LG Kills Blu-ray/HD DVD Hybrid Player
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 6:19 AM on May 14, 2008
LG will stop swinging both ways with HD formats this spring, when it ceases production on its Blu-ray/HD DVD combo player. (Samsung's is already dead.) I'm just kind of amazed an already dead format manages to keep getting deader. [DVD Town]

they should have added an ethernet port for updates. There really isnt any good reason not to get a PS3 as a blu-ray player

they should have killed it long ago especially since there is no 2.0 BlueRay to begin with!

This player (BH200) is profile 1.1 compliant has the hardware for 2.0 and is only a firmware update away. It currently does upgrade over ethernet and bitstreams the HD audio codecs to a compatible receiver. It really is a nice player. Now they'll just remove the HD part of it (like it's a disease or something) and raise the price...

I agree, if I go Blu-Ray, it'l be in the form of a PS3, silly not too. BUT, I still like the fact some are still supporting HD for those of us who jumped the gun and Got an HD player as well, now we don't have to ebay them or see them collect dust, the pictures are still amazing, seems sill to just waste them. I play the few I have on My X360's HD player and love it, especially through My LCD Projector. Good Times!!!

@vertibraker: How about the fact that virtually no universal remotes work with it? The fact that it won't work with my Harmony is the reason I've not picked it up as my Blu-Ray player.

My Harmony 880 works perfectly with it.

I would like for them to continue making Hybrid's, so that HD-DVD is still usable.

PS3 is an attractive option to some, but many videophiles are not, and will never be, gamers.
You will undoubtedly see a vast array of Blu-Ray players in stores this holiday season at prices well below the cost of a PS3. You can already find a selection of high-end Blu-Ray players if you have a high-end home theatre.
If movie studios are smart, they'll issue some good movies on Blu-Ray at attractive prices too. Otherwise, kids will choose low-resolution iTunes movies just as they chose low-fi iTunes music.
If you didn't already pick up your HD-DVD player at the $75 blow-out sale, then you missed it. Stop reminiscing already.
