BlackBerry Bold (aka 9000) Will Sync to iTunes
Posted by Sean Fallon at 4:21 AM on May 15, 2008
According to CNET, RIM is planning to ship the newly announced BlackBerry Bold (aka 9000) with some newfangled music capability that the folks at Apple may not be all that pleased with. The program in question has been dubbed "Blackberry Media Sync"—and it will make it possible to transfer music to the phone via iTunes. There has been no official word yet, but my guess is that Steve's reaction will be to bypass diplomacy and stomp on RIM Godzilla style. [CNET]

@justinsane: According to the Nokia link:
Note: Music purchased from the Apple iTunes Music Store cannot be played on the Nokia N91.
I wonder how many people use iTunes that don't use an iPod as their primary music device. I would also guess that most of these people purchase a lot of their music from iTMS.
IMHO it seems like a waste of development time and money for anyone to provide the ability to sync with iTunes if they can't deal with iTMS DRM.

iTunes already supports third-party device synchronization, and has a plugin architecture to do so. It's not evangelized by Apple anymore, it's more a relic of pre-iPod days, but it exists and is official. A number of manufacturers use it, enabling their devices to synchronize with iTunes. Nokia is probably the most prominent example. Here's the iTunes plugin for the N91:

Anyone who is of the conception that Apple either didn't know about this or perhaps disapproves is, IMHO, naive.
Having another device that lets people buy stuff for itunes music store is a good thing. I don't believe that this will hurt iPhone sales as much as you might think. And really, most people buy iPods for music and phones for phoning, it seems to me. So I go back to sentence 1 above - this will be good for iTMS, and thus good for Apple.

@Enigmaaron1: I have more faith in Apple than that...
They will make a security update that will outright brick your Blackberry when you try and sync.

Hmmm. I suspect a secret deal between RIM and Apple has been formed to allow RIM devices to access iTunes and to allow the iPhone to have a new version of Blackberry Connect. Apple wins be extending the iTunes store and mega profits from affluent business Blackberry types and RIM wins by selling the often imitated but never duplicated Blackberry service on the iPhone (though their handsets will compete, hardware is not RIMs bread and butter). Guess we'll see in a few short months...

It would be senselessly cruel for Apple to stomp down on this. Aren't there already other MP3 players that sync with iTunes?

I doubt Apple cares too much about this. You'll never be able to copy anything with DRM to the Blackberry which leaves out all of the video store and any music you bought that you can't upgrade to the non-DRM "plus" version.

We can look forward to an iTunes "security update" that will make the Blackberry mysteriously unable to sync via iTunes then.

Hmm... interesting move.
If Apple stomps Godzilla-style they could run afoul of anti-trust due to the huge market share of iTMS. It's an interoperability issue. Let's see how this plays out...

I believe that other MP3 makers can sync to AACs purchased through iTunes. Like the Zen. You don't use iTunes to sync, you use the Zen media manager, but I think it works.

Wait. Blackberry 9000 or Blackberry Bold??? Or does it matter? Either way, this seals the deal for me over the iPhone. Give me a 16G microSD, iTunes synchability (sic), and NO APPLE HANDCUFFS and I'm a happy traveling Ad man.

apple wont allowed them to sync there protected media and mp3's. they never let anyone sync. why would they start now. its all bull, apple doesnt believe in that kind of growth. they want to make sure they force everyone to buy an ipod to play there media.

Dont be alarmed but my iPhone just got this weird transmission, it shut down for like 5 minutes, all buy its self. When it rebooted it beat up my bosses blackberry and threw it out the window.
I'm scared.

A NOTE PEOPLE SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO...
If you go back and look in the 9000's press release, it states it right there that it'll be syncable with iTunes with this software...

Sounds like good news for Apple as a company and Blackberry users.
Anyone know if you'll also be able to sync your podcasts to the blackberry as well?

Actually I just bought a Blackberry 8330 from sprint and it came with a program called Blackberry MediaSync by Roxio. I just told it where the music was (my music>itunes) and it transferred it all to my Blackberry. The fact is that most users keep tons of unprotected mp3 files in that directory and I doubt it's against any laws for programs to make use of it, as long as they don't specifically mention itunes.

I think Apple doesn't really care, because the DRM tracks will still be Itunes/ipod specific. I think this is more of a fix on Blackberry's part to get away from Roxio's Media Sync. The only other way to currently load music on a Blackberry is to drag and drop files. (Easiest way no matter what, but seemingly more involved for your less than tech savvy blackberry users)

I don't think apple sees Rim as the enemy, they just want a piece of the market. It's up to the customers to decided what they really want at the end of the day anyway

@Enigmaaron1: I would then like to see a BB "hotfix" pushed that would "repair" the iTunes sync issue. Let the covert update war begin.

People don't see it now, but Apple will be picked and pulled apart. Psystar and now what RIM is doing, is exactly this. It's only a matter of time until the movie and music industries do their own thing as well. Apple is a chair which doesn't own the legs.
Apple can quickly eliminate and destroy RIM if they just make two iphones: one without a keyboard and one with. Then pretty much Blackberry will have a real challenge. Apple is the master at GUI interfaces.

@AlanIn4D: I understand the real issue is the patents around getting real email BBerry style = push email- something the iPhone doesn't have yet - it would make sense to make the deal...

what the hell can apple do?
isnt it the same as running apple software on windows, or using a sony mp3 player to sync with WMP?
i do find this strange as i will never use this on my work BB, i would rather get an ipod. indexing 1000s of exchange items and 1000s of songs will most likely kill the processor and battery life. still glad for the option though - some people may find it useful.
i hope you folks know that any bes admin with 1/2 a brain wont allow those files to be backed up.
there is no 1 DEVICE alive today - still the need for two or more.

@keyser: the BBerry seems to be the closest to a 1 device/.
proper email - both ways - with full office attachment/ PDF readers.
video, audio capability - its always needed the convenience of iTunes though - from the start for the lazies like me.
GPS
phone and world phone
ability to really type (but you have to learn the Pearl)
The iPhone looks cooler, maybe the second version might catch up with the BBerry.
