from recycled plastic and waterproof cardboard and include foam mattresses, temperature insulation and a lockbox to store your valuable herbs possessions.
They are also pretty pricey to rent at a whopping £120 or $240 per person. That's right, I said "rent." Once the concert is through, the Myhab is dismantled and set up for the next customer. Man, we have come a long way from Woodstock where you had sex in the mud, did your drugs out in the open and loved every minute of it. No word on whether Myhab plans on expanding outside of the UK anytime soon. [Myhab via Hippyshopper via Core77]

$240 per person per night? No thanks, I think I'll drive my ass home sleep in my own bed and drive back the next morning for the second day of the show. I'll donate the savings to "showers for festival goers" a non profit that takes phish fans off the streets, forcefully cleans and deodorizes them, then returns them to the concert.

Although the dodgy climate idea makes sense.

I thought that said 'My rehab' at first, which is what one would need should they ever find it in their interest to pay for one of these.

So correct me if I am wrong, but is that like a hard plastic tent?
That seems pretty expensive for something you can do in a tent.

You know, that would be a really interesting way of making a "tent" (well, ok, you wouldn't likely want it made of cardboard). If it could be taken down and stored flat in modular pieces, and didn't weigh (much) more than a tent and all the gear; it might actually be a superior way to camp, especially in a dodgy climate (rain, extreme temperatures, etc).

I'm guessing part of the high cost goes into service, cleaning the sheets, mattress, etc. And those cardboard walls are just begging to get graffiti all over them.
"Mary and Jane were here" etc.

If I ever have the need to rent one of these, I hope that I don't have a UV light with me. Seeing all of the other previous renters' glowing DNA deposits will give me the willies.

At last, a solution to my dilemma! I love sitting and laying outdoors, but that direct sunlight business really ruins things for me and tents don't come with lockable storage. Oh wait . . . I can buy a tent for a fraction of the rental price of one of these things and keep my stuff in my pockets, so maybe I just got excited over nothing.
OK, so they do actually look kind of neat and the lockable storage might be handy even if it is a bit low-security, but the price is just too high. I can imagine students putting these things to good use on college and university campuses if they could be purchased or rented cheaply on campus. Hmm . . . maybe I should start up just such a service.
"Brought to you by the guy who some snotty young woman walked by complaining about seeing people sleeping on benches at school even though he was actually awake and just relaxing with his sunglasses on. . . it's Study Den! Available for rent at the Student Union with and without sunroof for incognito cloud-watching!"
The first part of that was a true story, by the way. It happened a couple weeks ago at SJSU when I was just relaxing on a bench between classes. Ha ha.

Well it depends if it's $240 for a five day concert or per night, doesn't say. Also they should have put the lock on the outside, to keep people from wandering in and having sex, taking a leak, or passing out on your bed while you're gone (or all three). I can see these as tempting when port a potties aren't nearby...yuck.
For me, if you have an SUV (and lots of people do) getting an air mattress and cooler and enduring the walk back to it to sleep the night would be much more comfortable and a lot more secure than this thing.
With most SUV's you can remove the seat rows for extra space, inflate the bed using the lighter adapter, and lock the doors at night.
If that price is per night, you can easily rent a camper for that much and really live it up.

I thought these were a fantastic idea at first. Then I saw the price.
Mind-bogglingly expensive.

Who's going to buy these? $480 for two people (chances are you aren't there by yourself) is absurd. Why would you pay $500 to RENT a glorified tent.
Get yourself a tent and an air mattress and call it a day. Best part about it, it's yours to take home and use again and again. Besides, if you are sleeping out at a concert instead of at home or a hotel, chances are you don't care a heck of a lot about your accommodations anyway.
