Iron Man Review (Verdict: 126 Minutes of Gadget Porn)
Posted by Brian Lam at 11:19 AM on May 2, 2008
The Iron Man flick pressed my buttons from start to finish. Specifically, that little gadget nerd button over my heart, right where Tony Stark's arc reactor plugs in. On one hand, Stark's legendary womanising, alcoholism and vanity are way underdeveloped. (Disappointingly, Downy Jr. looks too sober.) But if you're at all interested in the future of exoskeletons, holographic 3D CAD, advanced heads up displays and stuff blowing up under the recoil-free power of repulsor beams, you're going to want to see this movie, well, just to see it.
AU: I wouldn't class anthing in here as a spoiler as such, but there are some aspects of the movie discussed that might upset some people wanting to see the film. If so, don't read it.
The story, well, it's there. Stark, a wealthy playboy CEO and genius of his weapons company finds himself held hostage by terrorists using weapons he designed. That unbearable irony and guilt lead him to Do The Right Thing. He builds an advanced exoskeleton suit but won't sell it to the military. Oh no, he's done being a merchant of death. He's going to blow up those using his weapons for wrong and eventually he uses it to battle a Traitorous Adversary. It's believable to a nerd, like most comic books. (Because we want to believe.) But the tech, the tech is set up in a way that makes it unnecessary to suspend your disbelief. Just sit back and enjoy the techno porn. More or less.
So, this was definitely the best part: blatant displays of advanced technology and engineering scattered in almost every moment of the movie. And not the cheesy kinds you'd find in shit like The Net or Hackers or Lawn Mower Man. It all looks so good and feels so good that know-it-all part of your geek brain won't trigger alarms at the fictional gadgets. Not that often, anyhow.
Let me try to step through a few of em.
Stark, notorious womaniser, is being grilled by a gorgeous lady reporter and with a cocky turn of phrase, ends up bedding her. After a short, unexciting unsatisfying love scene you (seemingly directed by a 40 year old virgin) you find her alone the morning after. And Stark's tech hits us full in the face. The Malibu mansion's outer wall doubles as an overwrought alarm clock with translucent touch interface spitting out dozens of metrics for the day including temperatures, news and other must knows by voice and those floor-to-ceiling windows. As the camera pans away from the visuals, which I wanted to stare at for another few minutes, you see an unnecessary qwerty on the side of the wall. The reporter, skin looking so soft and wrapped in a white sheet, stares out over the ocean, but seems half astounded by the tech too. Rightfully so.
There's this whole kidnapping thing from here, and well, you see Tony banging on a suit he builds in a cave, from the trailers. Sure, OK.
Back to modern life, Stark prototypes the primary Iron Man suit as a matter of obsession, and we're brought through the process. He's got a bunch of Dell gear on multiple monitors, and a pen type stylus he waves in the air, as if he was Mickey in Fantasia. He starts a new project file, a copy of the original, and then uses the stylus to drag it all over, in real air, to a horizontal desk with a white top. The square is a holographic projector, but not some lame arse 1-way projector. He dips his hands into the well of light and the models in the air move with his touch. He starts from scratch, and so, the old designs get manually tossed into a digital bin on the side, one piece at a time. All the while, he is conversing with Jarvis, his AI butler who he assigns more menial design tasks to, like calculating the time til the prototype will be complete (5 hours or so.) At some point, one of the high points of geek giddiness, Stark's reaches into the repulsor gauntlet design hologram, and wears it. Wears a hologram!
The crowd, Techcrunch readers, and by nature, technologists, did not laugh at any of the tech until the scene where a hacking-by-usb scene occurs, complete with "Download 100% complete" popups. I will say no more.
There are, of course countless fire fights, including those versus the Final Boss, a pair of US Joint Strike Fighter planes, and plenty of terrorists, and a tank. All very satisfying applications of the suit, but you can find that in any superhero blockbuster. It was all the underlying geek subtext inbetween all the fights that made it worthwhile.
You've seen the suit in the seductive movie trailers, including this one where an army of robot helpers dress Stark up, and another where he tests out the HUD and flight capabilities. Just know there's a lot more of that, and to good effect. When he first puts it on, the dialog between Stark and Jarvis reaches its nerdiest, with talk of suit compression leaks at altitude, Titanium gold alloys, air control surface test runs, and a lot more stuff I can't remember and shouldn't spoil. Oh wait, wait, there's a fun moment when Jarvis is giving Stark constant alerts of impending battery run down and Stark yells back,"Shut up, just put it on my screen!" for an instant UI tweak. Watching the suit develop through trial and error helps to explain the power the exo skeleton has, and all the times he screws up while doing test run make everything just a little more digestible of a fantasy.
The source of Iron Man's power is that little glowy ring in his chest, which creates massive power for its size. (3 Kilajoules per second or something in its beta form.) That too would be suspect since Tony micronised the company's room sized cold war arc reactor technology to fit in a watch box while being held captive in a cave. But hey, you're dealing with a genius here; the best engineers in Stark Enterprises attempt to recreate it in the labs, and call it impossible without Stark's spark.
Again, I'd say that Tony Stark's character was underplayed. Yes, Robert Downy Junior was a natural in this role as a drunk, womanising playboy. But I don't think the script let him run far enough with those facets.
Another thing: Tony's taste in real estate, women and weapon tech is high end, but the product placement of every day brands didn't live up to the man's lifestyle. I nitpick: Don't mind the wonderful Audi R8 in a dull silver (or those fake burn out noises that Quattro doesn't suffer from and the lower end V8 engine), the S5, and a Q7 which plays as projectile in one urban battle. I mean, I like Audi, but the suit stole the show. The same complaint goes for the LG/Verizon handsets which do video chat in the Afghani desert, and the Dell gear all over the place. At least I think I saw some Linux action going on in there. But I'd peg Stark for a guy who'd use a Nokia or Sony Ericsson, if not a hacked A-Phone.
Even the final tick of a solution to the movie's final problem is a technical one having to do with the suit's flight surfaces at altitude. The explosions never cease, but the answer to the conflict has to do with the gear's engineering. It's a triumph of fantasy tech gear over evil. And that's why Iron Man could be the perfect Gizmodo blockbuster.

