Exclusive: Dell Mini Inspiron, Their First Mini Laptop
Posted by Brian Lam at 7:07 AM on May 29, 2008
I bumped into Michael Dell at All Things D after his interview, and he was nice enough to show me this laptop that he was carrying that he said no one's seen before. It's a small form factor notebook, just like the Asus Eee and the HP 2133. He wouldn't tell me what OS it's running, or the pricing, but that it's a low-cost notebook meant for developing countries, and I hope here. Maybe it's Atom-powered. Who knows? But I do see three USB ports, a card reader, VGA out, Ethernet, and that red candy shell. I couldn't tell how big the screen was before it was tucked away into a black sleeve and ushered from the building, but it's small.

Make it Microsoft Tax Free and a competitive price, and I will ditch the EEEpc for a red one of these. Thankyouverymuch.
I don't care what Linux distro gets put on, they will customise to take full advantage of the specs, so long as I'm not shelling out another bob to Microsoft. That is what makes the EEEpc my wanted pressie for my missus (who is foaming at the mouth for it Windows Free). That way, she gets a shiny red sub-note to browse ebay, read emails and play cards on (typical n00b stuff) and I get lots more sex for a while. Everyone is happy.

Counting keys, assuming they are not am larger than those on a regular keyboard, you can estimate the screen width. The keys look like 8" worth, and the screen isn't any wider. If it's a 16x9 ratio screen, then it would be 8" wide by 4.5" tall, for a 9" diagonal screen. At that size, the resolution is probably 720 x 400 pixels, or any text would be very tiny.

Yes, the outside is so candylicious that I'd almost pick one up without knowing its specs just from its looks alone. But when you open it up -- blech! The eyecandy just turned into crap with that boring black and silver design. And what's with all that wasted space above the keypad?

@shamoononon: Got a bad case of carpal/tendonitus at the moment which might be from the eeepc and taking 30 pages worth of notes on it in the course of 2 days, not something it was likely meant for. This is basically what I wanted Apple to announce when they came out with the MacBook Air (minor differences, including the OS, of course).
If it goes on sale in the US with linux, it looks very tempting. Dell certainly seems to have finally gotten the 'design' message.

You fools above, nothing makes an HP better than a Dell or vice versa. All parts come from the same place and then are assembled. You sound like such an end user, i.e. my mom. At least Dell is willing to sell its customers any part or upgrade and let them replace it themselves...and I'm even talking about laptops. That's like saying Chevy is better than Ford, same shit, different logo.

Haha developing countries my foot. Just sell them in plain old regular countries at a reasonable price and you will make a fortune. Considering the price of low-end Dell laptops there is no reason at all that some small form factor laptop with a small screen, memory and low storage capacity cannot be at least as cheap if not cheaper.
Asus really seem to have lost the plot on the whole cheap is good thing. Maybe Dell & others can pick up where Asus left off.

These little guys are where the next blue ocean of growth will come. I think it has blind-sided Apple (and others) and, frankly, may have even surprised Asus. The current model is:
(i)Phone for web at all times ---> Laptop --->+/- Desktop ---> Media Center type setup.
But I think it is going to be:
(i)Phone --> UMPC/Mini for on the go "real" computing ---> Laptop
Apple: Please hear my plea! Make a sub-12" Mac Book to rule them all! I will pay up to $1000 if there are minimal compromises... Please!

All I know is that Thinkpad's were built in China, before Lenovo bought the rights to the name and put a different badge on them. They're damn near bullet proof, and they're certainly fool proof, (with the caveat about better fools, etc.)
That said, the contractors that repair the business Dell's on-site wouldn't buy one. They're reputed to be balky, and prone to many known faults, mostly on account of cheap parts. But in this, you get what you pay for.
I own an Eepc 701. I'm willing to bet that the shiny new Dell will not cannibalise Dell's existing Laptop business, and as such will not be a direct competitor, except in size. £200 is OK for a toy, but more than that and you can find better stuff that's been refurbed.

I used screen calipers to measure the thing using the VGA adapter as a base. This is just a rough estimate but it should be pretty close. Based on the measurements it's approximately 10" wide 7" deep and 1" thick (at the back). The screen is approximately 9" though who knows what the display resolution is. I'd guess something in at least the 1024 range maybe better though it would be getting pretty small to see text at that point.
