Mentos and Diet Coke Explosion at 1200fps: Casio EX-F1 Strikes Again
Posted by Benny Goldman at 3:30 AM on May 5, 2008
Giz reader Robert Woodhead combined two things that I just can't seem to get sick of seeing: Stuffing Mentos into Diet Coke bottles and the super-slow-mo action of Casio's EX-F1 camera to create this stunningly beautiful video.
Woodhead compensated for the 1200fps' paltry 336x96 frame size by stitching four different Mentos tests together, and the results are awesome. Globs, ribbons and rings of Coke that are impossible to track in real time come to life when seen in slow-motion.
Watch out later today for another homemade slow-mo video; things will only get messier. [Robert Woodhead]

@kaneshadow: I was wondering this myself. A little research shows it is probably powdered gelatin, since that or gum arabic are both probable factors in the whole chemical shebang.
Powdered gum arabic isn't exactly a household staple, though, so it's probably Knox gelatin or something.

The 4th frame was a test using salt as a nucleation source, it didn't work very well, alas.

Wow. His music source is so easy to steal music from. It's $35 per song, but download the sample song, which is an mpu file (mpu files stream music from an mp3 source; so it is grabbing the mp3 file from somewhere and streaming it to you) and change the extension from ".mpu" to ".txt" and it shows you the source of the mp3. Copy/paste into url, and there you go, your free $35 dollar song.

Everyone talks about how dark the 600/1200FPS video was on this camera, but all of the videos that I've seen were indoors. When it's shot in full sun (like this video), it isn't dark at all.

mentos are these pills that improve your mentation and allow you to come up witty solutions to everyday conundrums. Like the time before a job interview when I sat on a freshly painted bench. I popped a mentos and ended up rolling on the bench to make the pattern even. Boss didnt even notice.

@fastmike: The effect wouldn't be any different than say adding dry ice to water and tightening. The point at which the pressure makes the bottle burst doesn't change.

@strider_mt2k: Nice yard in the background, too.
All credit for that goes to my wife, who is, as they say, very much the mistress of her domain.
@notatoad: the music is "buyout", which means you can use it in just about anything, such as background music, as many times as you want, you just can't resell it as the music alone.

Wonderful work. Question: is the beautiful music Johann Strauss' 1864 Blue Danube ( An der schönen blauen Donau), i.e. the piece used in the _2001: A Space Odyssey_ docking sequence? If so, odd of the Coke-Mentos filmmaker not crediting the composer (and instead crediting some production house which likely produced a recording 130+ years later)

@bazzers: About crediting the actual music, I just figured everyone would know it was The Blue Danube; same goes for the William Tell Overture in the other video (aka The Lone Ranger Theme). Plus I was a little tight on space...
@isaacws: A dry-ice pressure failure on a bottle would probably not be that interesting because it would fail so fast (the rupture would propagate very quickly), plus it would be dangerous to video.
I have a test video somewhere of dropping a brick on a flowerpot; the brittle failure of the pot takes 1 frame at 1200fps to propagate around the pot.

@PipeRifle: um, I believe, and I may be incorrect, but I'm pretty sure that this is not really a chemical reaction at all, but a physical one. The CO2 uses the many microscopic nooks and crannies on the surface of the Mentos as nucleation sites around which bubbles form from cavitation. Doesn't matter what the chemical composition of the surface is - if it shares that nookie-ness then it will exhibit the same behavior.