The planes aren't Joint Strike Fighters (F-35 Lightning II), they're F-22's. They look very similar but when you watch the movie again, which i'm sure you will, you'll notice F-22 written on the planes.

It was 3 GJ/s. Which is 3GW. Which is a shitload of power--like 60 Seville solar thermal plants, or like all the wind turbines in Texas. But then they ruined it by saying that that value and unit implied it would last only 15 minutes. That would be 3/4 GW-hours then, wouldn't it? But I nitpick. The film was a work of art.
Aw shucks, back to the nitpicking: he flies from CA to Afghanistan, and there is no indication that it took less than 2 minutes. Also, that's a lot of energy. Flying and throwing stuff around is one thing, but it was the 15,000 mile flight that pushed my belief my suspension the most regarding the power supply.

In the comic book, he created the suit because he had a heart condition - or a piece of shrapnel lodged near his heart (or maybe it was both).
I assumed, when he's in the cave wearing the wife beater - that the little glowing circle on his chest was to help/protect his heart - is that not the case?

The power source seemed to me like a nod to both major fusion concepts I've heard of.
The large arc-reactor in the plant made me think of a Tokomak (it's definitely torroidal), but "arc-reactor" made me think of the other fusion concept where negative electric fields from all sides hold in protons tightly enough and long enough to maintain fusion. The latter looks like its arcing when they test it. (Maybe it actually does arc--but the goal is to have less of the wasteful and damaging arcing.)

i'm with you guys on the underdeveloped, I left the film thinking, yeah, much better then fantastic 4. but the trouble is, batman begins was the first comic film to really provide tangible deep characters that were as well developed as any multi award winning oscar. opening the film with that new dark knight only underscored what an achievement the new film will be. As comic flicks go, it's worth it and i'm sure i'll see it again, but there were many moments I found myself wondering why decisions were made not to develop this character more or illicit anything more from downey jr who's proven in other films like zodiac that he can be far more dynamics.

My only complaint was that they got a bit over-the-top with the crashing. There were several accidents where he crashed with/without the suit that would have obviously caused broken bones -- particularly one incident in the lab.
However, it kept the little kids laughing, so I guess that's why the director took it that far.

