Latest 3G iPhone Rumour Brings GPS, Mobile TV, Videoconferencing, into the Equation
Posted by Addy Dugdale at 7:50 PM on May 14, 2008
A report in a Swiss publication claims that the long-awaited, much-speculated 3G iPhone will rock GPS, mobile TV and videoconferencing. Le Matin claims that mobile phone provider Swisscom will get the privilege of flogging Apple's mobile phone in the land of the cuckoo clock, and that it will be available some time this summer (AU Winter). Tell me new please: every 3g phone in the uk has video call capability though it does cost an arm and a leg if you don not have video call minutes in your bungle (50p a minute).
All i want and i think everybody in the uk want (The little thing we take for granted because we presume its in every phone, in the uk at least)
Object exchange bluetooth to send pictures and docs to my computer and fellow friends within a 10m radios
MMS
The ability to use any mp3 song as my ringtone like any other phone
Video recording
3.5mm headphone jack (well this one is only in Nokia Nseries phones but as the iphone incorporates the best mp3 player i think its a must.)

Dear Land of the obese,
Always amusing to see that America is boiling down entire countries to "land of the (fill in sterotype)". It's funny, because its true..

Maybe it's hard to distinguish in the land of sombreros, but the land of the cuckoo clock is rather blackwood forest which is in southwestern germany...

Aha!
"In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed - they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."
And the mists clear.. ; )

@Kuijs: @jonnykid: There's this classic movie that everyone (well, almost) knows, it's called The Third Man. Yes, everyone also knows it's a stereotype and a wrong one at that, but otherwise, they get it. Look it up, good flick.

Oops, my bad, not American, Espagne it seems..
Still the Brits still carry umbrellas and the Americans still drink soft drinks from buckets. I guess in Spain, well, who cares, maƱana..
Oh god, this wasn't meant to turn into a racial stereotpyes rant, just an abject comment about summarising a nation based on one thing. Think I'll turn off my PC and go and eat my roast beef under my umbrella whilst watching Monty Python and Benny Hill.
Sorry.

just that you know that Le Matin claims almost once a week that the iPhone's comming to switzerland and that it is (in my view but i'm trillions of years away to be the only one to think so) it's one of the worse newspaper in our country.

@nojo: That is my biggest complaint. Why do they not have removable batteries in a communication device? Seriously, if I'm stuck in an airport or on a plane, I can run the battery down in two hours watching a surfing the net or watching a movie, and then I'm phoneless when I get to my destination. And yes, I know they make the battery dongles, but I don't want that crap hanging out of my phone while I'm trying to use it, and if I'm going to pay for a dongle, why not just let me pay for a swappable battery?!!!

when the vu and access came out last week I thought that mobil tv would be a snooze fest on it. But I've been amazed at how many have gone out the door. The trick is that most of the people buying it could care less about the internet and for 15 bucks a pop it's well worth it. It would be in Apple's best advantage to include media flo or whatever on iphone 2.0 are you listening it would be to your best ADVANTAGE!!!

Yeah but what about 802.11n?!?! Currently the iPhone is the SLOWEST thing on my all-Apple network and I could be running at 5GHz Wide Band if it weren't for our iPhones!
I haven't needed GPS, I don't watch TV on my phone, but damn could I really use 802.11n

I dont see how this is big news, the only thing on there that is kind of a suprise... and probably not going to happen... is the video conferencing. It has been assumed that there will be GPS for a while now, and as for mobile TV, who cares, with 3G we can have our slingbox play through our iphones at a much higher quality and lower price.

I think they meant to say the iPhone will have video calling not video conferencing. This of course would mean that Apple is taking full advantage of the HSPA technology which can support streaming both data and voice at the same time unlike EVDO on CDMA networks which can only do one at a time. I do hope that Apple increases the resolution of the camera and makes it possible to record audio/voice for podcasting. It would also be nice to see a L.E.D. flash on the back camera to help in low light conditions instead of tweaking an image in iPhoto. Does anyone know if it will support UMA? Personally, a 3mp camera is all it really needs. Without the massive body of a N95, the camera can't be autofocus and produce camera-quality pictures anyway. Besides, it's a phone, not a camera. 3mp and video would be fine. It's amazing the quality my old SE W810i had over my current SE just because of the autofocus camera...
(also, there's more to cameras than megapixels, people! The Mars rovers are 1mp, and the Hubble is .8mp black-and-white only!... It really depends on the size of the image sensor and other factors)

Man, I just hope that the "video conferencing" will be implemented like iChat - I want it to be able to communicate with desktop IM applications and I want it to be free. I'm not interested in paying extra to be able to see the person I'm talking to.

@The Full English Please!!: you can already use any mp3 for a ringtone after clipping and conversion to mpeg4.
video recording is pretty likely if video conferencing/chat is supported. i'm pretty much counting on that.
i assume MMS will eventually come as a software upgrade, but its not clear you wouldn't want to just continue emailing the multimedia images to avoid possible additional charges by the service provider.
i also believe they already officially said the custom headphone jack was history, so that should be solved.
and yeah, i agree better bluetooth connectivity would be ideal. i'd like to be able to do simple calender and address book updates via bluetooth sync at a minimum, but full object push/pull support would be great.
