Google Maps Adds Wikipedia Articles, Geotagged Photos, Real Estate Listings
Posted by Adam Frucci at 8:30 AM on May 15, 2008
Google Maps has just added even more information for your geographical perusal, including the option to place links to Wikipedia articles and geotagged photos from Panoramio on top of your maps. It's a cool way to see shots of areas taken with a more artful eye than the Street View vans as well as check out info written by strangers and verified by nobody of authority. It's also added real estate listings, which you can turn on under the "search options" link. The future is now! [Google Maps via Lifehacker]

Is this where they start listing all the pedo's, crack houses, and hooker locations?

This is really just bringing Google Maps in line with Google Earth, which has had Wikipedia and image links for a while now.

When will they add a "Get out of your seat, and go see it with your own eyes, you fat slob!" option?

This looks like a very entertaining way for someone evil so screw someone over.
I'm sure you guys (and gals) can think of oh so many ways...

Is it me, or did Google really become GOOGLE when they introduced the Maps feature? I mean, just before that... they were Google, the search people. Maps was to Google what Buddy Holly was to Weezer - the thing that made them huge, that they inevitably resorted to recreating rehashing in an effort to stay big. Sure they've come up with some great tools, since - like Gmail, Scholar, Groups, etc... but they've all paled in comparison to Maps. And a lot of their projects are still very much just Map rehashs, like the Maps they have of... what is is, Mars? The Moon? All the things they put on the maps, like Traffic, Street View, and more?
Someone should say "Google...get off the maps already. Do something new..."

@OtioseScandal: The same day we have computer chips implanted in our brain so that we no longer need to know anything about where we're going or even where it is before we go there.

@OtioseScandal: After Giz does so you can, "Get out of your seat, and go see it with your own eyes, you fat slob!" (just kidding!!)
@Spilt_Milk: Um, interesting combo there. Which items are you shopping for vs. which items are you trying to get out of your neighborhood?
I like this. I might start geotagging my vacation pics anyway, so this would be neat. Take photo -> geotag it on Google maps -> link to wiki for more info about the photo's subject. Cool.

@OtioseScandal: I'm pretty sure Google's next project will be a mobile application where you can view/search directions/information directly from your camera phone.

Now can they update the iPod Touch and iPhone app so that it supports these? That would be awesome!

Google copies Microsoft again? Live Maps already had Wikipedia links, as well as real estate listings.

i noticed this last week and thought it was a feature that wasn't new, but hadn't stumbled upon, but now seeing this article, it is new. They must have been tracking all my queries on for sale houses in my area. Good feature Google.