@fudged71: You know guys like you ruin movies. I really try to put all of my "that would never happen" tendencies aside when watching a movie. Especially a comic book one. And I worry you may be one of those people who finds the most unbelievable part of Superman is that his disguise are his glasses and lack of a hair curl. Hmm, it's not that he's an alien that can't be killed and is uber-strong and can fly, none of that bothers you, the part you can't accept are the minute details. It's a movie! I'm not here to watch reality I'm here to get taken away, the only time you should have such an attitude is with a documentary I believe.
And you went to see "Pink Panther", a dumb kids film, and was upset that it wasn't scientifically accurate? It's a dumb kid comedy not a science textbook. Do us all a favor and anyone like you, leave the theater. Your sighs and snide remarks are annoying and don't make you look intelligent it makes you look like you have no imagination or distinction between reality and fantasy.

@MJDeviant: Superhero movies are formulaic in a way because the source material is. Comic book heroes usually start their lives through a very rigid Conflict -> Revelation -> Action sort of sequence.
Tony Stark, through a wartime act of kidnapping and espionage, is confronted with the realization that his life's work is destroying the lives of the innocent, and he sets out to make it right.
Bruce Wayne, through a senseless act of criminal violence, is put on the path of vengeance before realizing that revenge is not true justice, and he sets out to clean up Gotham.
Frank Castle, through a terrible act of mafia vengeance, loses his family and is put on the path of violent revenge against their killers. Along the way, he realizes that there are others who could benefit from his brand of vigilante justice.
And so on, and so on. A superhero movie should not be rated on believability or "originality", it should be rated on its faithfulness to the original material, its appeal to the general public (and not just the fans), and its ability to engender the sense of childlike wonder that is ostensibly the point of comic books themselves.
I say Iron Man nailed it.

Overrated. This felt like every other superhero movie ever. I guess it doesn't help that there is ALWAYS the military, a girl, and it was another origin story. To me, this felt EXACTLY like watching Lee's HULK. The tech was cool, Downey was good, but the movie? A dud. I'm starting to think AICN is being paid to approve movies. This site? There's cool gadgets so like it away.

"...no seriously, I am Iron Man" That killed me. Ok, no one has said anything about the private jet scene with the dancing stewardesses and the Pole in the middle of the cabin....disco lights, and the short skirts and shorts. I laughed my ass off.

@MJDeviant: It's not formulaic. Those are the structural elements of the genre. Not the "comic book" genre mind you.
Comic books are mostly epic 'hero' stories. The genre that dates back to Homer's Illiad and Odyssey. (Beowulf as well). You might say they form the foundation of Western literature itself.
Just thought I'd throw a historical perspective in there.

I have to admit, when I first read "Stark's one night stand" I thought to myself... "huh, only one? don't people usually have one on either side of the bed?"

@MJDeviant:
Are you sure you weren't being raped by Lee's HULK while watching Iron Man? That would explain why it felt the same.
Lee's HULK is trash. Iron Man was a great movie. Sure a lot of the superhero movies (especially the first ones in the series) have a lot of common themes or elements. But it can be done well like Iron Man, Spider Man, etc, or horrible like HULK.
Hopefully the new Incredible Hulk movie with Edward Norton is good.

@MJDeviant: I'm really happy you're expressing your opinion as an opinion, and you're welcome to it. The best advice is probably what you've already suggested: stay away if you don't like superhero movies, because they're probably not going to change.
But honestly, thank you for saying "I was bored", "I didn't like this", "I'm hard to please" and so on. Most people would just say "this movie sucked" or something like that. It's refreshing to see someone who can admit that to each, their own. Hopefully if you do find yourself at a superhero movie, the next one rubs you the right way (and hell, Dark Knight is only a few months out!)

@MJDeviant:
Agreed. The new Hulk looks like the same old, same old. He's a pissed off giant green guy that the military wants to destroy. There's no room for developement! Batman and Iron Man will both continue on though.

I'm a movie person, not a comic book person, and movie-wise I was just bored during the movie. Downey was great, the gadgets which are in the movie VERY briefly are great. I know it has a source material, but come on. I'm hard to please. I really liked Batman Begins, but I've been watching Batman since I was little, so that's a little biased.
As far as being a genre problem with repetitiveness, well, then it's a genre I'm going to start having to stay away from. IMO, the best comic book movies to me are Blade, Batman Begins, Sin City (okay a little bit of a novel there), and Superman was okay. Comic book movies are WAY better then video-game adaptations, but if they keep doing the same thing over and over, I notice and it's not a plus. That includes the new Hulk movie which not only seems cliche but seems cliche AGAIN! Hopefully Norton's is better, but by the look of the trailer, I'm in for another genre experience. And add unbreakable to the comic book movie, I know it's not really, but that was a good superhero movie.

