BioShock Plus Accelerometer-Powered FPS Coming to iPhone
Posted by Jason Chen at 4:20 AM on May 30, 2008
We've already seen a demo of Quake 3 Arena running NETWORKED on two iPhones with accelerometers, but news is some more similar games are coming this way. First, there's Re-Volt, made by some Canadian developer, that'll have Quake-ish graphics and feature tilt and touch controls as well. Then, even better, there will be BioShock. Yes, that BioShock. The one with the fantastic mood and storytelling. Who knows how bastardised the iPhone version will be, but we want it. [Pocket Gamer (BioShock) and Pocket Gamer (Re-Volt)]

That does not look like fun at all. So, you tap the screen to shoot, and then it keeps shooting until you tap it again?
Developers had a hard enough time creating a working FPS control scheme for the PSP, how are they going to do it with basically no buttons?
The iPhone could be great for certain games (that Hexic-type one looked really sweet), but Bioshock is not one of them.

@Bueller: Exactly what I was thinking. If I'm gonna go through all that trouble to play a game they might as well make an extra controller attachment for me to carry around instead.

I guess I just don't get it. Tilting your gaming device all over the place and trying to watch the screen you're playing it on at the same time seems to me to be asking for a case of vertigo.

might want to move away from the light when you're filming it so we're not watching a video of reflections the whole time :P

I'm not falling for that again. I picked up Assassin's Creed for the DS an hour before a flight, since the real version is supposed to kick all forms of ass. I would have found the game way more enjoyable if I had shoved it up my ass, sideways, and still in the box (FYI, I'm not usually into stuff like that)

Oh WTF, I got all excited about seeing some RC Car action with Re-Volt and then it turns out to be not THE Re-Volt, but some other game masquerading as such.
I got robbed.

@bandit: Because if you deactivate the home button's function, you won't be able to exit the game.
OK, I understand that people really want to take advantage of this 4-axis accelerometer doohickey, but really, it's getting pretty silly. Some games just don't work with tilting. Touch fighter looks wicked, and being a space flight game, I can see the appeal, but for an FPS, or a racing sim, couldn't it just be better to have some lightweight virtual touch controls somewhere around the edges of the display?

Marble Madness is the obvious game here.
Why not use the iphone's single button as the gun trigger?

Dear iPhone game developers
Do not make complex games for the iPhone - they will suck.

@robotleawesome: Its just a good example of whats possible.
Just because you don't think they will be enjoyable* doesn't mean other people will.
enjoyable -adjective
giving or capable of giving joy or pleasure.
