Dell Goes Urban With Mike Ming's Art House Laptops
Posted by Jason Chen at 5:38 AM on May 7, 2008
What's the best way to make kids who are all hopped up on Apple's MacBooks to get excited about your laptops? Hire Mike Ming, a Brooklyn-based artist, to decorate up the backs of your laptops in graffiti-like designs. These paints are available on the Inspiron 1525 in both Mike Ming and Mike Ming Extreme Edition. The extra cost for Mike Ming to go extreme? US$100. Available now for US$699 and US$799. Also, in about a year, you'll be able to order a laptop with your own custom designs, such as your face or a picture of your kids. [Dell]

Buy a sticker. Because you can peel it off later.

I'd buy it without the "Dell" logo effing up the middle.

From Dell's Mike Ming page:
"...self-expression with a lasting impression"
I am not so sure. However, if you define "self-expression" as "not being able to express your own artistic vision but having enough discretionary cash to buy into a mass-marketed, faux-artwork edition that appeals to the pop-culturally-enslaved consumer", then yes, I agree.

It may be a Dell, but I'd so go for being able to put my own design on a laptop. That said, it's still a Dell, so no deal.

@ripfire4:

what is the really worst laptop brand?
it would be worth buying one and sticking an apple logo on it.

Mike Ming's work is nice and it definitely makes the Dell look like a polished turd, but something about a bunch of other people rocking the same "unique" design as my laptop would really take the cool out of this. Not that the Dell doesn't already do this. Mod your own laptop with a truly custom design FTW.

For the love o' irony, I look forward to ordering a custom designed exterior, and painstakingly designing it to look exactly the same as the standard model.

Totally happy with my gelaskins cover. @ $30 bucks it cost me significantly less and lets someone else express themselves at my expense.

At least it's not a Mac. I think the design is okay; reminds me of some albums I have.

Or for $20 you can buy 3 sheets of removable sticker paper at Office Max and print up your own design.

the design isn't bad IMO, just not on a laptop. And BTW Dell, this doesn't make the inspiron the 'cool' thing to have. "lipstick on a pig" seems fitting.

BTW they should come up with Bloods and Crips graffiti designs. that would be awsome.

I've got a Dell and I don't have any problems with it. There's a lot crappier laptops out there I could have bought.
I've got a vinyl skin coming in from skinit.com with my own custom graphics I uploaded to their site.
