iPhone / iPod TiVoRemote App Makes Telnet Control Easy
Remember when we showed you an iPhone controlling a TiVo over IP by means of Telnet? Well, over at the TiVo Community Forum, a user named Duckfin has compiled a "quick and dirty little program" that gives the iPhone and iPod touch a proper TiVO Remote. The app which is named TiVoRemote, no surprise there, actually makes practical use of TiVo's Telnet control feature. But as with most apps these days it does require a jailbroken iPhone / iPod. For installation and info hit the jump.
Installation is pretty simple and allows for TiVoRemote to be installed via Installer.app, once a new source is added. After launching the program and entering the settings menu, all that's required is the TiVo's IP address. Once entered, your iPhone / iPod is ready to control your Series 3 or HD TiVo. As you can see from the video above and picture below, the key layout is pretty basic. But I am sure it's only a matter of time till it gets spruced up, allowing the TiVo guy to be on the iPhone / iPod. From complete instructions hit the TiVoRemote link for the Google Code page. LOL... that would be interesting for people to "butt" their iPhone remotely. It wouldn't feel the same eh?

@--Tito--: Cordfucious says that Michael, Jermaine, or Randy would not approve the butting of any phone.
Cordfucious say butts are for watching not iphoning

I cant wait for people to but the iphone as a remote! and just to use it for a remote.

Sigh, even if you're the biggest apple fan in the world you should still get a good universal remote (like the Harmony or better) to control your home theater.

INSTINCT VS IPHONE!

Now thats what I'm talking about. iPhone/Touch control all your media devices. With BT in cars, why not that also. I'd feel much more safer having Apple in my car than Miscrosoft.

when will they make one of these things for comcast?

Here's hoping Apple has the good sense to make an AppleTV remote app for iPhone. The gumstick remote just isn't cutting the mustard.
But enough with the food metaphors...

How about a program to control my PS3 now via bluetooth ?

JUST INSTALLED IT. FLIPPIN AWESOME!

Ugly interface, I suppose it will get better with future versions though. I don't know - I like the tactile part of a "real" remote. You just know where that 30-second skip button is, instinctively & without having to look down at the slender, inviting peanut remote.

is there any way to make this work over your network to control my computer? or does anyone have a good recommendation on a PC remote control?
raiderarch329
niice video quality...I wonder what what used to make this video
mangamonster
@raiderarch329: Touchpad Pro, foolio! It'll blow your mind. This is all very exciting!
@MacAddict21: I FEEL THE SAME WAY!!! :-D
@fusiongt: between this and Touchpad pro, its getting pretty hard for me to justify spending the money on a universal remote!

@FubarGuy: heres hoping. At least its well lit!
I can't get over this! This is so great. Im sure gizmodo readers can relate to my chronic remote control misplacement, but my iPhone is something I never lose track of. I'll never have to scramble hopelessly to find my remote again! Hopefully.
I'd love to be able to save multiple ip addresses, a la touchpad pro, so my girlriend could control my TiVo with her phone, and vice versa.

I'm more impressed with the quality of the video... I wonder what cam that is from??

Why does it need the TiVo IP address?
TiVos on a network can be discovered via Bonjour/ZeroConf/multicast DNS. (It's fun to see all your TiVos show up in Safari - just enable Bonjour support for the bookmarks bar).
Surely they could've done something similar...

Comment on iPhone / iPod TiVoRemote App Makes Telnet Control Easy There's a scene in the film "V for Vendetta" where a character uses a single device as both a cell phone and a remote control for the television in his shower.

Touchpad Pro lets you wirelessly control your PC or Mac through your iPhone or iPod Touch. You can use it to advance slides in a presentation, control your media center, check e-mail -- whatever a regular touchpad and keyboard can do. It's got various features that you really have to see to believe. With ScreenView, you can now see what's happening on your screen and control your computer even if you're miles away. Watch the video to learn more!

I wish there was some way I could use my lawn mower as a remote control for my DVD player. It would be so much easier to use.

@matto: hahah! Touché.