@MJDeviant: Right on. I can't speak about Iron Man yet (new theater in town opening I'm waiting to see it at), but I agree with your opinion on the other movies. Blade 1 was brilliant (just watched it again last night). And you can't beat Cristian Bale as Batman: dark, tortured and kinda psycho.
The Hulk movie was piss poor, because it was trying TOO hard to innovate. A genre based story/movie can be innovative without playing with your expectations of the "standard" plot.
Iron Man, wearing what is essentially a suit of armor, is a testament to the potential benefits of technology in the face of what many would consider the detriments of technology. All this on top of being straight up, jizz worthy gadget porn!

How is it you have her walking around your house and yet you still need to bring home take out??
Fun movie. I didn't see the stuff at the end of the credits but have heard what it was. As I never read a single Iron Man comic I have no idea who that character was anyway.

@mgoldman89:
The Hulk has tons of great comics from which to draw ideas from. He's one of the most popular superheros in comics. There's plenty one can do. Unfortunately the first movie was so bad it makes it difficult to see that.
In the next movie he'll actually be fighting a super villain (The Abomination) and not just the military :c)

The thing I mostly love with superhero movies, at least the ones executed properly, is that all of these special abilities and privileges that they have don't stop them from running into fucked up problems. Look at Peter Parker, having super strength and wacked-out spider capabilities, yet has to scrounge and take shitty jobs to live in a flophouse in the city. Bruce Wayne is a rich playboy that has some of the coolest batcrap at his disposal, but must deal with his demons and the maniacs of Gotham. Superman is practically a god, but must contend with being alone (which reminds me, what the hell is up with Hancock?).
I dunno, there's just something about the genre in general that gets my movie mojo going.

@pradster and @Xacnhto:
according to the book, TS had food and catheterization capabilities installed into the suit (specifically the space suit Mk1) for the ability to be in the suit up to two days time. This has nothing to do with the movie, but it's just funny that problem was already thought of and dealt with in the actual story.

@PipeRifle: I try to be open minded. I frequent this and Kotaku enough to know that there is arguing a point of view and then there's childish banter. Saying something like "SUCKED!!!!" might be a short statement about whatever but it says a lot about the person typing it. Hence, I am in huge favor of Kotaku's banhammer.

Wow! I went to see it at midnight and I highly recommend the movie. Gizmodo, you did a great job of descibing the tech and gadgets in it. My 10yr old son said he didn't blink thorough the whole movie.
The Hulk preview looked lame. Just like the first movie.

I, however, love movies with superheros and 'sploding. I can't wait to go this weekend! My only regret is that my son is too young to go with me, (He's 2).

When watching the opening scenes of Iron Man, I couldn't help but think of my uber-boss and overlord, Larry Ellison. I know Tony Stark was originally modeled after Howard Hughes, but they must've borrowed some elements from Larry Ellison (the posh cars, the women, the extravagant lifestyles). Hell, they've even got the same facial hair.

Saw it last night at an early digital showing, thought it was great!
Without letting slip any spoilers, when you go see it, YOU MUST STAY THROUGH THE END OF THE CREDITS!! If you don't, you will miss out on something BIG!

On the subject of credits, I felt pretty bad: there was an 8:00 PM show and a 10:30 show, and they let people in for the 10:30 while the credits from the 8:00 were still rolling.
So a couple of early birds are just getting situated when BAM, potential spoilers. I felt sorry for them. There needs to be, as I think someone from the long-defunct Brunching Shuttlecocks suggested, a website that tells you spoiler-free whether or not to stay through the credits.

My theater wasn't perfect, either. As soon as the credits started rolling, the lights came up and they stopped projecting. Fortunately, being a digital showing, they were able to start it back up where it left off without dealing with rewinding film.

This clever, quick-witted, tightly scripted adaptation of yet another superhero movie may actually turn into one of the most respected and highest ranked movies in this genre's increasingly impressive collection.
I am not a comic book guy for the most part and had never heard of Iron Man before the previews to this movie. I almost didn't even go see it, but the good reviews by the critics made me decide to give it a chance. I was NOT disappointed. It was fantastic.
My Social Standards now has my whole review. Check it out at our site, [mysocialstandards.] blogspot. com to see it.
